Perfect pitch is uncommon for sure. Kevin Olusula from Pentatonix is the only one in the group with perfect Pitch.

Perfect pitch isn’t super common, but it’s not incredibly rare either. Studies have shown that most children that are exposed to a decent amount of music training before the age of 6 will develop perfect pitch(it’s also more common in people who speak tonal-based languages like Mandarin or Cantonese, which makes sense considering music is simply different tones put in different orders). Children(especially babies)are incredibly good at picking up languages, and music is no different. I believe there was even one study that showed that pretty much every newborn has it,but if it’s not developed it goes away(basically a use it or lose it skill). Adults also can’t develop perfect pitch(there are programs that claim that you can,and they are lying in order in order to take your money).
The reason Charlie seemed to get embarrassed about it is because Perfect Pitch isn’t incredibly useful to musicians. It’s obviously helpful(although it can actually be a hindrance, one of my music teachers said that students with perfect pitch often had difficulty transposing [changing the key of] pieces because they couldn’t “unhear” the original in their head),but Relative Pitch is what matters, which Charlie obviously has. Put simply,Relative Pitch is someone playing a note on a piano, telling you what the note is,and then you being able to name every note that comes afterwards in relation to that “fixed” note. Perfect Pitch is being able to name the first note.
Charlie was definitely right when he said it’s similar to other people seeing colors. When we see someone wearing a red shirt,we don’t even have to think about it to know that it’s red. We just know that it is. We never had to train ourselves to differentiate the colors,we could always tell the difference, and as soon as they were given names(learning the colors as a toddler)we instantly knew what they were. I imagine it’s pretty similar to the percentage of colorblind people vs standard vision. Only in this case,Charlie has perfect hearing and everyone else is tone-deaf. And just like colorblind people can learn to differentiate the colors by comparing the varying shades of grays that they see,tone-deaf people can develop a strong sense of Relative Pitch. Think of the videos of colorblind people sorting M&Ms into different colored groups. They don’t always get it right, but they can get it right about 95% of the time.
This is also why people with perfect pitch who have a music background tend to not advertise that they have perfect pitch(at least at first),because they didn’t really do anything to develop it. I have a friend with perfect pitch who gets pretty uncomfortable when people praise her for having it. She doesn’t mind accepting compliments for her playing, because she knows she worked incredibly hard to get proficient at the piano. But she says it would be like a colorblind person going on and on about how amazing it is that you can just look at something and instantly know what color it is. It’s just like,”Thanks?” Because you know that you didn’t have to have to put any effort to name it. You just can.
Just to clarify, this isn’t a knock on Charlie or his music. He’s an incredibly talented musician who has a really strong music background (apparently he took jazz piano and classical music at the Manhattan School of Music in high school, then went on to study at the Berklee School of Music with a full scholarship). His success in the industry is definitely due to that,as it should be. He’s obviously worked very hard to get to where he is. This is just to shed some light on what Perfect Pitch is,and how useful it actually is when making music.
I also really enjoyed the video! It’s always interesting(and somewhat amusing, not gonna lie)to see people who don’t have a music background react to people with perfect pitch😂

Charlie did studied jazz on the Manhattan School of Music, and that is reflected in his music. Not only some are pretty jazzy (I Won't Tell A Soul and Suffer are the most obvious), but sometimes he improvises jazz into his music, like his performance of Marvin Gaye at the Honda Stage on the Iheart Radio, with a jazzy breakdown

There's only 0.5%-1% of the human population that has this "perfect pitch disorder"

What he was trying to say with the colors in the beginning is that he recognizes pitch the way most people recognize color. If you see blue, you just know it's blue without having to compare it to another color. There's actually something called true pitch which you can learn and a lot of professional musicians have sort of a "specified perfect pitch" recognizing for example chords and notes on the instrument they're specialized in, because they know the tone and the sound of their instrument so well.

I suspect there are different levels of perfect pitch. Some people can hear a note and tell you what it is. Charlie Puth in my opinion, has the ultimate perfect pitch in that he can simply pull the note out of the air, or, if you will, out of his head.
