- This episode covers 4 days worth of tarpon fishing on the Dutch side of St. Maarten. Despite only being able to fish during the hours of first light and last light due to the amount of boat traffic coming in and out of the bridge, I still carried on and ended up landing my first "bridge poon". Looking forward to targeting them on the beach in the future!
The Atlantic tarpon, also known as Megalops atlanticus, is a large, silver-colored fish found in the western Atlantic Ocean. They are commonly found in coastal waters, estuaries, and mangrove swamps from Virginia to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
Atlantic tarpon are known for their impressive size, with adults reaching lengths of up to 8 feet and weighing over 280 pounds. They have a unique ability to gulp air at the surface, which allows them to survive in oxygen-poor waters. Tarpon are also famous for their acrobatic leaps out of the water when hooked by anglers, making them a popular sport fish.
These fish are highly migratory, traveling long distances to spawn in offshore waters. They are also known for their longevity, with some individuals living up to 50 years.
The Atlantic tarpon plays a crucial role in the ecosystem as both predator and prey. As predators, tarpon feed on a variety of fish, crustaceans, and other small marine animals, helping to control the populations of these species. They are known for their voracious appetite and can consume large quantities of prey.
On the other hand, tarpon themselves are preyed upon by sharks, dolphins, and larger predatory fish. By serving as a food source for these animals, tarpon help maintain the balance of the food chain in their ecosystem.
Additionally, tarpon play a role in nutrient cycling. When they feed on smaller fish and crustaceans, they help transfer energy and nutrients through the food web. Their waste products also contribute to the nutrient levels in the water, supporting the growth of phytoplankton and other marine organisms.

When is the best season for tarpons on that place?
The tarpons are there all year round around the island. It would be best to travel there during Nov-Mid May to avoid the hurricane season!
I just came back from St Maarten. There's another spot you might want to try and its close to the salt pond in Philipsburg.
Hopefully I can find the time to try the salt pond this year. Will also be trying a cast or two at the Oyster Pond Marina which was damaged by the hurricane back in 2017 (French side of the island). Hopefully there’s a snook or tarpon for me to catch haha
