If they're going to start going after tyre noise, they'll have to start looking at the rubbish road surfaces we have to put up with in this country (UK). There are stretches of motorway where my RSQ3 on 21"s is as quiet as a mouse, then the surface changes, and you struggle to hear the radio!
Yes indeed. There is a 10 mile concrete SW section of the M25 that has been there forever. (Leatherhead-Reigate pretty much) Very hard wearing it may be, but it is ridiculously noisy. I look forward to when they resurface all that.. ;)
I had a my own tyre business for many years. Some of the tyre noise ratings were really questionable. The Continental Tyres and the Michelin Pilot Sport Tyres were alarmingly noisy. Both claimed low noise ratings but you have to realise that these noise ratings are Tyre Company claims. When you next change your tyres don't go to one of the big chains. Find a good local independent and ask for advice and then buy tyres from them. You will not regret my advice or theirs

I hear you! I drove a new car 1500 miles home, through several states. I was starting to worry a little with the noise but as soon as I hit my own state line, smooth sailing... then I knew the roads really suck. They should do better with our tax dollars or people need to start electing those who will.
Yes but the tire matters more to outsiders. To the people inside the car the road matters more. But to people on the side the car produces sounds based on various factors. When lifted 4x4 trucks pass me with giant mud tires it makes incredibly loud noise. Falken and Toyo make some quiet tires I have been pleased with.
Absolutely spot on. Tyre noise also depends a lot on the car. But it's not that big a deal for most people. If they're concerned about other noise such as engine noise, why not do something about the sound of trucks and buses? Ok, it's only once a fortnight but the dustbin wagons come round at 7 a.m. with the engine revving up to operate the hydraulic bin gear at the back, and they sound far worse than anything else on the roads. Incidentally I don't see councils and government departments clamouring to convert their fleets to electric vehicles, if it's that big a deal you have to wonder why. All the council's latest vehicles are diesel.
I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with how "loud" the car is at all, as we know the GTR isn't (from factory) a very loud car. I'd say this has more to do with CO2 levels and the cost of fines for exceeding these. The GTR is likely to raise Nissan's overall CO2 average up significantly, and seeing that it has been on the market for a long time now and a relatively low volume production car means it has to go. Ironically, as I type this, a cyclist has just ridden past my house on a quiet road with his portable music speaker blaring...
I’m firmly convinced that the “fun” factor in cars has gone down over the years in large part because of regulation. Noise levels, fuel economy, safety, etc. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing environmentally speaking, but it does mean we are seeing the end of an era, and that’s sad.
Doesn’t mean we have to accept it. I’m all for environmental friendly. But turning all the Lambo and Ferraris etc full EV won’t do shit for the pollution compared to the average commuting cars.
The fun factor is gone because manufacturers are mainly focused on overcomplicating and over engeering everything at the expense of a good driver experience

I was so disappointed when I realised that electric cars aren't much quieter then ICEs. I thought the lives of people who live next to busy roads were going to be transformed. But sadly not.
Weirdly enough, electric cars are louder than ICE cars. Most 4 cylinders are quieter than the tires on the cars themselves. Electric cars, on the other hand, have those fake Jetsons noise boxes and whines and hums that can basically travel through the walls and have such a weird frequency that I can always hear them buzzing by my building all night long. The Renault Zoe is incredibly loud!
A lot of eV specific oem tyres are engineered to be quieter to compliment the lack of drivetrain noise. Tyre noise is a lot more noticeable when driving electrics.

The love we all share for cars started from our favorite sports car we SAW AND HEARD for the first time. Who remembers naming the car before ever seeing it based on the cars exhaust note as it came down your street. i guess that’s soon to be a thing of the past.
This is why valved exhausts exist. They will do some trickery where the cars are near silent in "normal mode" but absolutely obnoxious if you enter "track only mode"
Well, you know we have to get on that lithium which is harvested in sweatshop nations, shipped on super tankers, assembled into batteries primarily in Asia, then shipped back to the U.S. or Europe so people can think they are actually making a difference, virtue signal a little.
The sound of a car is one of the most exciting things about driving a high performance car! I've just fitted an Armytrix exhaust system to my car, so safe to say I'm not complying with those noise regulations 😂
It's only part of the excitement if it's a good noise though! I've kept mine standard on my V10 as the sound is great, I wouldn't want it louder. The worst thing is the trend for fake banging and crackling on the overrun.
Ahum, 99.9% of the cars passing by are not high performance cars, and it is true, the tires make the most noise and is not a pleasant noise. And that makes car focussed cities so damn noisy. I am all for reducing that noise.

The biggest problem with all new cars is the lack of sound. In the UK lots of kids were taught to atop look and listen , but with the new rules a lot of people may be run over because they don't here the vehicle coming and this is unsafe and dangerous so the UK government needs to take a look at what they are doing to the motor vehicle industry .
i find it weird that EVs are required to make noise at low speeds but other cars are not - all cars can be nearly silent, if we think they need to add noise to evs then just make it a rule for all new vehicles.

A solution to tire noise is rubberized asphalt (ground up old tires mixed into the asphalt used to pave a new road). They've been doing this for decades in Phoenix AZ. Subjectively it reduces tire noise by 50% inside and outside the car.
One thing I'm confused on - you say they won't be much louder than you talking - but how does that work with pedestrian safety? Electric cars are obviously quiet and generally need to be emitting an extra sound through speakers for safety at low speeds so people can hear them coming - are those two things not going against each other? I WANT to be able to hear a car driving near me. ICE or electric, doesn't matter - being able to hear something moving near, for me, is extremely important.
I don't understand this argument, don't people look left and right before crossing? There are many other road users who are just as quiet. Do they cause accidents?

