    I have to admit that when I got my soft boxes I didn't realize they came with baffles. Next problem, I didn't know where I had put them after setting up the kit. After a couple of hours searching my studio, garage, kitchen drawers I found them in the loft in the original packaging (Under the Christmas decorations, spare duvet etc). Thanks again for a great video!

    Nicely eggsplained Joanie, especially considering how many aspects there are to explain. It's so freeing when you can use artificial light, once you get to the root of how to use it. Now, no matter how grey and rainy it is here in the UK, it is possible to shoot all day, anywhere. It's the cherry on the cake. Lettuce spread the word so more pips get the tang of it, and they'll love it, then there won't be mushroom for natural light in their photography... ;)

    When I was teaching college photography we talked about the size of the light source controlling whether it was diffused or specular. Of course, moving a light back, as you said, makes it smaller and moving it forward makes it bigger. Thanks, always great to watch your videos.

    Hi Joanie, great video series, I have been looking for this kind of information for the longest time. Thank you.
    My question for you, not really a question ... but I noticed that with all the different lights you used, they all faced forward, not angled down towards the subject food. Is this important? or is it because it really doesn't matter and the diffuser just spreads the light around so much?
    Also I am going to set up a UA-cam cooking channel. Would love to see a behind the scenes of one of your cooking videos from beginning to end including the photo for Instagram at the end.

    • @TheBiteShot
      @TheBiteShot  6 років тому

      Yep, the course takes you from walking through all the gear, all of the settings on it, setting it up for a scene, how to create a proper exposure with flash, modifying and manipulating the light, comparisons of different kinds of flash gear, real life demonstrations of setups with artificial light including a setup of dark and moody, light and airy and somewhere in between. It's a start to finish guide of all you'd need to know to rock some flash.

      @TheBiteShot  6 років тому

      On-camera flash is great for shooting at events and for portrait work. Perhaps there's someone out there who uses on camera flash for food, but I haven't ever personally found it to be flattering to the food in the way that I like.

      You could use the flash on camera but bounce it off a white wall next to you, maybe off the ceiling, even if the white wall is behind you, turn the head of the flash to bounce it. It may not be perfect, but it can work at a push. If you want to buy a small softbox for a speedlight, use the Lastolite Ezybox Speedlite 2. It was designed for a speedlight used on the hotshoe. I'd stay away from using the popup flash and use a speedlight on the hotshoe, which will allow you to bounce the light, or use this small softbox.

    Thanks so much for the video! So informative as usual. I have a silly question but can’t seem to find the answer anywhere. I use my black wooden dining table as the background and when I use artificial light it reflects SO much in the table surface. Am I doing something wrong or is it just because I need to get a background from a different material? The table is not particularly glossy, just standard wood so I worry I will have the same effect if I invest in a background.

    • @TheBiteShot
      @TheBiteShot  5 років тому

      I personally recommend flash when starting out because of the affordability factor. Check out the video published right before this one for more detail on that. As far as aperture, I usually select that based on the kind of scene/subject I'm shooting and the look and feel I'm going for....wide or narrow depth of field then adjust my other settings to adjust for the proper exposure.

      Ohhh 👍 Thanks a lot for your answer. I always thought my UA-cam Videos would look and sound great. But yours.... AWESOME 💥💥💥 Specially, your "ON A TABLE WITH A MACBOOK" Videos are fantastic. A very personal "sunday"-atmosphere. In German we call sunday = Sonntag 😊 (Sorry for my english 😅 This was better once...) Regards from a small town in Germany ✌️

    Hi. Do you ever use a reflector to fill shadows? Do you ever light from the rear?

      I light from behind a lot, you can see examples if you visit my Instagram. I sometimes use a reflector, but honestly, I love shadows

      Thank you. I'm keen to try out food photography - as a portrait photographer I have the gear ... it's just a shame that my cooking is so average!
