    Just to put a little perspective on this, in its history, the UK has never played another nations anthem at the gates of Buckingham palace outside of a state visit. The Queen personally authorized the guard to break protocol and play this to give the Americans trapped in London due to airport closure some comfort after 9/11. There is no greater gesture of solidarity we could give another nation. Our child was in pain, and we were here for you.

    I don't care what anyone says, as a Brit, I'm PROUD to call the U.S. our friends. Australia, Canada and NZ too. All great countries with shared values. Sure there's things wrong in our countries but there's a hell of a lot of things right. Love to all our friends in US, Canada, Australia and NZ.

    As I understand it, playing another country's anthem during Changing of the Guard was never done, but this was requested by Queen Elizabeth herself. Thank you to Her Majesty and the British people for standing by our side that unimaginably terrible day and the days that followed. The United States has no greater friend and ally than the United Kingdom.

    I'd say the Queen's Guard outdid themselves in their American salute and tribute. They kick off at 1:41 with JP Sousa's American military march "The Thunderer", then at 2:17 they switch to Stars And Stripes Forever, another John Philip Sousa military march, then around 3:02 they play the Star Spangled Banner. God bless the Queen.

I have a lot of respect for this country, but even more now. God bless the Queen and England. Thank you for showing your support. I only hope we can and will do as much in the future. rachel, it was spine chilling. I was there with my mother (her father and husband both WWII vets), my wife and 2 kids.It almost seemed fictional adding to that I had moved to Europe Oct 2000 flying on British airways and watching on that flight a fictional movie about a colonial revolutionary(the Patriot). haha. both were unreal experiences. I had a great great grandfather who was a general in the Revolutionary war.

    This was the day AFTER. that band had to learn these notes in a DAY and they played it so spectacularly. it's amazing to think about. for weeks they were practicing their music, not expecting much deviation, and then the order comes that the QUEEN HERSELF wants them to play the star spangled banner. they may know it, but they don't KNOW it. they spent a day and maybe a night practicing so it would be perfect and that is amazing

    I find it truly beautiful that the red coats that we Americans (blue coats) once feared and fought in the beginning of our country centuries later were the ones that played our songs (which were somewhat even meant to be rebelling against them once upon a time) in support of the US through their hard time. It's so amazing & I have no doubt America would return the favor if the UK ever has a hard time, if they have not done so already. I love how we all celebrate and mourn together in support :)

      Chris66able Neither war was really our problem, it was WW2 til we finally had a good reason to join in on the war. And if you're seriously fucking mad at the United States for not helping and always helping us, take a look at our track record, we help fix a third world country only for the next generation to hate us and devote their lives to killing us. Besides, the United States shouldn't be helping anyone, we've already done enough for the world, dead soldiers, extreme debt, and no matter what we do the world will always hate us.

    • @dneahusan1
      @dneahusan1 9 років тому +2

      Chris66able yes learn your history and political history during at around the turn of the century in the early 1900's the United states had a decent sized population boost of European immigrants coming to the states mostly of German and Italian heritage joining both world wars would not have been popular especially against Germany. That was the issue that both Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt faced they wanted to help but it would have been political suicide for them and the members of congress and the senate that passed a resolution for a war then something needed to happen for them to justify that. It still didn't prevent the US from helping the British in what way they can without going into an all out war if I remember right before we entered both wars Americans were sending supplies to the British to help in their war effort. We needed something to get the American people to support a reason to start sending troops in WW1 it was Germanys unrestricted submarine warfare sinking American ships off the British coast to bring us in. WW2 was different Germany didn't want us involved because of the the US's ability to manufacture goods of war faster than anyone in the world at that time but was dragged into declaring war against the US because their ally Japan invaded Pearl Harbor. But really it all boils down to politics the United States hasn't had a majority English population since the mid 1800s when the first big wave of immigrants came in which were Polish and Irish. Then just before WW1 we had another huge wave of immigrants mainly from Germany and Italy. How do you think an Irishman would feel in that era about helping the British in a war or even a German man feel about taking up arms against another German WW1 and 2 would not have been popular if the US got in it in the beginning it would have caused a huge political uprising if it did. Might have even put the US into a second civil war. Yes learn your history from the point of view in this scenario an American. Think of the political mentality of the united states in that era. Publically we may have said it wasn't our problem but we were still supplying the British from the start we just didn't send troops until later

Today at my high school in Prince William County, nothing was said at all. No mention of the events, even though at least two dozen people from my county were killed in the terrorist attacks. Even by the local government itself there is a bad taste I'm left with and a complete total disregard and disrespect towards those who perished.

