BAROTRAUMA - There's Nothing Like It... | Complete Review (1.0 Release)

- Barotrauma is a hard game to review. On paper, it's nothing particularly special... yet the game's quirky gameplay and unhinged, hilarious community combine to create something completely unique. I can't recommend it to everyone, especially not at full price, nor could I blame you for sinking 500+ hours into it. So, I suppose all I CAN do is offer you another short, spoiler-free review!

Barotrama with friends is unbeatable. So happy to see it hit 1.0!
Just beat it
I think a lot of these ratings could have been higher. On the surface, the game might be a 3 overall, but the longer you play it, the more depth (ha?) it has. Everything from crafting to navigating silently to the plethora of medical treatments to the quirks of each ship to the many enemies you might face, I've been playing for a long time, and there's still a ton to learn. If you play it for a day or two, you really aren't getting the full picture of the game. And 1.0 also released a lot of major features to the game, so we still likely haven't scratched the surface in the last 24 hours.
I actually went into my review process expecting to give Barotrauma higher scores, because I do enjoy playing it. While scoring it, however, I begrudgingly came to the conclusion that I like this game primarily for its community, less so for its actual design. Of course, there is a ton of depth to the gameplay, as you note, and I think the game has a long, happy life ahead of it (before it's mauled to death by mudraptors).
@@MEGAthemicro bro ur tripping lmao
Just found your channel. Love the format of these reviews. Quick, informative, funny, and most importantly, actually provides critiques and praises unlike the dozens of "let's play videos" masquerading as reviews. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for the kind words, Jonathan! More reviews to come :)
A pretty fair review. Barotrauma is hit-or-miss and quite niche overall. But for someone who does happen to enjoy it, it can provide many hours of entertainment.
Pointing out the "cooperative storytelling" aspect is probably the most important part. The game naturally creates fun and intense stories, and that's great. Me and my friend have been running a campaign for a while now, slowly making progress on a modified Barsuk, with me adding more parts to it in the editor as we progress deeper into the ocean. That piece of scrap submarine holds a lot of sentimental value for us after all the missions we've completed on it.
I think the only big problem Barotrauma has right now is its price. The game very heavily relies on multiplayer and the ridiculous price tag is an effective deterrent to people giving it a shot at all.
Completely agree re: price. I like Barotrauma and wish I could recommend it without reservation, but the high-end AA price is absolutely a deterrent. After all, there are dozens of F2P multiplayer titles that give Barotrauma a run for its money when it comes to creating compelling, memorable adventures with friends and strangers alike. Speaking of, I wish you and your friend the best of luck on your continuing journey :)
They need to find a sweet spot, low enough to encourage newbies to buy but high enough to keep the loser trolls out so we can keep the games charming fun griefers rather than toxic ones out to cheat or just ruin everyone's day
@@theorangewarrior03 The sweet spot for a game like Barotrauma is $20. The highest "viable" price is $25.
Griefers also aren't much of a problem due to the game thankfully focusing on player-hosted servers. We don't rely on devs for server moderation. That allows cheaters and griefers to get banned from most servers very quickly.
@@NotWendy3 oh awesome I got the game yesterday after seeing how great or looked so I'm glad I won't have to worry about trolls and can just have fun online
The visuals look cool. Kind of like a mix between Sunless Seas and The War is Mine. The game on the whole though doesn't seem to be anything like those two games.
Still, your review did a fair job of convincing anyone who might be interested in it, I feel. So props for that!
Man... now I can't stop thinking about a Sunless Sea/TWOM hybrid. It might play a bit like Barotrauma, actually 😆 Regardless, thanks for watching and commenting!
It's great, I recommend it
The mods add at least 1 point to the score as the amount of additional content found on the workshop is staggering
Agreed, the mods are impressive. Barotrauma's community is its strongest selling point, IMO.
Recently came across your channel and i love the format, thanks u so much for this videos! :)
You've very welcome! Thank you for the kind words and welcome to the channel :)
well constructed video! Although honestly the story wasn't in before 1.0 so its hard to judge that yet
Thanks, Lennic! Alas, 1.0 doesn't add a more in-depth narrative to Barotrauma, though it does replace the brief Early Access endgame cutscene with a more satisfying (and somehow even more trippy) conclusion.
@@MEGAthemicro What about the Tormsdale report? Or all the new lore about the ancients? Although I guess you could miss a lot of it.
Good question! I consider lore to be part of my "World" micrometric, as it's often indirectly consumed, whereas "Plot" is defined as a direct (and mostly unavoidable) narrative sequence of events. So, while 1.0 does add a lot of world-building elements to Barotrauma, I still left the Plot score as unranked because there isn't a traditional narrative in the game.
