I'm slowly learning how to use Shorter Christian Prayer and recently discovered an easy way to figure out what psalter week I'm supposed to be in: Most church bulletins list what week of Ordinary Time we are in. Once you find that out, turn to the section starting on page 503, and you will see the corresponding psalter week listed right below it.
I enjoy using this book and use it along with the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I don't worry about whether I have the right week or not, at least until the special seasons of Advent or Lent.
I have one coming in a couple of days from now. I'm looking forward to incorporating this abbreviated liturgy of the hours in my prayer life. Yep, me, too. I love the Catholic Book Publishing Company. Their books are always of the best quality.

Yes, and it gives courage to those who look at the 4 volumes and cringe/slink away (me! I’ve had the 4 volumes for about 20 years and could never figure them out)
I admit I'm among those who scorned and looked down on this book, but you made a compelling case for it. Anybody adopting a prayer rule, using whatever source, deserves credit for going against the grain of our culture. I was surprised but glad to hear you mention this book contains all 150 Psalms. I know the full LoH is missing several Psalms and portions of many others. That is a definite plus of this volume. On the minus side--for me--is its modernized translation of the Magnificat (I love the traditional translation that has "magnifies" instead of "proclaims the greatness" of the Lord). The lengthy Hymns section is also a detriment as I know I won't read (and definitely not sing!) the hymns in here. I routinely skip the Hymn as well (glad I'm not the only one! 🙂). Good, thorough review that did elevate my view of this book and of those who are blessed by using it. Thank you!
@@ConvincedCatholicism Thanks for the update! I was wondering after the video if the Church changed its mind on those missing Psalms (58, 83, and 109, plus portions of 20 others). That would have been a huge but welcome change. I actually now prefer to use a breviary called Divine Worship: Daily Office (Commonwealth Edition) created for Anglicans in communion with the Catholic Church (the Personal Ordinariates that Pope Benedict XVI created). That breviary has all 150 and is read through on a 30-day cycle. Reading all of God's Word--even the curses and distressing portions--is important and I believe our duty as Christians. Thank you again for the update and for your awesome channel!
Good conversation here. I would encourage both of you to consider delving into making hymns a part of your office. It is truly the proper place for hymnady in the Latin Rite and we have such a rich tradition of them. Praying or singing the Psalms and canticles is a life-changing practice, but why sell yourself short of singing the songs of centuries of Christians throughout our history. There is much Gold that has been forgotten. Just my 2 cents