People will pull out of anywhere (spaces, drop off points, or just going down the carpark aisles) without looking around them. Honestly, go to your local supermarket and stand near the entrance for about 5 minutes and you'll get where I'm coming from pretty quickly.
Electric cars are generally mandated to have a speaker playing a sound while at low speeds. It is primarily intended to make the car audible at all times; after a certain point the tire noise makes the additional noise unnecessary. These noises are generally designed to be noticeable, but not loud.
The best Japanese sport car: GTR, is sadly following the way of the incredible performer Viper ACR. In USA they also announced the dismissal of the Camaro and Helcat musclecars after 2023. So sad.
True about tyre noise, I listened to EV’s on the road 10 years ago and you can hear tyre noise above 20mph as a pedestrian nearby, I wanted to see how quiet they would be so listened to several and all had noticeable tyre noise once rolling. Shame about the gtr
Saying that most tires generate around 70 decibels and regulations state 68 at max that mean even electric cars will struggle to pass noise tests. It is insane for me.
There is a new crash test regulation aswell that likely it wouldn't have passed.. Let's face it, it lasted in producton way more than it should, from 2007 to 2022, that was a heck of a run
More or less, i love Ferrari sounds , but i hate when ever a loud bike passes by my car when my daughter is asleep in the car. These rules should only apply to areas without houses , but in the example i gave , people in my country make their bikes louder because they want to be eared. For example when i drive around town most elderly don't ear me ( eletric ) so the only way to keep all happy is to have flying cars xD

Now, they are like heavy, quiet, and very expensive vacuum cleaners designed as mobile living or office rooms connected with the Internet loaded with many screens and USB ports driving on heavily congested roads. I recently went for a holiday to the UAE. I stayed at the Swissotel right across the Dubai Mall and my window was facing the hiway. Uptil 3 am all I could hear was loud screaming engines. But never did I have a problem either with the tyre noise or the exhaust noise when trying to fall asleep. In fact I would fall asleep with a grin on my face every time I heard a mellifluous engine screaming down the hiway until I was fully asleep. What I'm saying is people can get used to it, or rather there should be silent zones or roads where there is a sound limit and a microphone to catch said person. And have decibel ratings for roads like speed limits are mentioned. That way those of us who have loud cars and want to enjoy the effort we put into affording that car, can do so in specific areas.

I love the noise of a proper performance car but then again I can hear some cars clear across town which is annoying as hell when some idiot is red lining his second had porsche at 11pm on a Sunday night. Not to mention chappy Honda civics with after market sports exhausts or those god awful bobber motorbikes that sound like spanners in a washing machine....
Generally speaking there's a correlation between noise and grip. I do hope we don't end up with poorer braking distances to meet noise regulations. Nobody ever dies because of noise pollution. Probably.
it can cause stress that also helps in causing heart issues but tbh the roads are already less noisy. It's just the people that modify their car/motorcycles that do make noise and rich people with loud stock hypercars.
I think these noise regulations are good, but I don't see why there can't be some exceptions for sports cars. They are rare, so their contribution to the noise levels in our cities is negligible. I live in a relatively small city in Italy, and I hear the hospital helicopters far more often than I hear sports cars. And even in cities like Monaco, where all tax dodgers have super cars, the solid speed limits make sure you don't get some excessive revving on the streets. But the thing is, our politicians approach the traffic situations in the wrong way, as usual - to regulate the car traffic, you make the public transport, bicycles and pedestrian traffic more attractive. There are multiple examples of this working well from all around the world, and basically no example of the opposite approach achieving anything.
If you make an exception for « sports cars » everyone will call their cars « sport cars ». There’s no formal definition. Toyota can call its Prius a sports car and we’ll be none the wiser. And while I enjoy sport car noises I abhor loud Harley Davidsons ; they’ll ask why sports cars are ok and they cannot get a waiver too. Pretty soon, everyone gets a pass and you’re back where you started
I was walking the dog before watching this video and two mountain bikes with fat tyres zipped past followed by a small hatchback. The cycles had a louder tyre noise than the car! I'm not sure where we go to be honest. If the max noise level in 2026 is going to be 68dB but most tyres produce more noise than that now, surely tyre manufacturers are going to up their game a lot. Road noise levels are also very dependent on the quality of the roads, which we know are pretty awful in the UK. RIP the motorist?
Where I live, the majority of vehicles on the road are 4WD. The tyre noise from some of those is crazy loud. Others are just loud. However both are quieter than my motorbike. I wonder what the solution is to keep motorcycles safe while making the bikes quieter - often the noise is the only way drivers know I am around - it's easy to be in their blind spots.
This is beyond sad. I’m just feel lucky doing a few wonderful and very loud cars. And God bless Lamborghini! I am very lucky to own an STO and this thing is very loud in the Trofeo mode even at start up. I guess aftermarket exhaust manufactures have their work cut out for them for the next 10 or so years. One thing I wonder... since these are noise tests, and we have made great strides at noise cancelling headphones that just generate "noise" cancelling waves in smaller appliances, couldn't they just add extra external speakers to not drum out but equalise out the noise in regular driving modes, with the caveat that all the noise is not touched once the car is in a track-only mode? Sure, the electric installation and car body engineers would have to work their magic in order to a) build and strategically place such noise cancellers within car's structure, b) tune the setiings to actively dampen respective harmonics or sound levels before they "leave" the car's body... I guess maybe Yamaha experts could generate such a prototype for future LFA, to offer both the great noise when wanted and silence when needed ;)
All I can say is that one of my favorite movie opening scenes is the Lamborghini Countach outrunning the police in the beginning of The Cannonball Run, That should say everything about my feeling on car sounds.

