WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY 💜 THEN AND NOW 2021

  • A Treat For All. Adapted from Roald Dahl’s novel, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory is arguably the greatest family film ever made. Starring the irreplaceable Gene Wilder as the titular Wonka, with terrific music throughout which garnered an Academy Award nomination, and uniquely strong performances from the children, for which sometimes Director Mel Stuart was a little too demanding of - we’ll get to that. This delicious 1971 masterpiece is wildly original. With a message to use your imagination and believe in yourself, it taught us all lessons as we watched spoiled child after child fail to make the honorable choice. This film gave us a lot, Golden Tickets, Oompa Loompas, the Everlasting Gobstopper, and of course introduced the world famous song “The Candy Man,” , which Sammy Davis Jr. would turn into a #1 Hit. Davis actually pushed to play the Candy Store owner too, but Stuart thought a huge star would break the reality of the film.

Gene Wilder made the original film work but it also had great songs and an excellent supporting cast. None of the kid actors were bad (good to excellent; the actress who played Veruca was the best actor of that group, IMHO) and Veruca was delightfully bad in a way that was entertaining instead of just witchy with a "B". Just something about the kid actors in the 1960s and 1970s made them a lot more palatable than how I feel about most kids in TV shows and movies from the mid-1980s onward.
The film itself is one of the few from my childhood where I can see a lot of things I missed (the adult humor that went over my head!), appreciate the art design on what was a low-budget film -- it was designed by the same man, Harper Goff, who designed the classic Nautilus submarine for Disney's version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea --, and not be ashamed of that film. It's not a stupid kid's film or one that talks down to you. I HATED films like that in my youth and I still can't stand films like that even today. The 1970s were kind of special for kid films that didn't treat the subjects OR target audience as "challenged" and respectfully adapted classic works instead of taking the easy way out. The screenplays seemed to be better than anything mainstream Hollywood is doing now. Hollywood (including and ESPECIALLY Disney) think we're all idiots now. It wasn't always that way.
They're doing yet another home video release of the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka soon. 4K Blu ray. I honestly don't know that the film will "improve" with four times the pixel resolution of the Blu ray but I probably will pick it up if the audio is enhanced. I still have my DVD and Blu ray editions. I also picked up the soundtrack over 20 years ago on CD and have never regretted that. It is MUCH better than the Johnny Depp film which had a mediocre soundtrack to go with its flawed, disturbingly weird take on the story.

I was amazingly lucky and honored to meet all five of the kids, 10 years ago in Chicago, at Wizard World ComiCon. It was the first time all five of them were together since shooting the movie.
All five of them were incredibly friendly and kind, but Julie Dawn Cole and Paris Themmen went above and beyond, engaging me in conversation...not just shaking hands, saying hello and signing an autograph. One of my best friends is beyond words obsessed with Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, so I got an 8X10 of the kids and Gene Wilder standing on the steps inside the Chocolate Room and had them sign it to her for her birthday and Christmas present and Julie and Paris were asking me questions about her and how long we've been friends and giving me kudos for getting her the picture since she couldn't be there herself.
Till the day I leave this blue marble, I'll always consider myself every kind of lucky that I got to actually meet all five of them, especially and sadly now that Denise Nickerson isn't with us anymore (I did get to tell her how much of a Dark Shadows fan I am. I use to watch it with my Mom when I was a kid.).

I love Gene Wilder and watched everything he was in. Blazing Saddles is another favorite. Wilder was such a caring and kind person. I remember his remarks on the new "Willy Wonka" with Depp and I couldn't agree more. That was horrid! There was only 1 Gene Wilder and I think people should stop trying to fill his shoes.
I still sit and watch this every chance I get. I was born in '75' Also The Wizard of Oz. My grown children '21' loved both and I'm sure my future grandchildren will too.

You really can't compare the two movies Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is an absolute classic it was beautifully made but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was well-made also but the two movies had two totally different storylines in my opinion Charlie and the Chocolate Factory actually followed along more with the book than Willy Wonka did I'm not saying one is better than the other they were both equally well made and very good movies

Gene Wilder is always going to be my favorite Willy Wonka, but I was impressed by Depp's version too and I was sooo glad that they used a different story and not just a cheap remake when Depp did play Willy Wonka! I thought I would hate the new version but I love them both for different reasons. Willy Wonka is my favorite character followed closely by Grandpa Joe.

The next time you watch the original 'Miracle on 34th Street', pay close attention to the scene in the post office. You'll see Jack Albertson in an uncredited role as the mail sorter who makes the fateful suggestion to send all the letters addressed to Santa to the courthouse.
