The Art Of Lego Box Collecting

- The pain of wanting your sets to be "complete", lord knows I've spent so much money on getting boxed sets that i dread to think how much lego i would have if i just bought them all loose.
I do still have some unboxed from when i was a kid but im that much of a gremlin that im working backwards to buy them again but with the box this time.
Thanks for watching fellas!
Fun fact, if you open these push-to-open sets with a brick separator you can save the box from getting those big holes!
This is actually really helpful, maybe i can finally stop opening boxes like a barbarian too :O
Yes, it's a common sense , I actually prefer to open mine with a knife, and I taught my 6yo kid not to thumb-open them, but he insists to use a brick separator because he saw it on youtube. So sometimes we fight who will open the box. He never lets me to build the set though, so I can only have sloppy seconds. Anyway, all the boxes are carefully stored, my wife is mad with me but what the hell.
Hairdryer helps re-melt the glue
To help with my chronic fear of moths, my partner told me that moths are just "night-time butterflies" and now I'm scared of both
I’ve genuinely never understood why people dislike moths, I’ve always thought they were the exact same thing as butterflies and found them kind of pretty
@@Amos-M moth’s are annoying because they eat clothes

I didn’t know that buying just the empty boxes were a thing… now I do!… thank you for the enlightening info. 🎉
Its crazy, sometimes you find people selling empty boxes not knowing the true value they hold 😅
instruction booklets too
More like; "thank you for the new business venture opportunity" 😂
Paying extra for the box and instructions is totally worth it.
Thats what i keep telling myself too as i spend an extra £100 🤣
I find it hard enough to pay the prices for vintage sets without the boxes already! Nice video, very cool to see and like your style with the minifigure narration
I cheered during your condemnation of those who flatten their Lego boxes. Keep fighting the good fight against those 2D malefactors!
I am glad that Lego Collectors and Train Collectors have the same insanity. I like the train pieces with the boxes and inner supports. Pristine boxes are nice but a slightly rocked one is also ok. I store the boxes inside plastic boxes. I do like to have the shipping boxes as well for my train pieces. Seems to be a no no at the Lego store though. They brought the castle out in a brown box and proceeded to not let me have the brown box. As they were taking it away I mused that the outer carton fit the Lego box perfectly and as I paid $400.00 plus tax for it I would like to keep the brown box. No dice🫤. I really like your way of seeing things so for all that is holy, please keep on making these videos. PS, my wife does not understand or appreciate the wisdom of my train collecting.😜
I keep all my boxes, but flatten them.
As Just_A_Duck said earlier in the comments, if you open them along the glue with a brick separator or blunt knife they are left completely intact, and I COULD glue them back together if I really wanted.
But it has to be done though, my Brickset count says I have 4008 sets… my loft isn’t big enough for all of those!!
I thought about flatten them, too. I can't see why they should look like crap when it is done right.
@@noxious8 exactly. I have hundreds of them, all flattened and they look fine. They only look bad, if you use the punched out semi-circles that Lego put on the back!!
Box collecting is something that I will most likely never get into, but I do respect the people that go out of their way to also get the box
God i envy people who dont collect the boxes 🤣
I tend to put smaller ones in bigger ones if they will fit. Those trays were awesome. Built the original Snowspeeder on a road trip because of the cardboard tray.
For me the Lego box is essential for me to store Lego parts or transport sets. Plus potential storage, everything has a purpose when it's found.
Don't knock opening boxes from the back until you try building a new set out of a box opened that way, it makes a nice bin to help keep from loosing pieces. I even use the less collectable boxes like battle packs as storage since they are all similar sizes and they stack nicely. Also I would like to point out that this only works with smaller sets I wouldn't do that to a large set im not a monster just chaotic neutral hahaha.
I dont think i could bring myself to try it, maybe i'll buy a double and give it a go 😅
I get it. something about having the box especially the vintage sets. I would keep all my newer boxes if I could. I am an instructions man. I think I have the Manual for every set I have ever owned...
I flatten mine too, but most of them were tape sealed so it's not even a big deal. I have well over 100 sets, so storing empty boxes would be insane if I didn't flatten them and store them
When i was a kid a cut out the front and back of the box, punched holes in it with a perforater and put them in a folder.
Now i am waiting for time machines to be real...
My god....that's actually going to haunt me tonight 😂
With some older sets sometimes the box is more beautiful than the basic bricks inside. I don't agree with what you said at 1:31, because I like to open mine from the back, the main reason is I have very limited space to store hundreds of boxes (which of course would be a crime to throw away), and like this I can store smaller ones in the bigger ones, and really maximise the usage, but if I opened them from the side it would be much harder.
Not a bad idea to be honest especially if your strapped for space, i do put some of my smaller ones inside the bigger boxes and it can be a hassle at time :)
I used to LOVE collecting and having on display a massive collection of lego set boxes behind my shelf from eight to thirteen but my dad to save space flattened them all and threw out a bunch without my permission so now it's been a slow process
Damn i dont know what i would do if something happened to my boxes 😮
I too am a Lego box collector. I have mostly held onto all of my Lego boxes, and I store them all in a dark closet , the attic is probably one of the worst places in my opinion to store lego boxes, unless you have them packed safely of course.
It's either the attic or I need to buy a second house at this point 😂 I'm nervous about putting them up there but my wife's parents straight up tossed two vintage sealed pirate sets in theirs and they're still doing fine 👀
@@RobrickLegoYour wife's parents collect vintage LEGO--glad to see someone out there has their priorities straight.
