  • Showing further progress from the April 22 video, we complete the final assembly of the intake and accessories of the J47 turbojet. This engine will be installed in a North American F86-F Sabre, and flown in airshows throughout the USA.

    You have a dream job...
    I'm in college studying aerospace engineering, and getting ready for finals.
    Your videos are my study breaks.
    Thanks for sharing your experience with these incredible machines!

    Great to see someone keeping these classic engines going. It's interesting that early turbojets had the accessory drive in the nose. I would think that would affect engine performance - a narrower compressor inlet and presumably ram compression from the bulbous nose cone. By the next gen J79 GE moved the accessories to the bottom of the engine.

    @1metiz Checklists and build sheets are common with engines, both industrial and aerospace. This engine is no longer supported by GE, so there are noo manuals or paperwork available. I was able to obtain the overhaul manual from Eflightmanuals, and we are using that as a reference.
    Blindfolded? I couldn't even pour a glass of milk blindfolded...

    If that's not the coolest engineering job (rebuilding jet engines) then I cannot think of what is!

    I like to use a speed handle for the V-Bands, you can snug it pretty quickly while keeping positive pressure on the generator.

    @LarryCanFly This engine is designed to run at 8000 rpm, and the auxiliary drive, which is what our speed pickup is mounted to, turn at a ratio of 9:20, or 45% of engine speed.

    Good question. I ask it a lot. The oil lines are critical, and so are fuel lines. Yet they have no locking or safety mechanism on their couplings. Why ?
    Answer is: I don't know.
    It makes you extra careful knowing that.

    • @AgentJayZ
      @AgentJayZ  10 років тому +1

      Yes. A company called Eeflightmanuals dot com is where we obtained a collectors edition of the US Air Force Training manual about the J-47.
      They have a lot of listings... have fun!

  • @1metiz
    @1metiz 13 років тому

    Do you still need to check the manual before each step or have you put so many of these engines together that you can do it blindfolded?
    Do you you have some sort of checklist fo each and every part/ action to make sure you don't forget anything?
    Great vids, very informative!

    This jet engine looks badly engineered to me, or perhaps I should say primitve, i.e. early stages of development. Very complicated and too many hoses and things. Advances in experience and knowhow make for less parts.

    • @AgentJayZ
      @AgentJayZ  4 роки тому

      This is an early model in the history of jet engines. It probably contains one tenth as many parts as a modern turbofan on any large airliner.
