Hehehe, so interesting why the two black people were disturbed about the braids. As far as I know, braiding is culturally appropriate. I am a Filipino and I can confirm it. ;-)
Braiding is also common in the Philippines, not because Filipinos copy or adore the other race with braid culture, but because it is also part of our culture in the Philippines. I am a Filipino, and I have straight hair, as a kid, growing up my parents prefer to fix my hair in a braided way. I have a thick hair and it keeps falling down if the hair style is not tight, so braiding my hair is the best option to keep it manageable, especially during school hours that I'm away from my mom that could fix my hair if she's around. I learned from my mom how to braid. My mom learned it from her own mom. My ancestors did not learn it from other race/foreigners.
I was more surprised when I tried to braid Black American Asian kid, and the reaction that I got from black relatives of this little girl was too much for me to take. Like, "Girl, you know how to braid?! What?!" with loud voice. In my head, "What was that reaction about?". I was like "Is this not common in the USA that almost everyone knows how to braid?" In the Philippines, a child knows how to braid at a young age, that's what I knew, based on my experience and the neighborhood I grew up. Even at school, when we have an event like dancing or singing, the option is to fix our hair during our performances are either braid or hair bun. Though braiding is more common for females to learn, not a lot of male can braid. Because in the Philippines, male students at a very young age up to college/university, they are required to have a clean cut/barber cut. They are not allowed to grow their hair while studying.
My mom and her siblings, all have curly and kinky hair, I rarely see them braiding their hair, I think it's because though they know how to braid, they opt to do the easy hair fix (like hair bun, head/hair band, pigtail, ponytail, etc.). In the Philippines, if we think that we need our hair fixed all throughout the day and we do not have options such as hair net or we do not like other style, we'll choose braiding our hair tightly, so that we do not have to keep fixing our hair. My brothers and my husband have curly and kinky hair, but they don't opt to let their hair grow longer and braid it. They would rather have their hair trimmed every couple of months. It's more practical.
Now, braiding hair is becoming more popular because of social media. A lot of people is consuming a lot of videos that they can relate with like having a curly/kinky hair. People can find a lot of styles of braiding, more than the info that transferred to them by their relatives/neighbors/friends.

"varying braid patterns".

We already practiced braiding in pre-colonial times. While some Filipinos might braid their hair out of cultural admiration for hip-hop, the Philippines also has its own braiding traditions. Braiding isn’t exclusive to dark-skinned indigenous Filipinos, like the Aetas and other Negrito groups, even other indigenous Filipino tribes practiced braiding. Many cultures worldwide have their own unique braiding traditions as well.
I know the history of braiding in African cultures and have also read about history of braiding in Navajo, Norse, and Indian cultures. We all have our own traditions, and sometimes, even when we're on opposite ends of the world, it's surprising how similar some practices are. I hope we can learn more about other cultures so we can appreciate the shared practices around the world and not get offended without recognizing that others have similar traditions too.

@@AngryKittens What I'm trying to say is that the original commenter said that braiding has been a part of Filipino culture long before colonialism and I agree to that, pero there are different types of braiding styles. If you want to see braiding in PH visit Ayala Museum, NM of Anthropology, or Museo Ilocos Norte. Honestly I can't do all the research for you, you can do it yourself (well, if you really want to know). And kung yung braiding style na nasa video, Vikings had similar styles, including dreadlocks.

Its same with chicano sub culture in japan they idolizes it they want to dress, look and act like latinos, why get offended? Many pinoy idolizes black culture from music like jazz and hiphop and it look cool with black people, they want to look cool as well. Even gangs were copied in the 90s. Its already mentioned before, many culture has their own style of braiding its not exclusive for black people only.

You cant always expect people to be sensitive about you, people have too much shit to worry about other than your FEELINGS.
