  • Lets's play with GNOME Boxes!
    For Ubuntu 18.04:
    Installation Command:
    sudo apt install -yy gnome-boxes qemu-kvm libvirt-bin
    Add User to kvm:
    sudo usermod -a -G kvm $USER
Allow users in kvm group to start VMs:
    sudo sed -i -e 's/\#group\ =\ "root"/group=kvm/g' /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf
    For Ubuntu 19.10:
    Installation Command:
sudo apt install -yy gnome-boxes qemu-kvm
    Add User to kvm:
    sudo usermod -a -G kvm $USER
To get your Guest Additions-like drivers in GNOME Boxes, install the Spice Tools inside the VM
    sudo apt install spice-vdagent spice-webdavd

Just found your channel and ended up watching loads of your videos and I have to say you're awesome. You show how to do stuff in such a human simple manner so easy to understand. You're the best I have seen on UA-cam in years. You're so funny and you show really good solid examples of what needs to be understood, when to use it and most of all how to use it.
Thank you so much for your videos, I'm hooked to your channel. lol
Before I go I think you should write some Linux book's as you would break it down in to fun and the basics. Well you have totally blown me away with how good your videos are, keep it going buddy.

Since a given version of Spice Guest Agent (I forgot which one exactly) automatic resize only occurs in _Gnome_ guests. However you can adapt/resize the display manually with `xrandr --output Virtual-0 --auto'. Strangely enough automatic resize does occur when restoring your VM window (go figure). It doesn't when *going* full-screen, only when *leaving* . At least with Linux Mint Debian Edition 3.

I started to use Gnome Boxes after viewing your presentation and others. How about a follow-up presentation on how to activate USB's, etc. which I haven't been able to do yet. Also, with both Windows 7 and Windows 10, I have no VM audio. I'm sure it is something with my configuration.

I have a Thinkpad R61i with Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia installed. The CPU has no hardware virtualization.
I installed Boxes and attempted to install Damn Small Linux in a virtual machine. The live iso image booted, but I didn't get keyboards integration. Therefore I could not complete the install.
Does Boxes require hardware virtualization to function?
Boxes gave me an error message to the effect that the acceleration tab on system had the virtualization property enabled. This was invalid since my CPU does not support this feature. However after I disabled this property the save button remained grayed and could not save the change. Restating the virtual machine didn't work either.
I tried same on VirtualBox but VB requires hardware virtualization...

  • @BrucesWorldofStuff

Nice Video. I may have to give it a try. One question?
So when you are using XBT or BU or Timeshift , you will now be backing up the 20gig VM's times however many you have now.
Since Boxs stores it VM's in the ~/.local / **/** then every time XBT or BU or Timeshift is ran that is back-up too.
This to be a issue for me, as I for one keep my VM's on a separate drive (which I unmount when backing-up) and I don't see any reason to back them up the VM/s as I use them for testing... I do have 3 VM's that are stored on the server and when I need to use them I copy them over and use them from my local that way they are not touched.
I am not having the issues your having with VB I am still using v5 something. I know that 6 is out but that is work...Lol
Thanks Joe for the video! I will give it a looksee...

I'm trying to get an old version of Pycam to run on an old version of Ubuntu (10.04).. cuz, developers ruined Pycam.. It used to work great, but, after an upgrade, nobody can get it to run...
It is (was) the only CAM software available for Linux CNC, except for expensive ones, an now it's useless..

Same here. It is very frustrating. Guy Clark, here in the comments, said that it's a bug with Boxes on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS which can cause virtual machines to fail to start, and Linux Mint 19.2 (which I'm also using) is based on Ubuntu 18.4 LTS. It may work with Linux Mint 20 next year. Hopefully.

When you say, “Greetings and salutations” at the beginning of each video, are you referencing the movie Heathers? I just saw it for the first time last night. Actually, as I type this, I remember you saying in an earlier video that you were paying homage to another DJ who had been your mentor, or a DJ you had worked with before. At any rate, I’m sure you already know this, but Christian Slater says greetings and salutations in Heathers.

What's your take on Bedrock Linux as an alternative to Snap and Flatpak? With Bedrock Linux script installed on Ubuntu or Mint, you can for example install software packages from Arch repos or AUR using pacman and yay commands on Mint or Ubuntu terminal. Bedrock Linux basically gives access to repositories of other Linux distros Debian, Arch, Fedora, etc. which you normally wont have.

I tried boxes some time ago but could never get anything to install. Back then I was using Xubuntu and different hardware. Your video has motivated me to give it another try but I am experiencing the same problems as I did a couple of years or so ago, only now I am using Ubuntu Mate 18.04. There were no error messages during the install of Gnome-boxes following your method in the video. Every ISO I have tried to install (all known good ISOs that work fine in VirtualBox) have the same error, "Failed to start ". Have I missed something? I am currently downloading an OS via the boxes interface to see if that works. Any one else had this problem?