Could you answer a question I have? Why do prayer books never include the full text of Our Father? I understand it should be memorized since it's the most universal, but WHAT IF someone doesn't remember it and doesn't have access to it? Shouldn't a prayer book be self contained?
That what if is a huge what if. The way the Our Father is prayed at every mass, taught in every Christian home and is quoted from Jesus’ own lips as the way we should pray I would find it highly implausible that someone, even a convert from a non-Christian nation, didn’t have “access” or the ability to memorize it. Even if they didn’t know it, it is one google search or Sunday mass away
Unfortunately the book does not go that far. However, you may want to check out divineoffice.org. It will tell you which week of the psalter you should be in.
you pray all 150 psalms in the shorter Christian prayer? I feel like in the normal Liturgy of the hours single volume your not praying all the psalms. It's a select few psalms or their abbreviated. I started praying about 7 months ago on and off. Sometimes I would skip a few weeks and have to reset my ribbons. Which was fine for me because that actually helped me learn how to keep up and where to find it. The easiest way is to know what Sunday were on and then set the rest of the ribbons according to where the Sunday says your suppose to be in the psalter. Then find the appropriate day. I've been able to do it with out using the little guide book or downloading the papers every month doing it that way. Plus knowing what month were in is also important because that shows you how many Sunday's were into the year. I used sticky tabs on mine like you would with bible tabs. I got the ones at Walmart that you write in. I put one on every section so I don't need as many ribbons I put one on the proper of seasons and even marked the date when that starts. I marked the first week of ordinary time and the 7th week of ordinary time. Then I put a tab on ordinary where they tell you to place a ribbon so when we do psalms 95 I just flip right to it with the tab. I placed one on the four week psalter so when we start at the beginning I just flip to that tab. Next I placed one on the daytime, the complementary psalmody and night prayers and the antiphon of Mary. I placed one on each office of the commons as well. I also placed one on the start of the hymns so I can flip to that quickly. I only have 3 ribbons in my usual Christian prayer book I have one ribbon in the proper of seasons, one in the psalter, and the other in the feast day's through out the year. Since I use the tabs if it says office of virgins I just flip to that tab. It takes a few seconds that way and I have less ribbons to manage. I'm not catholic but when the Vergin Mary appeared to me after I asked God how the first Christians prayed. She came in a dream that was so real and vivid I couldn't distinguish between the dream and reality. I had to ask my husband if it happened and he said that he had no knowledge of it. I was turned onto a video after she shared that they prayed to her and Jesus. I didn't know of any prayer books that referred to her and Jesus. Then a video randomly popped up on my feed about nuns praying and I was like what's that book. Because I knew that the virgin told me about praying the hours. I was praying the rosary at the time during this. Then I found out it was called the liturgy of the hours. I have been praying it ever since. I would say it has helped me spiritually. I've done all the hours and then I've also done the little hours where its just morning evening and the night prayer before bed. It's helped me sleep and be less stressed. I pray this and sometimes when I can I pray a decade after the office hour of the rosary.
Hi , Im new to using the liturgy of hours , what book should i buy Daytime Prayer liturgy of hours Or Shorter Christian Prayer book ? I know the Daytime edition has midmorning, midday and mid-afternoon and thats when i spend most of my time praying , any advice much appreciated. Thanks
Hi I hope you enjoy your journey in praying the Liturgy of the hours. My recommendation is to either get the Daytime Prayer book or Christian Prayer. You don’t have to stick to the times 100%. Most Catholics pray morning and evening prayer.

"Cutting out" and "unfit" are the wrong words to use for this. The reason is given for the omission of certain verses and a few of the psalms in the LOTH itself. The readings chosen for Mass often also have omissions. They are not denying that it is scripture as they have not removed it from the bible; and neither have they told anyone not to read it. Anyone is free to pray the omitted psalms or verses privately. It is simply that they are not required to fulfill the obligation of the office. The bishops have the right to decide what prayers are required and not required of their priests. Since there are always things that can be omitted or included, the approved liturgy of the hours is complete and so was the older one for its time. However, for those who prefer doing the omitted psalms as part of the office, the Ordinariate Catholic office includes them as optional.
@@vivacristorey4363 The reasons state what exactly? That people nowadays may have some psychological difficulties with said passages: thus, "unfitting" for modern men. A reason I find to be untenable.
Thank you for the recommendation from the other video! One question. I noticed in the book that it tells you where to start all the way up until 2024. After 2024 does it reset back to the 2013 start, if that makes sense?
Perhaps but keep in mind the Little Office of Baltimore and the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary came out before VII. Shorter Christian Prayer still has the vast majority of psalms
VII heavily promotes the liturgy of the hours to be prayed by lay people. So yes, abridged versions act as either an introduction or a long term way of participating in the prayers of the Church. It is great that Vatican II asked for this.

I have met people who don’t care about the week either. They are more focused on forming a habit.

As a child of Vatican 2 (b. 1964), I find the modernistic artwork to be comforting and complementary to the Church’s newer outreach.

It's a lovely little book, but I can't use it very much because it has no memorial or feast days, only 12 solemnities.

Doesn't the LOTH cut out some parts of the Psalms deemed to be "unfitting" for modern men? So by design it is incomplete?

this is an old edition. It will give you a continuation for future dates in the newer editions
