    Thanks for this. Your video reminded me that about 8 months ago I looked into replacing our 14 year old hard wired smoke alarms. Just ordered a new pair.

      Glad it helped, they are easy to overlook, the one I changed last had not been working for a 6 months, I forgot about that one until the other one went wrong, Thanks Clive for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

    If you have one of the alarms that has the AC power option, the LED light should stay on, and will blink when it goes to backup battery power (this is how you know if those models are running on AC power or battery power). It won't chirp in this mode unless the battery is dead or near dead, but if you notice it is not solid lit and you have one of the AC powered ones, then there is something wrong with the AC power supply. I suppose the battery powered ones (as you've shown) blink to let you know it's on battery and the battery is good.

    It's safer to replace it. All smoke alarms made from 2008 onwards have a 8-10 year lifespan. This is because the components become less responsive and slowly die away

    You hear the alarm, and you get out to fresh air. By all means, take the alarm with you in case it's out of charge, dysfunctional or out of service. But first of all, get out, just in case it's working properly!

  • @Wahinies

    What I am getting from this is that using combination carbon monoxide and smoke detectors is a bad idea because if one sensor goes bad the whole thing is kaput. Also the AC power models are pointless because they still chirp with low backup batteries. I hate the kidde detectors in the rental house we are in right now.

    • @aaanton11
      @aaanton11  3 роки тому

      You might be right . Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

    • @HR-wd6cw
      @HR-wd6cw 9 місяців тому

      Yes but you want them to chirp because many of the AC powered ones have sealed batteries. This is a safety feature in case the power goes out. Of course you should just check them regularly. They will chirp when the battery is dying, but you can silence it for up to 24 hours (I think there is a sequence you can use) and I believe you can do this a few times, but it's by design (to be annoying) so you change it. IMO the AC powered ones are not any better than the battery powered ones, except you don't have to change batteries, but they don't work any better.

      I did find a 1996 First Alert carbon monoxide alarm on eBay yesterday which was in an open box for $21.20 USD including shipping. Actually, the alarm appeared to be new. Before installing the First Alert CO alarm, I'll test it out by placing an open glass of wine alongside it. If the alarm responds to the wine vapors, then it should be good to go. Actually, even smoking incense might be another good test. I mean, I'll be darn if Big Brother tells me what I should or should not buy. In other words, the bureaucrats should kindly allow the consumer decide what's good for him or her.
