I was there that night as well and I've been telling people this story for 30 years and no one believes me. I have a hard time believing myself when I tell the story! Thanks for this video confirming what I know I saw. Calling on Travis Pastrana to get one of your freestyle buddies and reenact this event!
Oh man, Finally someone brings this up. I was there and saw the whole thing and have been looking for footage for years on this. It was the craziest thing I ever saw
Wow!! No bullshit. I remember this. I was 11 years old. If I remember correctly, the steep ramps going up to the tight turn were flatbed trailers covered in dirt??
David.. I was sitting in the stands right there when it happened. and witnessed the whole thing. I was there helping jungle (jim chamberlain) that night. When the heat started I went up to the stands. Back then if you had a credential you could sit wherever you wanted as long as it wasn't a seat someone paid for. So here is what really happend.. he was comming up the face of the jump and around the middle of the face his bike rebounded and kicked him over the bars. And as he took off over the bars he went into a flying W. But the kick was so severe that it caused him to flip forward in the air. YES 100% HE DID FLIP. so as he came down his legs we spread apart enough that he could straddle Damon's bike just as he started on the downside of the jump. The only thing I can say about the whole incident is that it had to be an act of God because there's no other explanation. Everything had to come together perfectly for it to happen and if you tried to recreate what happen it would be impossible. I thought for sure the camera's cought it but to my surprise they didn't. Could you imagine If they did? It would not be just this urban legend it would be playing on a nonstop loop on every moto video to this day.. if you would like to here my version just reply here and I would be happy to tell you the story in detail..
@@359JoeyBack then the shocks had more bounce than today, so a kicker on the lip is gonna make the shocks react alot and if you heard the video he said the jump was steep and had a kick on the lip.
Ping! Thanks for this, I never comment but I have to back up this story here. I was on the other side of the stadium just happened to be looking in the right direction at the time and as a 16 yr old kid this is how I remember it also. I don't even bother telling the story because it was really that unbelievable ... Thanks PM1418, you captured the memory well
Well guys my name is Stan Lacey, formally from Western Oklahoma, and for the last 25 years, and now retired in Northern California, at Trilogy at Rio Vista, where you can find me golfing about 200 days a year on our golf course. But.....I can tell you almost exactly what happened because I witnessed it live as it happened! Top to bottom the whole incident! The most unbelievable, unscripted, accidental racing incident I have ever witnessed. My son, Brandon Lacey was trying to make the show that day and rode both the 125 and 250 afternoon heat races. When I say heat races, if you were there that afternoon temps were above 114 degrees and rising. Anyway, here is how I remember it. I was looking directly west to east at the jump, I was almost perpendicular to the side of the jump. I saw Damon single in go over the second jump back into the stadium. And I watched him just for a second coming down into the stadium, but something caught my eye behind him. It was Shane flying over the second jump, without his bike! I actually thought Shane clipped the second jump, throwing him over the bars, but as he mentioned he said he clipped Damon. Damon was may 1/3 the way down off of the last jump dropping into the stadium, and almost landing on the ground, when unbeknownst to Damon, Shane, as mentioned was kicked forward off of his bike and was doing a forward summersault and starting to fall. Just as Damon was landing Shane was finishing a perfect, full summersault flying W, with leg and arms open, and landed perfectly on Damon's bike like someone had set him there at the exact perfect time. I mean Damon's bike really didn't even really over compress. All the stars, the angles, the speed were just perfect for this to happen this way, and as Damon related Shane landed like a butterfly. Damon kinda looked around to see who was hanging onto him and slowed to the the left hand corner where Shane jumped off. Being involved in over 2000 amateur and pro racing motocross and selected national and supercross events during Brandon's career I never saw anything like this. I was in awe and must have asked 20 people if they say it. Anyway, glad Damon and Shane lived through it, and frankly, it was just one of those moments that that cannot ever be duplicated. Now a special shout out to my son, Brandon Lacey, good friend of Robbie Reynard, Guy Cooper, Dennis Hawthorne, Cliff Palmer, Chris Ridgeway, etc. Great early memories from Brandon's 1983 AMA National 50cc Overall Stock and Modified Championship at Ponca City, where Ray Fine Yamaha, Chickasha, Oklahoma that helped us out, and later as a fast Oklahoma/Texas amateur/expert, and later an aspiring AMA PRO was sponsored by Elk City Kawasaki/Suzuki owned by Roy and Kari Canard, yes you know their son Trey Canard. One big highlights was when we were in Houston, TX he and won his 125 afternoon heat race, and finished 3rd after leading the 250 heat race. Mr David Baily came to the his pits to congratulate him. He never made it to the big time but boy we had a great time. Could not be prouder of his efforts, as a racer, and now as a dad with a K- State graduate son, his daughter graduates from college this year, and he and his wife are on a cruise to Mexico with a 5 year old girl Emma, they have been taking care since she was 6 months old, and now are adopting.
I was there that night with friends sitting near where it happened. We saw Damon shut off at the last second because of a lapper in his way. He couldn't double so he rode across the roof and he was just starting to go down the other side. Shane didn't know Damon hadn't doubled so he did the double across the roof of the building. He landed right behind Damon and rear-ended Damon's bike bike hard. Shane immediately flipped over the bars and landed perfectly behind Damon with his arms going right around Damon's body. Damon rode down to the bottom looked back and saw Shane. He slowed and Shane jumped off.
I was there!! I was 16 and it was my first time at a supercross race. I was watching Huffman wanting him to catch Ryno. It was amazing to witness!! Looked like a perfectly executed stunt. I’ll never forget it

