Charlie actually said that "Attention" and "How Long" are connected, meaning that he was cheated on (in Attention) and then he cheated as well (in How Long). I hope it makes more sense now. Loved the reaction btw
yea he did mention that in interview, and one another song in a sequence and thats how the relationship ended, not sure which was the other song though.

yess i heard that and in attention shes getting mad in the video throwing things and i assume that's when she find out because charlie says how long is the " conversation after everything has cooled down from the hotel scene in attention" i feel bad for charlie the girl getting mad at him making him be the bad guy when she did it first lollll defenitley toxi lol i mean cheating is wrong but the relationship already ended when she cheated so i guess charlie new lol love these songs

Also the reason he seems happy in the song is he cheated back on the girl he had a thing with and the girl would then ask him how long has this been going on. It’s a direct follow up from attention, in the voicenotes saga, attention-how long-done for me and patient is the correct order that tell a cohesive story. You need to listen to em all.
I remember the day this song came out and my first reaction to it like it was yesterday! I’d say this is one of his best vocal performances in a song and i love it!💫

Charlie explained on the Zach Sang Show that he got cheated on first, and the he went on and cheated as well before they broke up (within the same relationship, which obviously wasn't healthy at all)
He's singing it from the woman's perspective, what she said to him asking if everything was for show, how long had it been going on, saying he was being shady and she noticed it for a while. It is catchy isn't it?!

this is an elton/bernie product, and by that, i mean, bernie wrote lyrics for elton expecting the music to somewhat match the lyrics...only to end up with a complete dichotomy. i think i recall this being a song where he intended (lyrically and musically) for the end result to accomplish just that. just fyi.

It is her briskness that dictates the song's pace, rather than his shambling apology. The key is C-minor, which lends a melancholy, defeated quality to his vocal. I really enjoyed this track, and it's novel perspective.
