you also have the fuse compartment covered in fine dust. Mine has the same problem. Were you able to figure out where this dust came from? I do not.......
In my case the dust is from previous owner living in countryside so only gravel roads there. Gravel dust get's everywhere. Dust it self is a nasty bugger, considering that beneath the battery there should be drainage holes with rubber seals, dust can get in trough there. Also, keep in mind that taillight hole is next to fuses and the whole trunk is there. Area where fuses are located has more air flow, I don't remember but on both sides I believe under rear bumper there is ventilation vents to de-pressurize or what ever, that is also the place dust can get it. Even if all is sealed and no water is getting in, dust is a whole different ball game, it can collect over time from you opening and closing doors and just linger inside and settle there, because it's like a choke point. That is my theory at least, I'm not saying I'm correct, but that is what I think is happening.