@@richboy900 power-to-weight ratio, chassis stiffness, suspension geometry, aero performance, before you get into crazy things like advanced driver assist features - like steer-by-wire optimization, active aero and cold gas thrusters. you'll still be able to dump lots of money chasing marginal gains with electric sports cars, and end up with some of them costing millions.
At that point when they won't make any noise I want the speakers in the car to make the sound that the car would have made with quality audio. I mean it's not ideal but it's a loophole, at least when you're inside the car you can retain that sound effect of hearing the power

noise regulations suck. because of them you can now only get the mustang gt in automatic because the manual is 1 db louder, which is 1 db too high. atleast its like that in germany
These rules are killing off the excitement and drama you get when driving a sports car. It’s not all about the straight line speed. Just look at the mess the BMW i4 m50 is, great in a straight line but hit a nice twisty B road and it falls apart with its 2.200kg curb weight which is 500kg higher that the ICE M4. You should watch Harry’s Garage review on it. Also Emissions Analytics a UK based independent emissions testing firm have suggested that an EV’s extra weight causes excess tire wear thus causing far more particulates in the atmosphere. These particulates are a 1000 times worse for your health than tailpipe emissions. Leading to higher instances of cancer. Look, fossil fuelled cars is not the future but nor are EV’s if we truly care about our environment then we need to get serious and find a true alternative to Petrol.
@@billtribble2904 people always say it's inefficient, expensive and still emits like NOX (I think idk I can't remember what gas it emits) but, what people fail to realize is that the main point of using hydrogen as an alternative is despite it's downsides, it's still better then both petrol and ev, environmentwise. We're all aiming for carbon-NUETRALITY, right? It's just there are people in power who are afraid to make sacrifices or are just greedy... ...all because of money. or just dumb to understand what carbon neutral means.
In Japan, the GTR can be set to limit top speed based on locations, like release full top speed on track only. I believe manufacturers can also limit engine noise based on GPS data, like build up areas or even local time. Everything is just a bit of software.
I had high hopes that hydrogen-powered ICE cars would be the next big thing so that we could continue to enjoy internal combustion; what I did not know is that noise regulations are becoming this strict. Regardless of how well hydrogen cars perform emissions wise, etc, they wont be sold because of noise.
So how does these strict EU regulations affect sport bikes. Just imagine you're sitting in your now muted Lambo and some guy rolls by on his BMW s1000rr with acropovic exhaust blowing your eardrums out.

Usually those aftermarket exhausts or decats are illegal, just unenforced. Plenty of pipes sold "for track use only" end up on bikes on the street. It's usually not even hard to swap back on the stock pipe when the annual inspection rolls around.
they already affect bikes a lot. the Tyrol region of Austria has a complete ban on all motorcycles where the decible is higher than 95DB (the average from the showfloor sportsbike already goes over those limits)
Are they going after motorcycles and trucks/lorries too? I live on a big-ish road, the stuff on my desk is often literally vibrating/rattling when one of these comes past... Cars are never anywhere near as loud and have a much more enjoyable sound anyway...
From 82 to 72 decibels in 2016??? For those who may not be aware of this, a decibel is a logarithmic scale unit. This mean that it scales with the power of 10. So if you went from 82 to 81 that is 10 times quieter. 82 to 72 !!!! I am surprised that such a feat was even possible. Also I wonder how Amazing the streets sounded in the 70s!
The decibel scale doesn't work quite like that. A level of 80 decibels is 10 times louder than 70 decibels, not 100 times more. But I agree, reducing the level by a factor of tens (82 to 72) is still a big reduction.
A decrease of 10db is psycho-acoustically roughly a halfening of the perceived loudness of a sound. 82 to 72 means half as loud, not 100 times less or even 10 times less. You're both absolutely wrong. Where do you get these ideas from? 1db is literally defined as the smallest difference that a person can perceive; and that's typically a young person with great hearing, old people might need a difference of -2db to even notice it. -3db is a small but easily noticeable difference, -5db is a pretty small difference and so on. Beyond a certain point it's more about the language one chooses to describe things. +1db is technically a 7% loudness increase and a 26% increase in acoustic power. If you want power levels (energy) and by that we're talking watts going into speakers 10W to 20W is roughly +3db, 10W to 100W is roughly +10db and so on.

Ok, well that explains all the soft limiters on new performance vechiles as well as pumping fake noise into cabins. Although here's a better idea for manufacturers if they are listing. Pump out noise cancelling frequency outside the vechile that are specifically directed towards testing conditions. Also vechiles could then also have a "track mode" that has no restrictions because of course noise restrictions only apply on the road not on private or corporate owned racetracks.

@@pb6198 that's the point it won't work except for a small targeted area which the technology does exist for it. Sonic waves with opposing cancelling frequencies to the car exhaust can be targeted 3 meters directly behind the vechile where the tester measures the DB the exhaust is producing. As for a moving vechile test, yes I admit that you won't be able to do that one atm. However that is more to do with tyre and wind drag noise not exhaust which is not as relevant as the point is to bring back exhaust sounds in sports vechiles.