One thing I will say in regards to the price is that Barotrauma has had quite a few free weekends in the past, and might have more in the future. These free weekends were always very chaotic for my barotrauma group, since each time we'd use the opportunity to bring in more players from our extended friend group to experience the depths with us.
Yes, good point! I originally bought the game for $5 and it's absolutely worth it if you can snag it on some sort of sale.
I bought it for $7.49 on sale. That's a fair price for it. I can't imagine I'd ever have paid $35 for it.
Yay, i was hoping you would do a review of this one. Thank you
You bet, Chris! Sorry if you were hoping for higher praise 😅
I wanted to begrudge the 3/5 but this was a very fair review, hope you come back when there's more features! :)
Thanks, Moufisto! I definitely plan on revisiting Barotrauma in the future :)
Play with friends in a closed server, download mods, new locations and submarines from workshop, remember that the story was revamped in 1.0 and it will be a solid 4,5-5.0 experience
really good review
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
hey i know one of thoes servers you showed, its the funnni traitor mod. really kewl that you are giving more comunity stuff from baro a show off
I love that server! Barotrauma's community is arguably its best part, and I loved getting a chance to show it off during this review :D
i think the scoring system is reductive and abstract and formuleic, but hey.
I won't disagree, insofar as every scoring system is inherently reductive/formulaic.
but still better then just one general score, no? maybe it could be boiled down to fewer catogaries.
@@MEGAthemicro so dont do them? there are alternatives that respects the complexity of games.
@@djwindkind no scores, they bad, usefull but bad.
Again, I can't disagree that boiling criticism down to numbers is an imperfect process. But there are SO MANY channels out there that feature either no scoring system at all or a single (often arbitrary) number at the end of the review that I figured I could carve out a niche with a more elaborate system.
Ultimately, I like to think of gaming journalists as all indirectly working together to give people an idea of whether a purchase is worth it. Thus, I welcome folks to check out long-form, non-scoring review channels, in addition to mine, when it comes to deciding whether a game is right for them :)
Hello! You should start your videos with your voice. It almost lost me because I didn't realize it was professionally made until you spoke. But then I heard your voice and I was like "okay this is what I was looking for." I would start with that so you don't lose viewers! The video was super helpful and well made, thank you!
Hi! Thank you very much for the feedback. This review is unique in that it's the only one with a long gameplay intro, so I think you'll find my other reviews to be more what you're looking for :)
honestly just dont go on public servers just get a bunch of friends preferably at least 3
I kinda like the chaos of an all-rando public server, but the game is also a blast with friends.
@@MEGAthemicro yeah its alot of fun for the most part even with randos even tho they can just be annoying on occasion
@@MEGAthemicro There is a traitor server usually always up that starts with a G. You've probably already seen it before as it's hosted by Trusted Seas. I highly recommend it
Yes! I love that server. And traitor servers, generally 😈
Shame that this wasn't mentioned in the video. I was hoping there was a progression category? Like... are sessions just a one off? Do you get anything of a run for your next run like a rogue like?
Any unlockables or... what's the progression like, if any?
Great questions, and sorry for not touching on progression in the review! Unless a server host manually backs up your character data such that it can be transferred between campaigns, you won't retain any progress from one playthrough to another. That said, players can unlock class-specific "talents" and keep their inventory between campaign missions, but this is all wiped when the host ends the session.
So, there's two ways to play the game. Single Mission or Campaign. If you play a single mission, no there is no progression. The campaign is a series of linked single missions, like 30 or so, that are connected where you bring your submarine (and all the crew) with you between missions. Its kinda like how you can play DnD as a single session, or multiple sessions in a linked campaign. Each mission takes like 20 minutes to an hour or so depending on the mission type, and how much shit hits the fan (or longer, if playing with others and you take like 4 objectives at the same time)
Edit: There is no meta progression, but in a campaign your character does get experience and level up in their field, gaining perks that give you new bonuses or unlocking new crafting materials. But that character is locked to that save file, you cannot bring them with you to a new submarine. Also, if you die, then you can chose to respawn in 5 minutes and lose experience, or wait until the submarine docks.
@@MEGAthemicro Thank you! That clears it all up.
@@Ghoulicus Thank you for such an elaborate reply. Appreciate it!
If you start a campaign you can reload it from your save and it also saves other players progression so they should load with their items as well
I have a question - how the fuck do you only have 3k subs? I love your reviews so fucking much!
