      Picking a particular technique that I am 'less good at' to work on for that specific mini/group of minis (cheap Reaper Bones minis make this a cost effective strategy) and then adding that to the 'do it all the time' arsenal of skills

      At the begginign i just want better minis to play with and feel proud of them. Now there are 2 things, 1 i get inspired by Sergio Calvo and hope one day i can achive similar results if i wanted, 2 i try to build a business around minis and i need to have the skill to make display pieces to sell them.

    Another absolutely awesome video! I just got into miniature painting and these tips can really help me (especially the one with the light, I really need a good lamp already, bending my head and whole body so that the light from the window will hit the mini properly isn’t very comfortable he he). Thanks again for the tips and videos!

    • @Karina-Loves-Andreas
      @Karina-Loves-Andreas 3 роки тому +1

      Are you using a jewelers magnifier with a light on it? It helps! If you have crazy strong vision and don't need it, a head lamp can help. If you're using the window light to help figure out shade and light placement, you can always take photos of dark primed minis under your light source or zenithal primed minis to refer back to. I find a light on my head, either a headlight or a lighted headband magnifier helps a lot.

    • @Mr.Zigmond
      @Mr.Zigmond 3 роки тому

      @@Karina-Loves-Andreas thanks for the tips! I don’t really think I need a magnifying glass but a lamp or head light would be awesome to have. I’m actually using the light from my window just because it’s too dark without it and the light I have isn’t strong enough, so I’m actually just using this light to see the model. Thanks again!

    • @Karina-Loves-Andreas
      @Karina-Loves-Andreas 3 роки тому +1

      @@Mr.Zigmond I LOVE painting in natural light. I have a small deck, and sit outside and paint when I can. Also: Vince Venturella recommends a good desk lamp, even a cheap clip-on lamp, with one of those "daylight/natural spectrum" bulbs. If you paint by a window, then move to led or florescent light, your paint will look different. Esp light colors and whites. But on a tabletop, they still look fine (unless you're incredibly picky and under florescent or leds at the table). So if you do a beautiful job using daylight, then get an led lamp and find your light tones look splotchy, don't sweat it too much. They'll still look fine on a table top.

  • @Smilomaniac
    @Smilomaniac 3 роки тому +3

    I can nod along to this video and it reinforces what I need in order to improve. If I saw it years ago when I painted to get things done (which I still do with marines, but not other armies), I don't think it'd get through to me.
    The only youtuber I've seen explain thinning paints correctly and consistently, is Duncan Rhodes. He repeats it in every single one of his videos because it is the single most important part of miniature painting: How to thin your paints properly and what it actually looks like. This is the big hill for most people to get over, to understand what they're doing.
    *Thinning your paints means that when you apply paint with your brush, it lays a flat layer of paint without being watery and without texture.*
    ( Lukes Aps (or whatever he's called now) scoffs at repeating information like that, because he doesn't understand that new people constantly come along and skimming through archives is a lot of work. He likes to play with his lighting and camerawork and so he prioritizes that. A lot of youtubers go through this process because it's two hobbies combined, having to sacrifice one for the other at times. )
    I still can't do it consistently, because different colors work differently. I paint with a ton of orange, I have emptied several pots over of Trollslayer Orange because of how much I've painted with it and it is the single worst covering pigment(s). You need to alter your brain to understand that the acrylic you're applying IS the paint, that the pigment is translucent but there's still a physical layer that you're putting on. When I paint with blues or greens, it's like magic to me, even yellow applies better than orange.
    In case it's not abundantly clear; DO NOT PAINT AN ARMY WITH THE MAIN COLOR BEING ORANGE. At least not without an airbrush.
    However, the advantage of coming from this hard school of knocks has allowed me to appreciate it so much better, even if I failed so much more.
    My advice to improve your painting is to do two squads of miniatures (around 20) where you try to learn the basics of paints and then you do a character where you pour yourself into trying your best, focusing and dedicating yourself to making something that should be beautiful, then trying to understand everything you failed at. You didn't fail because "I'm just not good at creative stuff", you failed because you don't know the techniques yet and now you need to ask the right questions like "How do I get a neat edge highlight" or "how do I transition between colors".
    You'll also see the difference between when you blob on paint and when you actually try.
    If I had these tutorials available over 20 years ago when I began, I'd be a master painter now that'd make Golden Demon award winners back then look like jokes. Because sharing techniques and information on how to paint has developed mindblowingly fast and far.
    When Zumikito is humble and says he's not a master, he means there are people who are better than him, but he doesn't look back at the literal billions of people who are worse.

