A first sewing machine can be completely intimidating, and you have to learn how to use it. The simplest machine with knobs and levers worked best for me when I returned to sewing after a 20 year absence - and I’m still using it today. Rather than upgrading, I invested in an overlocker (serger) next.
I would definitely recommend going to a reputable sewing shop and trying out different machines, I had a machine in mind and after trying some out bought a completely different make and model…🤔😊
I bought my daughter a 'baby machine' from John Lewis and I ended up using it myself. I made everything including coats and jeans on it. They're sturdier than you think.
The best thing I did was go into a store and speak to a specialist! Not only did they have better and more exclusive model availability than the local department/hobby stores, I was able to try out the machine and get some tuition. I started out with a commercially available, basic mechanical machine until I was certain that I would pursue sewing as a serious hobby but it didn’t handle thicker fabrics well and jammed frequently. I’d fallen foul of over-researching and was about to sink a lot of cash into a model with hundreds of stitches and flashy features. Instead, the specialist was adamant a basic but sturdy computerised model was enough, and even when I said I could spend £100 more she refused to recommend the next model up because I simply wouldn’t need it (and they have a trade in guarantee for the first year of purchase). I love my 16 stitch machine, but it’s a model I absolutely would have never picked had I not gone into a sewing machine store and spoken to a specialist.