With the success of the new Nissan Z, their ideas about where they were going with the next generation of GT-R have changed abruptly. The people have spoken, they want manual transmissions, and classic design. The GTR is not known for either. The next GT-R was initially planned to stay only combustion, and have an upgraded version of its current body design. However the success of the new Nissan Z has shown Nissan that the public wants the next GTR to have body lines, and throwback details that hail back to its most popular predecessors, and that the public wants their stick shifts back! This means that the new GT-R will have more features reminiscent of the R34, and will have a 6-speed manual stick shift transmission, and hybridized power plant. These were not the directions they had intended on going before the release of the new Nissan Z, so changes have to be last minute and that means ending production of the current GTR model, in order to free up resources to allocate towards the redesign of the GT-R. That's the real reason why Nissan halted production of the current generation of GTR.
My thoughts are in the modern era cars need to have a fair amount of noise I’m not saying they need to be loud AF muscle cars or anything of that sort but with so many people having headphones and Bluetooth and all that while they’re walking down the street it’s nice to be able to hear if you had a call coming that way you can look up and pay attention
Wow. It's hard to believe you put up with THAT level of regulation where just the tire noise can get the car banned. Cars are a bit noisy, get over yourselves. If we still used horses, they make WAY more than 68 decibels. And how bucolic are they? Every car is just going to have a button for quiet and loud or your cars are going to be terrible and under 100 HP, because... how, other than an underpowered engine, are you going to have a 4000 hunk of metal and rubber going 65 mph quieter than a fan? It's silly!
This helpful, so they can build more houses closer to the roads with no noise barriers etc I guess. Anyone who knows the A5 development on the way to Tamworth from Nuneaton way, there's new build there on a very very busy A5 spitting distance from the road.
I find it weird that I used to complain about all the cool cars us here in the US didn’t get compared to the UK, and now the complete opposite is occurring. WE’RE getting the cool cars while the UK isn’t. Meanwhile, the US isn’t as great in terms of available racetracks compared to what’s on offer across the pond
I understand the point in turning down the noise of cars. But I think sportscars are the only type of cars in the future that got a justification to still run with petrol - because it makes a difference in these cars. 95% of the people actuallly don't care about the powertrain of their car, they just think they do. They claim that they want to have sound - while driving a 2l Volkswagen Passat. They speak about the weight of electric cars, while sitting in their BMW X5. Most of the people want to have torque, reach, availability, low costs and comfort. They'll be pretty fine with an electric car. Those 5% of real Petrolheads out there drive today allready a car which celebrates the petrol engine. A proper hothach, power coupe, roadster or a full grown sportscar. They like to have petrol engines for a reason and the sound is one of them. So what's my point? In the future, I see 95% of the customer in rich countries driving electric cars - and they'll be totally fine with it. Their cars even need to be louder at lower speeds for pedestrian safety reasons ^^ The other 5% - who has propably watched that great video a minute ago - should get the possibility to enjoy the sound of their petrol car in places where nobody is disturbed. Today the Exhaust-Sound can be modified and turned down pretty good by exhaust-flaps or mapping. Sure its not the best option for the engine, but it works. But who guarantee that the driver will stick to the future law and silences the engine for e. g. in the town? Nobody but the driver himself. As nobody controls the speed, the route or any other behavior of the car that can cause a conflict with laws. Its like always when people aren't convinced by the purpose of a law and don't accept it: The probability to get caught multiplied with the severity of the fine will determine whether people stick to the law or not. As simple as that. So let the Petrol-sportscars of the future have a loud and a quiet side. And make sure the drivers respect other people's justified interest not to get blasted by the surely great, but to them momentarily annoying sound. I don't believe it will go that way, to much effort in terms of laws and so on. But anyway, that would be my favorite. And by the way, there will be great electric sportscars aswell, am about to call myself a petrol - and a electricity-head 😄
How does it make sense to turn down the noise of cars? It's the most irrational thing I've ever heard... Most people walk around with silly airpods in anyway immersed in the sound of some 💩 music so why would they be concerned about the noise of cars.

rubbish. there are a lot of real petrolheads that drive something mundane because it fits their needs and budget. can you name a 'hot hatch' for example, with space for 5 adults in comfort, around 540 litres of boot space, can tow AND return over 50mpg while doing so, whilst being in the 'affordable' end of the budget, like available for £3-4k? give me a decent budget, id keep the family hack but have a V8 Mustang or an Aston Martin (with manual transmission of course) to fill my 'petrolhead' needs. but i havent the budget for a second car, and neither car suits my needs/budget for a daily. but by your theory im 'not a petrolhead'. utter nonsense. unlike most so called petrolheads, i actually DO have some idea what goes on with a car, unlike most petrolheads who just watch a few youtube videos, drive a few cars, repeat a few phrases they heard mechanics etc tell them about their cars, and they THINK they know their stuff.

Okay, so this is coming from an EV fan... This is some bullshit. Limits on tailpipe emissions - great, we all benefit from those. Limits on noise? Clearly we need *some* , but the main problem today is with people modifying their Fiesta to sound like a herd of elephants farting through a megaphone. They wouldn't pass the noise regs for a new vehicle. My understanding is that the MOT pass for noise is entirely discretionary on the part of the garage, so these cars don't really have a formal limit on them. *That* is where the new legislation needs to be. And the same goes for motorbikes, which are even more of a problem - literally nobody except the rider likes the sound of a bike. But sports cars? Many people *do* like the sound of them, so long as they're not used antisocially, which should be a local police issue rather than a manufacturer one. There's a lot of culture wrapped around it. The current limits on new car noise are absolutely fine and do not need pushing any further. And this is coming from an advocate for EVs. I want the vast majority of cars on the road to be electric, we'll all benefit from the improved air quality, reduced greenhouse effect, lower long-term costs and lack of reliance on imported oil... But there's very little harm in having sports cars, which comprise a tiny fraction of the market, keeping the emotional triggers that people buy them for. (All that being said, I want an electric GT-R. The engine has never been that car's selling point, and we don't currently have any EVs designed with a focus on handling.)
F your ev, you can't make something that handles like a gtr with batteries, and how was the engine not the point of the car? It always had great performance for the soze and being able to tune it very easy to do more, there is NOTHING fun about a electric gtr, what made the r35 stay that long, what made people buy it is the mecanical experience it has, it's not a manual but nissan made the gearbox make sounds in the cabin on purpose so you can feel the gears grinding to push the car. You don't get that with a pathetic poopoo car.
The GTR’s engine was so advanced for its time, it can still hold its own today and it is so tuneable. So as in a lot of performance cars, the GTR’s engine plays a part in defining the vehicle. However, I like the point you made about antisocial behaviour. I strongly believe some of the noise regulations, is the result of modified rackets being driven hard where they aren’t supposed to be driven hard. It is definitely not the defining factor, but we are not doing ourselves ANY favours by doing what we see a lot of people do in inappropriate surroundings.

The problem is with many manufacturers fitting giant batteries that make the cars heavy, but the GT-R itself is not a light car: it's about the same as a Tesla Model 3. From day 1, the big thing that people have always criticised the GT-R for is that it doesn't have the sound or soul of competitors from Porsche or Jaguar, or the supercars it initially humbled. It's a prime candidate for going electric.

