The picture quality of this show is so crisp for a video-based project. More than I can say for the contemporary filmed Jeremy Brett-starred Sherlock Holmes episodes, also produced by Granada.
Some really good performances here but I must mention Tom Chadbon who plays Simon Wood brilliantly and who is a wonderful actor and the late John Benfield who played DI Brook and becomes one of my favourite TV characters of all time in the later episodes. And as always, genius writing from Roger Marshall. David
I've watched the first six episodes so far, and concur with you over Tom Chadbon - especially following the situation with he and Aubrey at the Derbyshire cottage in a later episode. John Benfield brings an understated but compelling approach to DI Brook. There's a real rapport between him and Ramsey. I'd actually go to say I prefer this series to Travelling Man. Seems to have more depth (no pun intended!), and I like the atmosphere and space in the production. Also, the main score is much preferable to the digital panpipes theme that starts to grate early on in TM - though there are also rather distracting digital synth embellishments here and there in Floodtide. But all in all, these episodes are a good watch. And I get to test my poorly remembered schoolboy French as well. After viewing the series so many times, I wonder if you've wanted to visit the locations. I can tick-off Fleetwood, and I think maybe Cherbourg is also shown. Gatteville-le-Phare looks an attractive spot, and we know where the front door key is kept for that seafront cottage! Are the old town sequences Bayeaux do you think? Encouraging to see some positive comments cropping up for the show.
@@FoogouFilms Yes, I prefer Floodtide to TM (although I did enjoy the TM series). Granada must have had quite a budget for Floodtide. Philip Sayer was brilliantly cast and he was Hollywood B list at his far too early death from cancer. He starred in Shanghai Surprise with Madonna and Sean Penn (there's a really nice letter from her to him once she finds out he was ill on the internet somewhere). I think Ramsey's cottage is in Barfleur (harbour), just down the road from Gatteville. In summer 2020 we took a summer break in Derbyshire and I was desperately trying to find some of the locations there (the pub, and Wood's cottage) but my wife and kids got bored...another one to do in retirement! The Bull Hotel in Fairford appears in S2 and there is Fleetwood of course as you rightly say. Yes it does seem to have got a positive response. BTW, not sure if this is allowed but a great series of interviews with Roger Marshall from 2012 in the link below: blogs.reading.ac.uk/spaces-of-television/page/4/ I'm also in mourning for the last Hadleigh next Friday 😢 Cheers, David
@@dsummers1966 Ah, thanks for pointing me in the right direction as regards Ramsey's cottage. I found that Madonna letter here: bid.omegaauctions.co.uk/auction/lot/265-madonna-interest----original-painting-by-christopher-ciccone-a-madonna-signed-photo-a-madonna-handwritten-letter/?lot=45407&sd=1 Yes, it's really tender and authentic. I'm also often met with a certain lack of enthusiasm when location-hunting. Though for me it's usuallly prehistoric monuments. Actually, that is where the name Foogou comes from (though with spelling adapted): cave-like stone structures. I actually came across that Roger Marshall interview a few months ago when trying to find out a bit more about him. But thanks for the reminder link anyway.
