@@dvdlog what difference does the 2 extra tweeters on the 1st gen make? Most reviewers have mentioned that the 2nd gen homepod sounded better and volume is more or less the same as 1st gen homepod…
@@sayemak99 more tweeters probably play better high tones. The volume is for speakers. In the video I liked the first gen like the reviewer said. The 2nd gen is not better than the previous one and the price is not fair
1:40 yeah you see that’s the thing I find odd too, why does the OLD HomePod have wifi AC mimo, which is significantly faster than what the newest one has, maybe Apple thought they needed more headroom for lossless playback before they released it?
It’s the clarity for me on the new HomePod. You can hear every distinct sound in the music samples you were using compared to the OG. I can def hear Dolby Atmos doing it’s thing. But I’ll miss the bass that came with the originals.
Dolby Atmos is just marketing here. Atmos usually refers to full spherical placement of audio sources and this right here gives you only one point of sound which makes no sense to have Atmos on. Also, clarity depends mostly from the DSP (software tuning of the speakers) than the actual hardware.
Little known fact. You can add a subwoofer by using an Apple AirPort Express and a RCA to 3.5mm cable. Enable it in "Temporary Audi Output". I have mine hooked up to a Klipsch R-12SW and it sounds fantastic!
This has definitely been the best sound test comparison between the Gen 1 vs the Gen 2. I have 4 Gen 1's at home I love them so much. I definitely don't see a need for upgrading unless my G1's die on me. Great review thank you.
I have the OG and while I like the sound I have too many software and network issues with it to make me not want another one. I have to constantly reboot it to connect to my Apple TV. Same thing with my HomePod mini.
Yeah they’re pretty buggy unless you have the perfect environment with good WiFi for them. I’ve had mine for awhile and thinking of selling and getting a Sonos move
That’s why I ended up selling my OG and got the Mini instead. It seems to be an issue with the Apple A8 chip not having a strong network modem compared to the S7 chip. My Mini stays connected and ready to go no matter what.
This was a great comparison 😀 finally one where I can hear the difference while listening through my OG HomePods lol. Would love to see a mic comparison as well since the new HomePods have fewer mics. I’m always impressed how the HomePod 1 can hear me say “hey siri” over loud music while I’m 10 ft away and I’m wondering if the HomePod 2 would struggle with it 🤔
If you can get 2 1st gen home pods and an Apple TV 4K and play a Dolby atmos movie on it like Top Gun or Maverick. It’ll rock the room. Then do the Same test with 2 2nd gen HomePods and see how it sounds. Also with the first gens you can turn on and off base boost. I wonder if there is a base boost on the second gen you can turn on or did they bake in an EQ like older iTunes on the Macs had. Curious about these possible tweaks.
I hate to say this but it has been so long I am unable to find where you can do this. Try Googling it and see what it says. Also I don’t know if it is still available in the new iOS’
I went with the OG this morning and got it for 160 with shipping looking brand new with the box waited until the last 15 second to jump in the bid 😂, I have a mini and was wanting the HomePod so glad I watched this video because I was going to beat buy later today😂
Separation is better on gen 2. Original had mids popping out a bit more and therefore sounded a bid muddy to me. And of course it depends on the music you are listening to. The classical symphony music, for example, will be much better on gen 2. Not very many people listen to classic though.
Seems like OH has more bass, and the new one has less bass, and you can hear the lyrics more clearly. But its not by much at all! Not enough to upgrade if you want to even call it that. Losing 2 tweeters and mics seems like cost savings for a "lower" price on Apple's end. A mixer setting would make a great software update so you could make those adjustments manually and save them as EQs or even let you use EQs in the software.
In my opinion, you always need an EQ for get the best out of your speakers and headphones. And that’s what I never understand why Apple don’t allow us to make individual settings.
Great sound comparison. I’ll keep my stereo pair OG’s. I’m glad they have the big HomePod again. Should have been 199. Would not be able to keep them in stock. Wait for the sale.
I have a OG but now is dead ☠️ Suddenly one day it stopped working and never turned on again. It seems to be a bug that some models had. I have ordered a HomePod 2 and it will arrive in a few days, hopefully soon because the replacement speaker I have is a Sonos Hay and it doesn't link well with Apple TV and I don't like the sound for watching movies or series.
Why the removal of tweeters and microphones? An inferior wifi chip? Probably to satisfy people who complained that the HomePod was over engineered. Be careful what you wish for.
I am just buying 2 OG homepods tomorrow for 350 I want more bass rather than crispier sound so I heard that first homepod has more bass plus I am getting 2
You can not compare ist that way. You just have to sit on the couch, listen to some fine tunes, podcasts, movies and than you FEEL the difference. OG base is more „physical“ the new one is like.. cleanly fill the room with the most soothing base ever. It’s amazing.
Now I’m super disappointed, in your setup gen 1 sounds way better it’s much more vivid. In the last test at 100%, has gen 2 really distorted that much? It’s terrible.. I have one ordered few days ago and if it really sounds that way, I’ll send it back😢
@@Nhaja_R It arrived 5 days ago (switzerland) and the short answer is, today i sent id back. In one word, disharmonious. For me it sounded like they're 2 in 1 speaker which don't fit together. First listening impressions the 2nd Gen sounds more clear, more lively, The OG sounds Muffled in front of the 2nd Gen Homepod. However cannot make out any difference in BASS between the two.
Yup. And better dispersion because of two additional tweeters. And better Siri detection with loud music on because of more microphones. The processing power is better with the new one, but that’s about it. The original HomePod was absolutely revolutionary, from an audio standpoint. If you do a test sweep, that little speaker goes down to almost 20 Hz, which is comparable performance to my $1200 Adam audio subwoofer that goes with my studio monitor set up.
The 1st homepod sounds more lively and full.. HomePod 2 sounds more dry/sterile and slightly lackluster in comparison in this video. And this is me listening to this video from the new homepod 2
Another banger 💥 I like the comparison of the old to new home pod the older one has more bass rather than the new home pod has less bass with more clear sound
You’d have to be really careful about lining up the tweeters. It could be, that one of the tweeters was pointed directly into the microphone, and the other at a slight angle.
Not quite. It has better mid range but even then it doesn’t bc it makes it muddy and clash with vocals. Where as the HomePod mini and HomePod 2 actually brings vocal profiles forward and separated instrument sounds.

Well, I’ll keep my two paired first gen HomePod. No reason to pay more for less in term of internal parts and roughly the same sound. What’s the heck with the new two sensors. This is the typical marketing approach with Tim Cook: how to charge more for as little improvement as possible. One of the reason explaining the mild success of the 1sr gen in term of sales was its too high selling price. And now, they have increased the selling price. This is just stupid. Next step, Apple will say the 1st gen did not meet the expected numbers in term of sales, and neither did the 2nd gen. So, we drop this product line… IDIOTS!!
