This old lady has never heard David Bowie....EVER! So we listen to David Bowie's Heroes and Space Oddity back to back. She said that in her generation they listened to bands like the Turtles. ok, I have never heard them either.
The reason why I wanted her to hear David Bowie is because she is in love with Johnny Depp and I wanted to show her his band doing a cover of Bowie. But, something told me to show her Bowie first before showing her Hollywood Vampires.
So, we had a blast with this. I love introducing old people to music. Even though it is old to some of us, it is brand new to her! What a concept!

Listen to the lady, she knows a thing or two. See, she got the reference to ”2001: A Space Odyssey”. This is a smart and very nice lady, you should show her more Bowie songs because she'll get them. Not everyone gets Bowie.
Yea, I used to listen to the 2001 Space Odyssey sound track. But it had nothing to do with this song. It was orchestra music. I was thinking that the entire space race is what inspired Bowie, not the movie. But she is awesome for even thinking about that. She lived through all of that. I was fairly young in 1969.
@@oldguyreactions Well, you are right, the music theme from ”Space Odyssey” did not influence this song, but Bowie was a huge Stanley Kubrick fan and this movie from 1968 nfluenced his artistic vision in general. The ending of the movie and that of the song are a bit similar too, as neither of the two heroes comes back to Earth and they both go through an unusual mental experience expressed in the movie by images and in the song by the crazy instrumental part at the end (you don't really hear that in the live version, I agree). By the way, Bowie's song was released slighly before the moon landing and became a hit in the context of the moon landing.

David Bowie was many things but never something as common as weird! He was a master. Pure genius. The world will never see his like again because this special spark of never seen before magic was created and completed by Bowie! No one can touch him.

Maybe with three clips per video, instead of two. And try it with Bowie classics like "Life On Mars", "Ziggy Stardust", "Suffragette City", "Rock'n Roll Suicide", "Rebel Rebel", "The Jean Genie", "Ashes To Ashes", "Station To Station", etc. ...I think it would blow her mind... Bowie was ground breaking,,I'm 62,,got my first Bowie album, Hunky Dory for my 10th birthday, and still listen to this genius today. I'm also fortunate enough to have seen him live. She’s right. He saw the movie and got inspired. He wrote this during the space race years and it was used in London for the lunar landing. He was considered a one hit wonder because he released several albums that didn’t chart, even The Man who sold the World that Nirvana famously covered. Then along came albums Hunky Dory and the Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and he’d “made” it. She might have heard China Girl, Let’s Dance, or Modern Love because he became an international pop star in the 80s with those hits, right up there with Michael Jackson! Madonna and Lady Gaga were greatly influenced by him as were tons of other artists. He inspired new wave and glam rock and so much more. Labyrinth movie with teenage Jennifer Connelly and the muppets in the 80s was also a big hit and he has been in many movies including Zoolander and the Prestige.
As far as looks, he has had soooo many different styles throughout the years.

Not one brown eye🤨 one eye was damaged as a school boy so that it remained permanently dilated meaning you can only see the outer Iris, where the mixed colours vary in hue in different atmospheres, as well as age. These colour variations happen to many blue/green eyed people, just that we see it in both eyes

Old Lady was spot on with her connection between 2001: A Space Odyssey and Space Oddity , , Old Man was very slow on the uptake.
In about 25 years when we can be there in perfect VR in our minds. This concert will I bet bet be #2 or # in the top sellers. #1 is going to be Queen at Wembly Stadium Live Aid, and this is the close #2 or #3. I would LOVE to have been there!!! AWESOME!

He helped children and gave them joy and prosperity, Hollywood children like Macaulay Culkin who would have otherwise been molested and tons of children who would have been in absolute poverty, or were facing cancer. This was written in a hoterl room in Berlin overlooking the wall , he was watching his producer Tony Visconti kissing his wife/girlfriend leaning against the wall , simple great great song . Space Oddity had Rick Wakeman of Yes fame on keyboards and special effects , Bowie was forever grateful he was.
Some of the biggest artists with the longest careers have a special skill of reinventing themselves. Bowie was probably the first, he created numerous characters and really embodied them on stage. His outlandish creations served him well and gained him a lot of attention, especially among a young audience who are always looking to rebel and experience something new. Just look at the artists who did the same and continued to reinvent themselves depending on the art they were creating - Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Marilyn Manson, Cher, to name a few. Most of them would probably name Bowie as an inspiration simply because he was such a creative spirit who let his art lead him.
When he died immediately after the release of his last album everyone realized that he spent his last year creating that work. That's how much of an genuine artist he was. Even in his last days he was thinking about leaving more art behind and using what little energy he had left to complete it.
Not sure if you've heard Brandi Carlile's combination cover of Space Oddity and Radiohead's Creep, but if not, you should check it out. Really incredible and makes much more musical sense than it seems like it will.

He probably knows the Turtles but he knows them as Flo and Eddie who also played with Frank Zappa. I love Bowie but what I love about him most is that he kept reinventing himself with every album. You never knew what you were going to get but you knew it would be great. This era of rock was known as Glam Rock and performers wore makeup, nail polish, high heeled shoes, long hair, dyed hair, men in clothes that could have been women's clothes or ballet type body suits and lead singers were often appearing androgynous, we had no idea what anyone's sexual preferences were but we all tried to guess. Bowie was not alone in this attire. Certainly Freddie Mercury also dressed strangely even wearing ballet flats and other times high heeled boots or shoes, makeup, black nail polish. It was an interesting time in music. Elton John wore a lot of glitter. Rock had become spectacular.

Yes, 1969. In fact it was released the week before the Moon landing and was initially banned by the USA and also BBC. To avoid negative speculation while Apollo 9 was actually attempting to land on the Moon.

Fun! She'd probably remember Marianne Faithfull (who did the song "As Tears Go By"). This same episode of _Midnight_ _Special_ included a duet with Bowie and Marianne singing "I Got You Babe" - probably the most bizarre rendition ever. Because I saw a spark in your mom's eyes when she read the name of the show, I suspect she was plugged into the music scene in 1973 when this aired (though maybe not this episode). When I insisted my sisters view that segment when it aired on repeat, they freaked out and wouldn't come back into the room. I'm wondering how a lady from Venus would take it today. Bowie wasn't the first to wear makeup, but he definitely started the "Glam" trend (though he quickly moved on to other characters). BTW, The Turtles were great, too.
What makes this the best recorded version of this song is tge drumming. I think its Ansley Dunbar. Not sure. I was 13 when this came out on the Midnight Special. Awesome show. Those were the days...
The woman is a lot more savvy than the guy here. He's a little slow on the uptake. Bowie himself said that 2001: A Spacey Odyssey was his inspiration for the song. It was just good timing that his song was released not long before the moon landing and was used by the BBC as a sort of soundtrack for the event. I went for many years assuming it was about the moon landing until I finally looked it up.
