I found the first half of Huntdown to be fairly easy for a “retro shooter” but it does ramp up in the second half.

The audio design in this game is insane! It sounds so good!
Two absolute bangers hitting on the same day - Jet Lancer is an ultra polished evolution of the arcade fun Luftrausers first provided that feels like its in the same pseudo-Nintendo tier of quality as Wargroove and Huntdown manages to encapsulate all the best aspects of 16-bit art as memory paints it and action arcade shooters in one hell of a solid, approachable package. Damn fine day for arcade gaming, this.

Cyberpunk & Elevator Action 2 & Blackthrone = The awesome Huntdown
ITS LIKE METAL SLUG!!! WE LOVE IT
Pretty on spot review overall. While featured in the video-footage, it should be noted that this game offers well-thought-out core-mechanics as well as polished stage-designs, filled by a surprising variety of enemy- and boss-types, set in kitschy yet inspired scenarios. The pretty cool atmosphere in music, graphics and details is also worth mentioning.
Back into a future that never was and never will be! Or is it? :)
1min30s in, I thought "wow, this looks like a cool mix of Bio Menace and Black Thorne" .. how cool was Black Thorne with that cover mechanic and its shotgun? and the levels look a lot like in Bio Menace, architecture wise. Also the intro with the two cars standing there and the high-rise to the left? like the start scene in Bio Menace. Also a bit of Duke 1+2 in there. But then you said .. 2 player local co-op. How cool is that, Escape from New York the game with a friend? On my new OLED 65"? SOLD! Also cool that it doesn't seem to be too hard, so a casual friend who visits and doesn't play regularly can join and we can enjoy the retro vibes.
Btw, today I bought VALFARIS on Steam for -45% off, had an eye on it since your review. Didn't play it yet (started a new XCOM 2 WOTC playthrough, oh boy).

I`ve discovered yesterday on the first stage there are a secret location where Snake from Escape from New York appears and give you an Uzi, awesome game.

I have a physical copy and still never opened the pin set. It's really hardcore, and this game is balls to the wall. Perfect for true 80s film fans.
I absolutely love this game. Just finished it. My only gripe is the song variety. Instead of each section having 1 or two tunes I would have liked something unique for every level.
What system did you play on and what was the price point?

As a big John Carpenter fan, this looks like a game I should try. You say it takes just 2-4 hours to finish though? That's strikes me as inordinately short.
I'd be buying it on the playstation store as well, which means it's not particularly cheap. Is it worth it for 2-4 hours?

Every review say that the game is a little too short. What does it means ? 5 hours to finish it or less ? Anyway, thx for your review !
He said 2-4 hours. Pretty damn short for me. That with the fact it looks boring other than some boss fights and a basic level design has me saying no at $20. Maybe when it goes on sale for $10-13 or lower I'll bite. Seems a bit pricey rn for the time it takes to play it with probably no replay value other than trophies. Ion Fury or Maneater look much more interesting imo and are out soon within this and next week.
@@MajorChipHazard316 While I'd personally say that Huntdown is quite replayable in an arcade sense, I understand that that's not necessarily everyone's idea of fun.
I can definitely vouch for Ion Fury by the way. Not sure how it's gonna play on console, but the PC version is utterly fantastic.
Contra and castlevania can be beat easily within 20 mins. Does that make them bad games?
@@bugaj187 Most people today want these big epic AAA type games with a long story mode and mind blowing graphics and let's not forget a endless multiplayer mode. If a game comes out today that doesn't have all that, majority of people don't want it. Gamers today are super spoiled with these AAA high budget games.
Huntdown is $20 and if you are into the retro 1980s dystopian future genre and also like old school arcade style games. I think you'll love Huntdown as much as I do. Hell, it's worth the $20.

You unlock cheat mode at 100% completion. Giving you access to unlimited health, invincibility and a mode without a hud

it's the sort of game I want but I'll wait for a sale.. not going to pay 30 AUD for a 2 hour game.
I agree with everything except the whole “similar bosses” opinion. If you play through the game you’ll realize that all the bosses are different in their own ways and require different strategies to fight them. Keeps you thinking on your toes.
Different, yes. Similar, yes. Many require the same tactic of just avoiding them running straight at you.

Yep - waited two years with this on my Steam wishlist. Two weeks or so before release, they went Epic Virtual Console exclusive. Pretty damn shady, if you ask me. Whatever, guess I will wait for it to come out on PC.