      I'm the same way I was in high school myself when the attacks took place. But I actually live about 50 minutes away from the Pentagon. I was actually in 10th grade at this time going to my English 10 class and my English teacher also had it on the television the moment I walked into my classroom. But when we saw the Pentagon getting hit that's when some of the students in my high school who actually had parents who worked at the Pentagon get very worried about their mother or father who were inside that building at the time. I had a friend in my school whose dad worked in that very location of the Pentagon that was hit by that plane. It also came very very close to my friend's father's office where the airplane actually hit the Pentagon. But her father wasn't near his office when the plane hit the building so her dad was very lucky to have gotten out safe and sound. Two years later after the attacks I got to meet her dad since her dad came to pick us up from the prom when me, her friend, her herself, and her boyfriend at the time all went to our senior prom together and her dad picked us up from the dance and brought us to her house to change out of our clothes and then her dad dropped us off at our after prom party at the local Funland. Then early in the morning the next day her dad picked us up from the after prom party and then took all of us home.

      Wow, that's a little disrespectful, we changed an age old tradition to honour our ally in its time of suffering, and you come back with that? If that's how you feel, you probably should have kept quiet. We gave the USA pretty much the highest honour and mark of respect that exists in this country, and you're preoccupied with a war over 200 years ago? You're an ex US marine, you're supposed to have a thing called honour, and respect it when it's given. We respected you, and you throw it back in our faces? What kind of picture does that paint of the US marine corps? One that I feel your ex colleagues would be ashamed of.

    • @steverobeson
      @steverobeson 10 років тому +17

      Yella Dart First of all, no disrespect was intended...As A matter of fact, quite the opposite, as I stated. The FACTS are that the Star Spangled Banner celebrates the victory of US over British forces, and that is, Kind Sir or Ma'am, a matter of historical fact. That the Uniformed Services of the United Kingdom would play it is testament to the strength of our commitment and brotherhood to each other.
      Secondly, I am not an "ex" Marine. I am a Marine, albeit retired. And as for what picture I think my personally and freely expressed opinions paint of the Marine Corps is that I used the very freedom of speech that my service in the Marine Corps assured everyone who gathers under the Red, White and Blue.
      Lastly, inasmuch as I've put my name to my opinions and you're hiding behind anonyminity, I'd say there is nothing wrong with my Honour. It has been my privilege to stand-to and render Honors to "God Save The Queen", by the way, remembering the true lyrics and not the ones written for American consumption.
      Those things having been said, I reiterate my statement that you have to love an ally that plays your National Anthem when that anthem pays homage to having bested you in warfare. I say that fully appreciating the strength of brotherhood that exists between the United Kingdom and the United States, and it's that strength of brotherhood that brought us to the UK's defense not once, but twice in the last century. And if ever necessary again, we'll be there, again...

      Steven Robeson I guess I misunderstood your meaning, that's the problem with text, sometimes the meaning can be lost without intonation. I read it as a kinda mocking tone, in that the part that reads "your national anthem that celebrates their failure to subdue you in war" read to me like a boast or implication that we played it out of subservience rather than respect. Clearly I got the wrong idea from reading it. It does seem evident that your intention was gratitude and respect, and I would like to extend both to you in return. I'm an atheist, but the sentiment is what I want to convey when I say may God bless the United States of America.

    This brought tears to my eyes. I'm an American and not only am I proud of my Anglo-Saxon heritage, I'm extremely proud and feel blessed to have an ally in the greatest empire/country that has graced this planet. How any radical Islamist or terrorist group thinks that they could overcome the combined might of the two greatest countries on the face of the planet is beyond me. Twelve and as half years later I am still grateful for the support of Great Britain. I hope I speak for all Americans when I say, "Thank you England, for all your support throughout the years. I would gladly lay down my life for Great Britain's freedom and security, because I know you would do the same."
    God Save England and God Bless America!

    Not only the Queen broke protocol by playing the US national anthem, they played Sousa's compositions as well. Fantastic! Cheers!

    Hearing the crowd sing the Star Spangled Banner, in a place where no other nation's anthem is played,
    -
    and after watching 9/11 happen, was emotional for me. I was actually surprised that it touched me.

    That is amazing, I actually had never seen this and didnt know the Queen personally authorized the guards to play the american national anthem, brings tears to my eyes, right now we need more of this in the world meaning love and unity not everything that is going on, on the 19 year anniversary of 9-11 I wish that for everyone. God bless everyone. 💖

    Even though there are some times US and UK don't get along, we still care for each other and think about them. That's why I love UK.

    I was not born for 9/11, but as an American I understand the honor this was to have the people of my nation be treated with this compassion, comfort, dignity, and respect overseas is something truly beautiful. Thank you for supporting us in our darkest day.

    For the people who know anything about the United States Marine Corps, did you hear that yell at 3:50?

    Oh my God... I'm crying... I never new this happened to today... It's 2019 and I'm seeing this for the first time. I don't remember much from 9/11 I was little and my step mom didn't want us kids to see it... So a couple years ago I watched basically everything I could from footage of that day from bystanders to news to movies and shows... I watched UA-cam videos for 4 hours straight and just broke... The lives lost will forever be in my memory... I'd love to visit NY and see the memorial... But I don't think I'm ready just yet... One day I will be.
    Thank you for this UK... Thank you to the Queen ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    Makes me cry to see this video, the pain on people's faces after what happened, hope this brought them a small amount of comfort especially the Americans who were so far away from home.