      @@Smilomaniac & @Zumikito Miniatures. You are both right.
      And by the way.... if I understand it correctly.... the secret method that makes Orange colour match......... is simply using Yellow or White and Red colour AND THEN to know the difference when to add or subtract 1 of those colour over Orange. Like the normal Colour Theory says: Orange is just a mix of those 3 colours ~ Yellow, Red and White. The Colour Theory of Orange is fascinating. I hope I was helpful.

    • @Smilomaniac
      @Smilomaniac 3 роки тому +1

      @@youtubevideo2607 My point is just that orange just covers terribly.
      I've made it work by buying an airbrush, priming them black, a hefty zenithal of white, then coat yellow and finally orange on top. Then paint everything else on top of the orange by hand.
      As for shading it, you pre-shade with pink and/or post shade with brown. Since it's just marines, I don't need to do a ton of depth or play, but you could glaze bone colors to brighten it up the most naturally.
      For play, you can use red/yellow, but it'll look not quite right.

    • @domagojkrizic9572
      @domagojkrizic9572 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah definitely, also getting out of the mentality of painting just to finish an army definitely helps, even if it's not a hoard army.
      I suggest painting something that's not a part of an army from time to time (a cool bust, a display piece, a dnd mini etc.).
      Sitting down and focusing on one mini can bring much better results (and joy!) than constantly thinking how you need to paint another 50 same minis.

    I feel like my biggest problem right now as a beginner is not properly utilizing my time, I tend to spend too much time fiddling with things that don't really matter and so I just am not getting a firm enough grasp of the fundamentals that DO matter. I think the next thing I want to do is not exactly speed-paint, but set a goal of like 2 or 3 hours and try to do the best I can in that time frame.
    Can you recommend a list of steps to do for a mini that should be reasonable for that time? Just to sort of drill over and over so I get better at things like highlighting and contrasting without trying to mess around with glazes and blends.

    Agree big time with watching people do things (even looking at painting Magazines can help big time) as well as trying new types of models. I use oil paints alot now because of Marco and I just love them. Il paint fantasy things, sci fi and within that different types of characters or units (not just GW stuff, but like Titan Forge as well) I like bust painting and I feel like this helped me a hugely with learning how to blend better because of just bigger surfaces really. I paint Batman miniature game minis as well and within that range alone you have more realistic and more comic book types of minis as well depending where the character was taken from. 3D printing has helped alot with my painting just by getting models easily (put it on at night and boom! I have a bunch of new minis or a bust to paint that week) In one night of painting I totally ruined two models for batman miniature game I like ruined them, I was about to stop but then I decided to paint another one and it went on to be one of my best models I ever painted in that scale, I used the same techniques I did with the last two models and learned from my mistakes :-) so Id say learn from your mistakes is another great tip.

    Buy a copy of super dungeon explorers.
    Set a 30 to 60 min max timer for each model.
    Practice one technique per model.
    Using other techniques only when the one you are practicing simply cannot work.
    For practicing something like glazes pick a set of monsters and use the group. With the 6 or more models it allows for better dry time.
    Then give the box away as a gift or donate it as prize support.

I bought the bust he was painting and am going to paint it exactly the way he did it. Once I do it a couple of times, then I expand into my regular painting.

    I'm definitely not the best model painter, but at the moment I'm the best in my group. I find that when I paint armies I try somthing new every ten models. Seeing how they look in batches. Slowly the army gets better and better and usualy I end by doing the character models last

    Which brush do you use for precise edge highlights?
    Im mostly painting 28-30mm miniatures (DnD).
    Do you think a Da vinci maestro series 35 "1" and "00" is enough to start with?

    • @Zumikito
      @Zumikito  2 роки тому

      If you are painting just that, I would say it is definitely enough. You will find yourself painting with "1" mostly since if you keep a nice tip, you can get anywhere while it hold enough paint inside. I get "00" for faces mostly. For edge highlights you need dry paint (don't add too much water) and you should be able to make them nice and precise!

    One thing has always perplexed me and what’s it tell me about my painting. to the naked eye my figs look good smooth blends etc. Then I take a picture and it looks horrible blotchy etc.
    I’m trying to decipher what I’m doing wrong.

    • @al424242
      @al424242 2 роки тому

      Same here, my lovely layers look flat on camera, it's harder to fool a camera where it's zoomed in more than the naked eye can see. Also lighting and contrast differences don't help. I'd work more on layering and glazing and looking at what settings the camera has.

  • @Capamaru78
    @Capamaru78 3 роки тому

    The most important reason was the last one. Most people can get better looking minis just by upping their contrast on them.