I have heard about this story for years. Looked everywhere to see a video on it but this is as close as it gets. BIG thank you to Shane for the Castaic MX track, The Gorman MX track (when he ran it) and “Race around the lake” all those years. ✊
i remember art eckman giving a play by play during motoworld of this happening! calling it a crazy night in vegas for the 125s thank you for doing this follow up and getting it explained!

Whats funny is as soon as he said something you instantly recognize the voice from the old podium interviews and such from the past. I saw it from right next to grand stand on that grassy spot next to that tree along the fence. I saw it happen right in front and over the top of me. It was a front flip. Shane landed so soft on the back right when Damon landed softly on the downside. It looked like a perfect stunt even though it was an accident. Shout out to my friend Chris Ridgeway (181) who made the night show and I was put handing for.
After the race Damon had a rented Mustang and we drove around Vegas. People were going crazy waving at him and we could tell he was still thinking “what just happened?” 😂.
I've been racing for a pretty long time from 65s to a local 450 A guy now and I can say I have never seen another rider get tossed on to another riders bike after a big get off like he's your girl. I've seen some pretty funny and scary crashes but that is a cartoon crash if I've ever heard of one...lmfao
Something similar happened to my brother racing Snocross in 2005. He was top 3 off the start after the first turn was an 80' tabletop 3 wide off the jump he was in the middle and got pinched mid-flight by the outside two, He jumps off onto another sled bear hugging the rider and sitting side saddle when they landed.
LMAO at all the overblown drama 🤣... someone jumped ship onto a drag bike at 150mph from another bike in the other lane in the UK, meh....all the goofball comments below....🤣 looks like everyone in the World was there with their Moms.....
We need a Discovery channel type of animation to reenact this like the different Titanic sinking theories. I know you guys don't know how to make that so just use toys and popsicle sticks.

Excellent stuff. I witnessed a very similar situation in 2002 or 2003 at New Hampshire International Speedway (we just called it Loudon) at a LRRS event. The Aprilia rider squeezed just a hair more and that was it; he went OTB. He didn’t flip though, nope he landed perfectly on the tail section of that Duck, put his arms around the Ducati pilot, and kept his legs out and off the track surface. The Ducati rider looked back really quickly, realized he had a passenger, and kept it upright and rode into the T1 runoff area on the banking. The Aprilia rider got off the back, slapped the Ducati rider on the back, and went to collect his yard saled RS250. There were probably 10 of us watching in T1 that morning, plus the corner workers and flagger that saw this happen.
Travis pastrana should recreate this moment!
He could pull it off
My boss said he flipped.
Didn't Rollorball Pederson jump onto Gentleman Jim Holley's bike over a double in Supercross as well?
Epic! 😂
I laughed at this story jist as hard as if i would have saw it 😆 🤣 or really close
That's incredible! Lol
lol
I swear I thought I saw this on the VHS tapes that Dave Dispane used to narrate??????
Awesome story...lmao!!
Might have to get our video guy in some animation classes for this 😂
I had no idea tim stack use to race
ua-cam.com/video/maLWOa7-Ub8/v-deo.htmlsi=mx8DqyiBctfbNr7p I was there as well I’m 41 now
