Helmut Lotti admitted that he sang the Russian Lyrics phoenetically ,since he doesn't know the language

Very nice, clear voice. I have to sing this in June, and since I am just learning now how to speak Russian, this is very helpful...it's such a beautiful tune.

Yes this is a Russian Jewish song composed by Boris Fomin about 1920. Eugene Raskin a Columbia professor and part time folks singer, said that as a small boy his mother would sing him this song, and years later he, as you note, gave it English lyrics and it became a hit for Mary Hopkin.

Sharing & enjoying traditional songs & culture and thus relating to our comman humanity is what President Kennedy had in mind when he said of the people of the (former) Soviet Union in 1963 "For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal."

The melody is Russian, but the song was not translated, an American Gene Raskin wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" this is not a translation from the Russian song "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" which means "By a long road" or "along a long road" The song in Russian Дорогой длинною, was written by Boris Fomin in the early 1900's with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii.
Mary Hopkin had the biggest and best known hit with this song.

    By the Long Road
You rode on a troika with sleigh bells,
And in the distance lights flickered..
If only I could follow you now
I would dispel the grief in my soul!
By the long road, in the moon light,
And with this song that flies off, ringing,
And with this ancient, this ancient seven-string,
That has so tormented me by night.

There are so many Slavic-language songs "ripped" from the other side of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War - this is one; another is "Lutshje Bulo" turned into "Yes, my Darling Daughter" with English lyrics written by Jack Lawrence and performed by many Western artists including the Andrew's Sisters, Glenn Miller and Sandie Shaw; and of course there is Acker Bilk's "Midnight in Moscow" which is actually the Russian folk song "Podmoskovnye Vechera" (evenings around Moscow).

We rode on a troika with bells,
A lights flashing in the distance ...
Ah, how i would like to follow you,
To deprive my soul from the boredom
    Chorus
By the long road,by the moon night
With the song, which flies away ringing
    With that ancient and seven-stringed
which at nights so tormented me
But it turns out we were singing for nothing,
    Needlessly burning night after night.
If we did away with everything old,
So these nights also moved away
    Chorus

Great song, but Raskin didn't really translate it , as that is generally impossible to do and have a rational song. What Raskin did was add English lyrics that he felt fit the tune. The original song was written by Boris Fomin about 1920 and was called, in English, By the Long Road.
Raskin was of Russian Jewish heritage, as was Fomin, and Gene said that as a boy his mother would sing this song to him. He liked it so much that years later when he became a college professor and part time folk singer, he came up with the lyrics we now know.

Here is the translation from the Russian.
But it turns out our song was futile,
In vain we burned night in and night out.
If we have finished with the old,
Then those nights have also left us!
Out into our native land, and by new paths,
We have been fated to go now!
...You rode on a troika with sleigh bells,
[But] you've long since passed by!
