    Let's Cut the Cable! Power Distribution Made EASY! Anderson Power Poles
    Tired of those long cables for the telescope. Do you wish there was an easy way to shorten them? Let me show you how you can accomplish them. It is kinda fun cutting the wires. I will introduce you to Anderson Power Poles, and how I use them. I will also show you a small modification I made to the DIY Flat panel.

    We have been using this type of connector in Ham radio for a number of years. So simple to use and very reliable.

    Great tutorial! As you tried to get the connector into the socket it comes to my mind what my mentor used to say:
    „how did you know you’re doing this stuff too long? You slip with the screwdriver , drive it a centimeter into your finger and don’t even bother to swear“ 😝

    Hi Amy, my DIY flat panel worked on 5v to 24v so I attached a RCA/Phono jack to it and powered it off of my dew heater as that let me control the light and get rid of one more thing.
    I also created a custom cable with built in fly leads coming off it at the exact points needed for my gear, no need for a bulky distribution post. Just make sure you get a good enough gauge of cable which should be too hard as astro gear doesn't draw much current. I found the Anderson powerpoles to be too bulky so just used those same 12v barrel jacks fly leads you found. Its a bit of a hydra with one cable and seven heads.

      It really is! I believe when I put my Starwave 80mm back online I will go to this simpler method. It just works.

    Big fan of the power poles and the powerworx power distribution - I was doing exactly what you have shown in this vid until I got an ioptron CEM70G with integrated power and data in the saddle. In some ways I still prefer the power pole method...

    A nice project to tidy the cables, thanks! Just be careful not to put the crimp too far into the crimping tool, it appeared that only one side of the tool just caught the end of the barrel. The round part of the crimp should be crimped all the way along…. Difficult to see though

    I have setup my system a couple of years ago with the same parts. It works great. You can buy wires with the Anderson connectors already crimped on from Amazon. I even added fuses the middle of each wire. Just for safety.

    I just recently discovered your channel. It looks like we've gone down many of the same paths. You are my people.
    An idea for a future video might be to make your own dew heater controller / power distribution box. I've made a few of these... just a little bit of planning and a lot of drilling holes and soldering.

      Thank you for the compliment. Hmmm a dew heater. Those are expensive. A DIY solution on the cheap would be great.

    Amy, is the power supply box the same one you modified at one time in the past cutting the power output down to 13.1 volts? Great video. Working to convert my system over to the Anderson plugs.

    • @AmyAstro
      @AmyAstro  2 роки тому

      Wow, long time watcher I see. Yes it is the same power supply. Works great! The power poles are very reliable.

  • @Paul-mx4fi
    @Paul-mx4fi 2 роки тому

    This a a great idea and a cost savings. But, how much current does the 12 volt power supply (ps) provide? As you add more devices, it's possible to max out the current of the ps. I would venture to guess that one would have to add up the amperage of each device first to see if it can handle it.

      The 12vdc just simplifies how many cables I need to carry. I use it on the dimmest setting.

    Great tutorial, though you were scaring me with the screwdriver pushing on the connector. Looked like a sure way to a puncture wound. Just a suggestion, but a better way would to be to hold the plug with pliers and push down against the bench top. If the screwdriver slips at least your hand is not in the way.

    • @AmyAstro
      @AmyAstro  2 роки тому

      I completely agree with you. It did slip once. Hard part was trying to show and keep it on screen. lol