Thank you for this. The tone and video hit me deep.
Ah, a fellow cardboard connoisseur.
In my years of buying not just lego but other random stuff I've always kept the boxes. Not once have I went back to check on an old box or something. I don't even know why someone would want to do that
0:07 Wooooow! Kay-Bee toys sticker. Guessing you bought this from the US. That was my toy store...before Toys 'R' Us took over, which in turn got stomped out by Amazon, which in turn got stomped out when the Vogon Fleet bulldozed Earth. Oh, wait that hasn't happened yet.
I did have to get that one from the US! Thanks for the little bit of lore, i have quite a few with price tags still on them but never really gave it much thought till this comment haha.
Great vid Robrick, very interesting.
When I was a kid I kept all of my lego boxes which is funny because I clearly didn't care about resale value, I chewed on or sharpied on all the pieces, but I dutifully saved all the boxes. I guess I was just emulating what I saw others doing online without understanding the why.
Good to see I'm not the only crazy person out there who keeps all the boxes :) I also mostly buy second hand, so a box is a big plus but not mandatory on all the sets. Thanks for the funny vid
i only ever keep boxes of sets that are older and from my favourite theme/subtheme. It felt like a crime crushing the UCS slave I box, but it was that or the AT-DP, and no way am I harming any Rebels box
You know what, i respect your willingness to share the crimes against lego that you have committed 😂
I wish I kept my Amazon Ancient Ruins box with the flaps so bad. I still have my Rock Raiders HQ one, it’s stomped to shit and missing the flaps.
2:53 hahahaha seek help *now* !
I hate the thumb-to-open ones; they're really hard to open cleanly with e.g. a cutter knife (the glue is very sturdy). Thankfully, about half or more of the City sets nowadays still come with the clear, round stickers. Cutting those open is surprisingly pleasant XD
Same exact obsession man I was devastated when my girlfriend and dad suggested I collapse my boxes down when we moved and even moreso when the closet I put some of them into ended up having moisture issues! Whole bunch of them ended up stuck together. Need to get myself some plastic bins to store them in for long term. Is it weird that I even keep the plastic bags the pieces come in whenever I can? Great videos man I've watched them all and can't wait to see your channel grow
I am known for keeping the plastic bags too! When i moved house last year my family told me to just chuck it all into a van and call it a day and i was mortified. Ended up spending 3 hours driving back and forth filling my wifes car with lego because i refused to stack them :D
I'm not a box collector, but if I can get a box, I'll take it! Most of my collection is stored in small bins by theme. The rest are in the original boxes. I try to fit more than one set per box, if they can fit.
Consider this.
Card stock and printer
If if wasn't made by Mr. Lego himself I don't wand it
I fold my boxes, I just don't have the space to keep them but like to keep them
Its a great middle ground between throwing them in the recycling and keeping them :)
If we weren't separated by an ocean, I'd happily pass on my cardboard trash. I kind of hate throwing them away but I also need the space. A couple years ago, I found someone selling all their ex-husbands Lego sets on facebook. They were all from the 90s/early2000s (adventurers, western, city.. the good stuff) and the guy had not only kept the boxes, but apparently he had a stove heating method of opening the boxes by separating the glued flaps without ripping anything. So I got about 20 sets in pristine condition with boxes (also in pristine condition) for $40.
I should add, I didn't throw those ones away. I sold them to a local used lego store
Holy jesus im jealous!
I just got back into lego after i sold all my lego when i was 16-18... I'm 33 now. Just bought some packs. An you can guess I threw all the boxes away. Now I'm feeling kinda stupid😭
You monster! 😠
That was a very funny narrative of your box collection, I’m a hoarder and have collected for a couple of years, being a grandma I put all extra pieces in ziplock and store direction in a notebook, then I stack the empty boxes on a shelf. I’ll sub to your channel and see what kind of journey you take us on!
Flat packers for lyfe
😡
I’m 46 and my mum cut the edges of all boxes, so I only have the front and back panels of all my childhood sets
Jesus christ...
I don't understand how flat-packing ruins the box. It's the only way I can keep the thousand plus boxes I have.
Help! What am I missing?
I find some of them just don't quite get back to their proper shape after being flat packed, not that you would ever need too 😂
i just need a recyclable paper bag with my sets :)
My takeaway from this masterpiece of a video is, where did you get such a beautiful wallet?
It was a Christmas present from my in-laws 😅
I burn my boxes
What a chad!
Just did this last week with my Space Police 3 Galactic Enforcer box. What can I say, sometimes you need a bonfire the night after recycling gets picked up.
1:37 might’ve done that. But that’s because I didn’t have a good place to build the lego, so I used the inside of the box. And before you ask yes I am a diagnosed psychopath
You monster! 😲
@@RobrickLego haven’t done it in a few years however, so I’m pretty sober from this bad habit
I’m one of those barbarians who threw away boxes. I just can’t see any value on it. And besides, I’m not planning to sell my collection.
😡
You want my creator f40 Box that’s survived an f4 tornado ?
did it actually survive a tornado? :O
Boxes are good for the environment because there are cardboard and not plastic like the bricks
Does that justify it?
Im using that one 🤣
Those black background boxes are such a terrible waste. Why did they get rid of the great thematic background art?
True! I have to admit it makes them look "classy" but nothing beats a nice background

csgo? don't tell me you also collect skins, your wife wouldn't be able to handle it
Luckily no, i was a bit of a fiend with league of legends skins but now i only collect physical stuff 😅
Since around 2010 I've held onto every box. But my wife flat packed all of them when we moved house in 2015. The only boxes that avoided the attack were the two vintage boxes, black knights fortress and black sea barracuda because they were in the cupboard and not the attic.
Oh the black sea barracuda is an absolute gem!