That is what they should consider : What about batterie efficiency and degradation? What about batteries gas emissions? What about the cost of replacement of a battery every 2 or 3 years ? there are some 2013 teslas with around a million miles on them already... clearly, the longevity is there. also, once the battery really does degrade so much that it's useless, it's very easy to recycle it back into raw materials. it's also only a matter of time until economies of scale ramp up, and EVs become cheaper than ICE cars. hybrid turbine cars (burning diesel) would have given EVs a really good run for their money - you'd be able to get around 70% brake thermal efficiency out of a turbine with a hybrid system.... but the auto industry really wanted to keep selling everyone 1930s technology, and now they're having their lunch eaten
If they're going to start going after tyre noise, they'll have to start looking at the rubbish road surfaces we have to put up with in this country (UK). There are stretches of motorway where my RSQ3 on 21"s is as quiet as a mouse, then the surface changes, and you struggle to hear the radio!
Yes indeed. There is a 10 mile concrete SW section of the M25 that has been there forever. (Leatherhead-Reigate pretty much)

I had a my own tyre business for many years. Some of the tyre noise ratings were really questionable.
The Continental Tyres and the Michelin Pilot Sport Tyres were alarmingly noisy.
Both claimed low noise ratings but you have to realise that these noise ratings are Tyre Company claims.
When you next change your tyres don't go to one of the big chains.
Find a good local independent and ask for advice and then buy tyres from them.
You will not regret my advice or theirs

I hear you! I drove a new car 1500 miles home, through several states. I was starting to worry a little with the noise but as soon as I hit my own state line, smooth sailing... then I knew the roads really suck. They should do better with our tax dollars or people need to start electing those who will.
Yes but the tire matters more to outsiders. To the people inside the car the road matters more. But to people on the side the car produces sounds based on various factors. When lifted 4x4 trucks pass me with giant mud tires it makes incredibly loud noise. Falken and Toyo make some quiet tires I have been pleased with.

Tyre noise also depends a lot on the car. But it's not that big a deal for most people. If they're concerned about other noise such as engine noise, why not do something about the sound of trucks and buses? Ok, it's only once a fortnight but the dustbin wagons come round at 7 a.m. with the engine revving up to operate the hydraulic bin gear at the back, and they sound far worse than anything else on the roads.
Incidentally I don't see councils and government departments clamouring to convert their fleets to electric vehicles, if it's that big a deal you have to wonder why. All the council's latest vehicles are diesel.
I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with how "loud" the car is at all, as we know the GTR isn't (from factory) a very loud car. I'd say this has more to do with CO2 levels and the cost of fines for exceeding these. The GTR is likely to raise Nissan's overall CO2 average up significantly, and seeing that it has been on the market for a long time now and a relatively low volume production car means it has to go.
Ironically, as I type this, a cyclist has just ridden past my house on a quiet road with his portable music speaker blaring...

I’m firmly convinced that the “fun” factor in cars has gone down over the years in large part because of regulation. Noise levels, fuel economy, safety, etc. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing environmentally speaking, but it does mean we are seeing the end of an era, and that’s sad.
Doesn’t mean we have to accept it. I’m all for environmental friendly. But turning all the Lambo and Ferraris etc full EV won’t do shit for the pollution compared to the average commuting cars.
The fun factor is gone because manufacturers are mainly focused on overcomplicating and over engeering everything at the expense of a good driver experience

I was so disappointed when I realised that electric cars aren't much quieter then ICEs. I thought the lives of people who live next to busy roads were going to be transformed. But sadly not.
Weirdly enough, electric cars are louder than ICE cars. Most 4 cylinders are quieter than the tires on the cars themselves. Electric cars, on the other hand, have those fake Jetsons noise boxes and whines and hums that can basically travel through the walls and have such a weird frequency that I can always hear them buzzing by my building all night long. The Renault Zoe is incredibly loud!
A lot of eV specific oem tyres are engineered to be quieter to compliment the lack of drivetrain noise. Tyre noise is a lot more noticeable when driving electrics.

The love we all share for cars started from our favorite sports car we SAW AND HEARD for the first time. Who remembers naming the car before ever seeing it based on the cars exhaust note as it came down your street. i guess that’s soon to be a thing of the past.

They will do some trickery where the cars are near silent in "normal mode" but absolutely obnoxious if you enter "track only mode"

The sound of a car is one of the most exciting things about driving a high performance car! I've just fitted an Armytrix exhaust system to my car, so safe to say I'm not complying with those noise regulations 😂
It's only part of the excitement if it's a good noise though! I've kept mine standard on my V10 as the sound is great, I wouldn't want it louder. The worst thing is the trend for fake banging and crackling on the overrun.
Ahum, 99.9% of the cars passing by are not high performance cars, and it is true, the tires make the most noise and is not a pleasant noise. And that makes car focussed cities so damn noisy. I am all for reducing that noise.

The biggest problem with all new cars is the lack of sound. In the UK lots of kids were taught to atop look and listen , but with the new rules a lot of people may be run over because they don't here the vehicle coming and this is unsafe and dangerous so the UK government needs to take a look at what they are doing to the motor vehicle industry .

A solution to tire noise is rubberized asphalt (ground up old tires mixed into the asphalt used to pave a new road). They've been doing this for decades in Phoenix AZ. Subjectively it reduces tire noise by 50% inside and outside the car.

One thing I'm confused on - you say they won't be much louder than you talking - but how does that work with pedestrian safety? Electric cars are obviously quiet and generally need to be emitting an extra sound through speakers for safety at low speeds so people can hear them coming - are those two things not going against each other? I WANT to be able to hear a car driving near me. ICE or electric, doesn't matter - being able to hear something moving near, for me, is extremely important.
I don't understand this argument, don't people look left and right before crossing? There are many other road users who are just as quiet. Do they cause accidents?

People will pull out of anywhere (spaces, drop off points, or just going down the carpark aisles) without looking around them. Electric cars are generally mandated to have a speaker playing a sound while at low speeds. It is primarily intended to make the car audible at all times; after a certain point the tire noise makes the additional noise unnecessary. These noises are generally designed to be noticeable, but not loud.

True about tyre noise, I listened to EV’s on the road 10 years ago and you can hear tyre noise above 20mph as a pedestrian nearby, I wanted to see how quiet they would be so listened to several and all had noticeable tyre noise once rolling. Shame about the gtr
Saying that most tires generate around 70 decibels and regulations state 68 at max that mean even electric cars will struggle to pass noise tests. It is insane for me.