Bless you, RWC! I really appreciate the support :) maybe one day we'll hit it big!
It sounds similar to Space Station 13, but simplier. Even the clown seems inspired by SS13.
It is actually one the main inspirations from it, the clown honk sound actually uses the same sound from SS13
A fair review. For me a solid 5 but i think that everyone who plays it and every time they play it even you can have a different experience. so i think any score could be fair lol.
Very true! I've definitely had some 5/5 sessions in Barotrauma... some 1/5s, too 😅
Much like Phasmophobia and Valheim, I play BT alone. Therefore I can avoid the griefers and listen to the background music.
I can't imagine playing Phasmophobia alone 🙈 you, Sir Chadwick, are a braver man than am I.
Man, I got kinda down watching this lol. I feel like it deserves a higher score, but I don't know *where* it'd get the points ): Only place I can think of is soundtrack ("Matching upstream" is a banger)
Have you considered adding some sort of scale for creativity or design? I feel like the originality of the game and the uniqueness of the monsters and world is its main strong suit.
Aw, I'm sorry to get you down! This review kinda bummed me out, too, to be honest-I went in expecting to give higher scores, but struggled to justify them. As for creativity and design, I largely package those elements into my "World" micrometric. For what it's worth, I came very close to giving Barotrauma a "4" for World.
@@MEGAthemicro Ty for the response ❤
I belive this review is OK, although think this scoring chart has added zero to evaluating this genre of games. I guess for other games made more sence, but for my taste I would use more abstract values. (I dont belive there is a perfect chart that will be able to reflect the values of all genres)
Agreed, Barotrauma doesn't lend itself particularly well to this (or any other) scoring system. I had a fairly unfun time making this review, for that reason. Still, thanks for watching and providing feedback-it's always appreciated!
Today barotrauma is getting out from beta, with a big update, at least it's supposed to be.
I'm just saying ;)
yeah cant wait to jump into a new campaign
@@fehmibilgin2114 Clowns 🤡 Faction campaign here we go!!!
2019 game that just got a full release is a "cult classic"? Mkay..
I suppose "has a cult following" would've been more accurate.
i call this game braintrauma
That's accurate on multiple levels 😜
@@MEGAthemicro PC gamer called this game a dwarf fortress like game
but these bozos skipped the credits and it obviously said it was inspired by space station 13 cause of the clowns
but yeah i recorded some clips then endworm had a different skin but after several updates some things need a start over
i also tried to build my own submarine but i cant access the files anymore so remake em from scratch
I would say it is mediocre in its parts but unique in its composition. Not for everyone.
Agreed, my scoring system does Barotrauma no favors, despite it being a fun little game.
i think the scoring system is flawed cuz this masterpiece aint a 3/5
Just curious, what would your scoring breakdown be using this system?
@@MEGAthemicroSorry if my english os bad its not my first language
I think the scores you gave are pretty good, but i feel like some things are missing. The 15 categories used dont really cover all of the strenghts a game can have
I would add some catrgorys for multiplayer, maybe the enjoyability with friends, the enjoyability with randoms, and how many players can be in a session.
I would also add replayability and how easy it is to pick up. This gets it up to 20 so you can divide it down for a score out of 5
Edit: Hope this was helpful :)
@@hamburgerman805 Cool, thank you for the suggestions! I'm always looking for ways to make the channel better, so I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me :)
@@MEGAthemicro :)
great review, but don't forget the bite 😊❤
Thanks so much, Iorenz! Speaking of bites, MEGA the microbite-sized reviews would be fun-maybe UA-cam Shorts where I just rapid fire review each of the 15 categories. Not sure if people would find that helpful, though...
@@MEGAthemicro i personally dont watch shorts, coz i click on one, and bam, an hour has pased. also i mostly have YT in the background with a game in focus. but do it, if you got the motivation, it seems to be a great promo tool, and got monetized as well lately... but maybe just give an overview and final score to tease the full review?
oh and did i hear goat to be your name?
Cool, I've been thinking about something along these lines for a while... probably not enough free time to pull it off, but we'll see.
And "goat" as my name? No haha but that sounds a bit like "Scope" which is how I've been referring to myself on here. Hence my recurring "MEGA the microscope" :D
Review is 3.1/5
Shit take, it’s a cult classic come and drink the koolaide fren, the water is fine…
Barkeep! Another round of ice-cold Europan ice spire ale to wash down that shittiest of takes 🍻 cheers!
Yes, this game isn't that good to be honest
but with some mod, this game can be 4/5
EuropaWaifu++ mod = 5/5
