Paris Olympics: the rain falls mainly on the Seine

  • I went to the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony on the Seine... and it rained. Boy did it rain!
    Here's a quick video of what sort of day we locals in Paris had as the Games opened. TL;DR It was a day of sabotage, security... and getting soaked. But Paris was at the center of the world's attention (where many Parisiains believe it belongs!).

    One of my favorite athletes was on the Team USA boat (I’m American) so I watched it on tv, and honestly….I think the rain made it even more beautiful. I’ve never watched the opening ceremony for the Olympics before so I decided to watch and I absolutely loved it. I don’t think a lot of Americans who watched it realized that Paris was most likely trying to showcase what the city is known for: history with showing the iconic sights and the Louvre with the person running with the torch, fashion with the fashion show on the bridge, the music with the different artists, the PDA…..Paris is known as the City of love and having lots of PDA so I wasn’t surprised by the throuple happening. What made me tear up the most was seeing all the boats especially seeing my country Team USA”, the rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine song, the torch being passed around to the older gentleman in the wheelchair, the to the two black athletes lighting the cauldron, and of course Celine Dion.

      I think Paris gets a lot of points for holding the ceremony on the Seine. That made it stand out from every other Olympics. And it made us Parisians feel more connected to it. It was a shame it rained though. Otherwise it could have turned into an all-night party. (You might hate me for this, but I thought the John Lennon cover was one of the weakest points.... My favorite part was the silver horsewoman gliding along the water.)

    • @tiamarrow6366
      @tiamarrow6366 2 місяці тому +5

      @@amusingaida honestly I think the John Lennon cover made it a bit more emotional and considering the message behind the song, and especially with everything happening in the world now….it was meant to bring us all together. I absolutely loved the metallic horse coming down the river though, like they said it during the broadcast that it gave off cinematic vibes and I agree. I felt like I was watching history but with an epic cinematic touch to it.

    Bonjour Aida, and thanks for your take on the opening ceremony.
    I love Paris and I was excited to see the Seine being used as a backdrop rather than the usual stadium. But oh dear. It was Incredibly long and boring. A few highlights (the opera singer on the roof of le Grand Palais with the flag, the 'blood red' streamers) but mostly as damp as the weather.

    I think kudos to Paris for trying something new. Paying homage to environment is what the world needs to focus on right now and Paris did it on the grandeur stage. Instead of binding in walled stadiums, they showcased on Seine 👏🏻.
    Of course the weather is unpredictable, but while watching it on TV, looked like they managed it well.

    It was different, certainly unique using the boats to introduce the teams. I could relate, we took a 90 minute private boat tour last month on the Seine (without the rain), maybe the best way to see some of the more iconic sites in Paris. Kudos to the French government for seeding the clouds in order to get a downpour. I knew French technology led Europe. But this surpassed expectation. Of course this was an homage to Midnight in Paris. Lea Seydoux is caught in the rain as she runs into Owen Wilson's character. Mon dieu, she exclaims as the clouds discharge torrents of water. "But I love Paris in the rain," he exclaims "It's even more beautiful." And off they go-arm in arm. How utterly romantic. Marcron may have lost seats in the Assemblee. But he surprised us with Celine Dion's magnificent rendition of Piaf. Then the topper, he guaranteed the skies to weep-right on cue! After all, when your name is "a musing Aida"-how could you fail to say: "How operatic!" Joyously enjoying women's water volley ball from Washington DC--Chapeau bas!

      @@amusingaida Thanks for explaining. For someone who doesn't speak French, it was just a damn blue smurf. Ha. Love the humour attached to the story. Enjoy hosting these next two weeks. Our turn in 8 years time. High expectations now for Brisbane or there will be a Antoinette moment if we don't get it right.

    I like your channel especially where you become more philosophical. Noticed that you had a hiatus- hope things were okay. Also, you should talk more about your musing - it feels like that’s a big hole you’re creeping around? Because no one is interested?

      Those are the sorts of videos I like doing the most. There will be other ones coming. It's true they don't attract as much attention but they're important to me... As for the breaks -- my goal is to make videos when I have something of value (I hope) to produce and share. I'm never going to be beholden to content-creator cycles just to feed UA-cam with metronomic regularity. I like to be in control of my own life.

      Usually the words 'French' and 'disgusting' pop up when talking about escargots for lunch, or époisses cheese... or even back in the day when bikinis were invented and shocked the world, or the Enlightenment... so I'm sure Paris will live with that opinion for its opening ceremony

      Sure. Weren't you? There were something like 100,000 spots for people paying a fortune to see the boats go along the Seine.... and 220,000 free spots, many given to people like me who live in Paris.

      Be as real as you like, but I think the Paris opening ceremony showed a real burst of originality, with the scenes on the Seine. The London one was great, I'll grant you that (though many people unfamiliar with the Brits' attachment to their NHS scratched their heads at the dancing doctors and nurses). Too early for me to judge, but so far in my memory the two that stand out the most are Paris and London....