These rules should only apply to areas without houses , but in the example i gave , people in my country make their bikes louder because they want to be eared.

I used to love cars when they were affordable, designed with character and style, powered by loud, big engines, having many cylinders and petrol-fueled built to drive on many available roads fast safely.
Now, they are like heavy, quiet, and very expensive vacuum cleaners designed as mobile living or office rooms connected with the Internet loaded with many screens and USB ports driving on heavily congested roads. What's the fun about this?
I have to say road surface noise is a buggy for me... I've driven some flat roads thinking there is something wrong with my car only or 10miles down the road to actually hear again... But I do understand this is for the person walking the street with there dog etc.. but while driving at normal speeds I feel most cars ain't to bad, and when you do hear an engine or exhaust note my ears perk up.. I'm going to miss that when it's all gone...

I recently went for a holiday to the UAE. I stayed at the Swissotel right across the Dubai Mall and my window was facing the hiway. Uptil 3 am all I could hear was loud screaming engines. But never did I have a problem either with the tyre noise or the exhaust noise when trying to fall asleep. In fact I would fall asleep with a grin on my face every time I heard a mellifluous engine screaming down the hiway until I was fully asleep. What I'm saying is people can get used to it, or rather there should be silent zones or roads where there is a sound limit and a microphone to catch said person. And have decibel ratings for roads like speed limits are mentioned. That way those of us who have loud cars and want to enjoy the effort we put into affording that car, can do so in specific areas.

I love the noise of a proper performance car but then again I can hear some cars clear across town which is annoying as hell when some idiot is red lining his second had porsche at 11pm on a Sunday night. I think these noise regulations are good, but I don't see why there can't be some exceptions for sports cars. They are rare, so their contribution to the noise levels in our cities is negligible. I live in a relatively small city in Italy, and I hear the hospital helicopters far more often than I hear sports cars. And even in cities like Monaco, where all tax dodgers have super cars, the solid speed limits make sure you don't get some excessive revving on the streets.
But the thing is, our politicians approach the traffic situations in the wrong way, as usual - to regulate the car traffic, you make the public transport, bicycles and pedestrian traffic more attractive. There are multiple examples of this working well from all around the world, and basically no example of the opposite approach achieving anything.

If you make an exception for « sports cars » everyone will call their cars « sport cars ». There’s no formal definition. Toyota can call its Prius a sports car and we’ll be none the wiser.
And while I enjoy sport car noises I abhor loud Harley Davidsons ; they’ll ask why sports cars are ok and they cannot get a waiver too. Pretty soon, everyone gets a pass and you’re back where you started

You can cheat in my country. Put a normal exhaust on a motorcycle for example. Pass the yearly MOT, and the second you exit put the aftermarket one.

I was walking the dog before watching this video and two mountain bikes with fat tyres zipped past followed by a small hatchback. The cycles had a louder tyre noise than the car! I'm not sure where we go to be honest. If the max noise level in 2026 is going to be 68dB but most tyres produce more noise than that now, surely tyre manufacturers are going to up their game a lot. Road noise levels are also very dependent on the quality of the roads, which we know are pretty awful in the UK. RIP the motorist?
when a lifted pick up drives past my House the noise is exesive. The road surface also affects noise , especially pot holes and speed bumps.
Where I live, the majority of vehicles on the road are 4WD. The tyre noise from some of those is crazy loud. Others are just loud. However both are quieter than my motorbike. I wonder what the solution is to keep motorcycles safe while making the bikes quieter - often the noise is the only way drivers know I am around - it's easy to be in their blind spots.
This is beyond sad. I’m just feel lucky doing a few wonderful and very loud cars. And God bless Lamborghini! I am very lucky to own an STO and this thing is very loud in the Trofeo mode even at start up. I guess aftermarket exhaust manufactures have their work cut out for them for the next 10 or so years. I think I've expressed myself wrong in my previous comment, when I've said 'motoring journalism'. what I've meant is that autotrader is in the business of selling cars, not appease petrolheads. motoring journalism would include reporting on everything that affects the motoring industry (including upcoming regulations or even reviewing electric cars). but journalism becomes shilling when you start 'agreeing' with these overbearing regulations in order to protect your business or employer and it's clear that the autotrader youtube account (and its presenter) is about selling cars, not motoring entertainment.

One thing I wonder... since these are noise tests, and we have made great strides at noise cancelling headphones that just generate "noise" cancelling waves in smaller appliances, couldn't they just add extra external speakers to not drum out but equalise out the noise in regular driving modes, with the caveat that all the noise is not touched once the car is in a track-only mode? Sure, the electric installation and car body engineers would have to work their magic in order to a) build and strategically place such noise cancellers within car's structure, b) tune the setiings to actively dampen respective harmonics or sound levels before they "leave" the car's body... I guess maybe Yamaha experts could generate such a prototype for future LFA, to offer both the great noise when wanted and silence when needed ;)

These rules are killing off the excitement and drama you get when driving a sports car. It’s not all about the straight line speed. Just look at the mess the BMW i4 m50 is, great in a straight line but hit a nice twisty B road and it falls apart with its 2.200kg curb weight which is 500kg higher that the ICE M4. You should watch Harry’s Garage review on it.
Also Emissions Analytics a UK based independent emissions testing firm have suggested that an EV’s extra weight causes excess tire wear thus causing far more particulates in the atmosphere. These particulates are a 1000 times worse for your health than tailpipe emissions. Leading to higher instances of cancer. Look, fossil fuelled cars is not the future but nor are EV’s if we truly care about our environment then we need to get serious and find a true alternative to Petrol.

In Japan, the GTR can be set to limit top speed based on locations, like release full top speed on track only. I believe manufacturers can also limit engine noise based on GPS data, like build up areas or even local time. Everything is just a bit of software.
I personally would not want to drive a vehicle that multiple times a day gets controlled from some satellite location.

I had high hopes that hydrogen-powered ICE cars would be the next big thing so that we could continue to enjoy internal combustion; what I did not know is that noise regulations are becoming this strict. Regardless of how well hydrogen cars perform emissions wise, etc, they wont be sold because of noise.
Instead of "fixing" cars, maybe have a look at how much time the government is spending on useless regulations

So how does these strict EU regulations affect sport bikes. Just imagine you're sitting in your now muted Lambo and some guy rolls by on his BMW s1000rr with acropovic exhaust blowing your eardrums out.
I was just thinking that. I'm sad to see a lot of nice cars going, but I have to say there are certain bikes that are incredibly loud and annoying. Was thinking more Harleys, but see it with the sports bikes too.
Usually those aftermarket exhausts or decats are illegal, just unenforced. Plenty of pipes sold "for track use only" end up on bikes on the street.
It's usually not even hard to swap back on the stock pipe when the annual inspection rolls around.
they already affect bikes a lot. the Tyrol region of Austria has a complete ban on all motorcycles where the decible is higher than 95DB (the average from the showfloor sportsbike already goes over those limits)
Are they going after motorcycles and trucks/lorries too? I live on a big-ish road, the stuff on my desk is often literally vibrating/rattling when one of these comes past... Cars are never anywhere near as loud and have a much more enjoyable sound anyway...

From 82 to 72 decibels in 2016??? For those who may not be aware of this, a decibel is a logarithmic scale unit. This mean that it scales with the power of 10. So if you went from 82 to 81 that is 10 times quieter. 82 to 72 !!!! I am surprised that such a feat was even possible. Also I wonder how Amazing the streets sounded in the 70s!
The decibel scale doesn't work quite like that. A level of 80 decibels is 10 times louder than 70 decibels, not 100 times more. But I agree, reducing the level by a factor of tens (82 to 72) is still a big reduction.
A decrease of 10db is psycho-acoustically roughly a halfening of the perceived loudness of a sound. 82 to 72 means half as loud, not 100 times less or even 10 times less. You're both absolutely wrong. Where do you get these ideas from?
1db is literally defined as the smallest difference that a person can perceive; and that's typically a young person with great hearing, old people might need a difference of -2db to even notice it. -3db is a small but easily noticeable difference, -5db is a pretty small difference and so on. Beyond a certain point it's more about the language one chooses to describe things.
+1db is technically a 7% loudness increase and a 26% increase in acoustic power. If you want power levels (energy) and by that we're talking watts going into speakers 10W to 20W is roughly +3db, 10W to 100W is roughly +10db and so on.

@@Gynra You are right of course. For some insane reason I treated the increase of 1 in the logarithmic scale as x10 instead of +10 which is the case for a logarithmic scale with base of 10.

MOT includes a noise test, but it seems to be at the discretion of the tester as it doesn’t require a decibel meter.

Ok, well that explains all the soft limiters on new performance vechiles as well as pumping fake noise into cabins.
Although here's a better idea for manufacturers if they are listing.
Pump out noise cancelling frequency outside the vechile that are specifically directed towards testing conditions.
Also vechiles could then also have a "track mode" that has no restrictions because of course noise restrictions only apply on the road not on private or corporate owned racetracks.

Noise cancellation can't work like that, it needs a small, controlled environment.

Sonic waves with opposing cancelling frequencies to the car exhaust can be targeted 3 meters directly behind the vechile where the tester measures the DB the exhaust is producing.
As for a moving vechile test, yes I admit that you won't be able to do that one atm. However that is more to do with tyre and wind drag noise not exhaust which is not as relevant as the point is to bring back exhaust sounds in sports vechiles.

With the success of the new Nissan Z, their ideas about where they were going with the next generation of GT-R have changed abruptly. The people have spoken, they want manual transmissions, and classic design. The GTR is not known for either. The next GT-R was initially planned to stay only combustion, and have an upgraded version of its current body design. However the success of the new Nissan Z has shown Nissan that the public wants the next GTR to have body lines, and throwback details that hail back to its most popular predecessors, and that the public wants their stick shifts back! This means that the new GT-R will have more features reminiscent of the R34, and will have a 6-speed manual stick shift transmission, and hybridized power plant. These were not the directions they had intended on going before the release of the new Nissan Z, so changes have to be last minute and that means ending production of the current GTR model, in order to free up resources to allocate towards the redesign of the GT-R. That's the real reason why Nissan halted production of the current generation of GTR.

Car noise is a safety feature, as it is with motorcycles. If you can't hear what's coming round the corner how do you know its safe to cross?
My thoughts are in the modern era cars need to have a fair amount of noise I’m not saying they need to be loud AF muscle cars or anything of that sort but with so many people having headphones and Bluetooth and all that while they’re walking down the street it’s nice to be able to hear if you had a call coming that way you can look up and pay attention

Wow. It's hard to believe you put up with THAT level of regulation where just the tire noise can get the car banned. Cars are a bit noisy, get over yourselves. If we still used horses, they make WAY more than 68 decibels. And how bucolic are they? Every car is just going to have a button for quiet and loud or your cars are going to be terrible and under 100 HP, because... how, other than an underpowered engine, are you going to have a 4000 hunk of metal and rubber going 65 mph quieter than a fan? It's silly!
The fun factor of the car is shifting. I'm okay with the fun of car changes to something that doesn't cause pollution or safety hazard.

I find it weird that I used to complain about all the cool cars us here in the US didn’t get compared to the UK, and now the complete opposite is occurring. WE’RE getting the cool cars while the UK isn’t. Meanwhile, the US isn’t as great in terms of available racetracks compared to what’s on offer across the pond

I understand the point in turning down the noise of cars.
But I think sportscars are the only type of cars in the future that got a justification to still run with petrol - because it makes a difference in these cars.
95% of the people actuallly don't care about the powertrain of their car, they just think they do. They claim that they want to have sound - while driving a 2l Volkswagen Passat. They speak about the weight of electric cars, while sitting in their BMW X5. Most of the people want to have torque, reach, availability, low costs and comfort. They'll be pretty fine with an electric car.
Those 5% of real Petrolheads out there drive today allready a car which celebrates the petrol engine. A proper hothach, power coupe, roadster or a full grown sportscar. They like to have petrol engines for a reason and the sound is one of them.
So what's my point?
In the future, I see 95% of the customer in rich countries driving electric cars - and they'll be totally fine with it. Their cars even need to be louder at lower speeds for pedestrian safety reasons ^^
The other 5% - who has propably watched that great video a minute ago - should get the possibility to enjoy the sound of their petrol car in places where nobody is disturbed.
Today the Exhaust-Sound can be modified and turned down pretty good by exhaust-flaps or mapping. Sure its not the best option for the engine, but it works.
But who guarantee that the driver will stick to the future law and silences the engine for e. g. in the town?
Nobody but the driver himself. As nobody controls the speed, the route or any other behavior of the car that can cause a conflict with laws. Its like always when people aren't convinced by the purpose of a law and don't accept it:
The probability to get caught multiplied with the severity of the fine will determine whether people stick to the law or not. As simple as that.
So let the Petrol-sportscars of the future have a loud and a quiet side. And make sure the drivers respect other people's justified interest not to get blasted by the surely great, but to them momentarily annoying sound.
I don't believe it will go that way, to much effort in terms of laws and so on. But anyway, that would be my favorite. And by the way, there will be great electric sportscars aswell, am about to call myself a petrol - and a electricity-head 😄
How does it make sense to turn down the noise of cars? It's the most irrational thing I've ever heard... Most people walk around with silly airpods in anyway immersed in the sound of some 💩 music so why would they be concerned about the noise of cars.

rubbish. there are a lot of real petrolheads that drive something mundane because it fits their needs and budget. can you name a 'hot hatch' for example, with space for 5 adults in comfort, around 540 litres of boot space, can tow AND return over 50mpg while doing so, whilst being in the 'affordable' end of the budget, like available for £3-4k? give me a decent budget, id keep the family hack but have a V8 Mustang or an Aston Martin (with manual transmission of course) to fill my 'petrolhead' needs. but i havent the budget for a second car, and neither car suits my needs/budget for a daily. but by your theory im 'not a petrolhead'. utter nonsense. unlike most so called petrolheads, i actually DO have some idea what goes on with a car, unlike most petrolheads who just watch a few youtube videos, drive a few cars, repeat a few phrases they heard mechanics etc tell them about their cars, and they THINK they know their stuff.

Just everyone trying to attack anything that uses Fossil fuels. More regulation on them the harder it is to bend the lines. Therefore a hard push to wind and battery's powering everything. Wind power can never replace Fossil when it comes to powering the grids out there now.

This is some bullshit. Limits on tailpipe emissions - great, we all benefit from those. Limits on noise? Clearly we need *some* , but the main problem today is with people modifying their Fiesta to sound like a herd of elephants farting through a megaphone. They wouldn't pass the noise regs for a new vehicle. My understanding is that the MOT pass for noise is entirely discretionary on the part of the garage, so these cars don't really have a formal limit on them. *That* is where the new legislation needs to be. And the same goes for motorbikes, which are even more of a problem - literally nobody except the rider likes the sound of a bike.
But sports cars? Many people *do* like the sound of them, so long as they're not used antisocially, which should be a local police issue rather than a manufacturer one. There's a lot of culture wrapped around it. The current limits on new car noise are absolutely fine and do not need pushing any further.
And this is coming from an advocate for EVs. I want the vast majority of cars on the road to be electric, we'll all benefit from the improved air quality, reduced greenhouse effect, lower long-term costs and lack of reliance on imported oil... But there's very little harm in having sports cars, which comprise a tiny fraction of the market, keeping the emotional triggers that people buy them for.
(All that being said, I want an electric GT-R. The engine has never been that car's selling point, and we don't currently have any EVs designed with a focus on handling.)
F your ev, you can't make something that handles like a gtr with batteries, and how was the engine not the point of the car? It always had great performance for the soze and being able to tune it very easy to do more, there is NOTHING fun about a electric gtr, what made the r35 stay that long, what made people buy it is the mecanical experience it has, it's not a manual but nissan made the gearbox make sounds in the cabin on purpose so you can feel the gears grinding to push the car. You don't get that with a pathetic poopoo car.
The GTR’s engine was so advanced for its time, it can still hold its own today and it is so tuneable. So as in a lot of performance cars, the GTR’s engine plays a part in defining the vehicle. However, I like the point you made about antisocial behaviour. I strongly believe some of the noise regulations, is the result of modified rackets being driven hard where they aren’t supposed to be driven hard. It is definitely not the defining factor, but we are not doing ourselves ANY favours by doing what we see a lot of people do in inappropriate surroundings.
@@antoniohagopian213 batteries help handling, they lower the centre of gravity and spread the weight distribution evenly across the floorplan. The problem is with many manufacturers fitting giant batteries that make the cars heavy, but the GT-R itself is not a light car: it's about the same as a Tesla Model 3.
From day 1, the big thing that people have always criticised the GT-R for is that it doesn't have the sound or soul of competitors from Porsche or Jaguar, or the supercars it initially humbled. It's a prime candidate for going electric.

This is getting silly. Granted you don't want something that makes a lot of noise all the time but there has to be some common sen..... oh yeah, that went years ago.
I think there should be separate rule for sports cars, as they account for a minute amount of the total cars currently on the road.
That is what they should consider : What about batterie efficiency and degradation? What about batteries gas emissions? What about the cost of replacement of a battery every 2 or 3 years ? And the fact that e-v will never be cheaper ?
I think that hybrid diesel cars are the best from cost efficiency and for the pocket .
there are some 2013 teslas with around a million miles on them already... clearly, the longevity is there. also, once the battery really does degrade so much that it's useless, it's very easy to recycle it back into raw materials.
it's also only a matter of time until economies of scale ramp up, and EVs become cheaper than ICE cars.
hybrid turbine cars (burning diesel) would have given EVs a really good run for their money - you'd be able to get around 70% brake thermal efficiency out of a turbine with a hybrid system.... but the auto industry really wanted to keep selling everyone 1930s technology, and now they're having their lunch eaten
