    My grandparents bought their home in 1959. They picked out everything for it. They had a set of drawers built into the stairs in their basement. The drawers were even graduated to fill the space (the top shelf was the smallest, bottom is the longest). Their kitchen even had built-in in floor to ceiling storage pantries. Also, they had kitchen cabinets that had pull out shelves for her pots and pans.

    When I was a kid growing up in a tiny 5 flight walk-up one bedroom apartment, my mom had to think outside the box to make it livable for her, me and my little brother. She slept in the living room, gave me the tiny bedroom, and had a carpenter friend build a steps unit with storage inside each step. Then she bought a matching pair of book shelves, put the metal lid that originally covered the bathtub (in the kitchen) over the top of the facing bookshelves to hold a small mattress. The bookshelves thus formed a tiny room, complete with a desk and lamp, and the steps enabled him to climb up to the bed on top. Pretty ingenious on a tight budget!

      Was this outside of the US? It sounds really interesting but some of it I don’t understand. Like a lid for a bathtub? And what is a “steps unit”? I understand how this made a bed, and that there would be a cubby area beneath it , but I’m not sure about the desk area, and I’m not sure if I’m even correct about what I think I understood. I wish there were pictures ir video because it sounds really cool. Your mother was very creative!

      They could also be used as war bunkers. In world war 2, people had to build their own shelrers which cost time and energy but if they had the frigged they just had to bury them and done. It would probably not be worth it though because they costed loads and poor people in the UK were given Andersen shelter kits for free

    Although it isn't completely hollow, I have a chair that has storage built in. I used to have a couch that matched and each seat cushion was actually a lid that was hinged with storage below. It was a great place to store extra blankets and pillows, and I used the chair one to store toys for the grandkids so they were out of sight when the kids weren't here but easy to get out if they were. I have a larger sectional couch now and the chair is getting old and no longer matches but I might try to find a cover for it as it is so handy to have!!

    The ground fridge is a great idea! The only issue, the temp is too warm to safely chill food. The temp needs to be under 41F in order to keep your food safe and last longer. There is a thing called the TDZ (Temperature Danger Zone) and that is between 41F-135F. If food is stored in that zone, it is prone to bacteria growth.

    • @mikebeck9844
      @mikebeck9844 Рік тому +7

      I was taught 40 and 140. Also, food stored in that zone is MORE prone to bacterial growth. Bacteria still survives and reproduces outside that zone, just not as well. Regardless, this would work fine for shelf stable foods such as fruits and vegetable that don't require refrigeration at all but cool temps could still keep it fresh longer. It's a root cellar, not a refrigerator.

      @@Goofy-ahh-UA-cam-channelif they smelled, you were doing something wrong. Peobablynoverstocking or too small of a tank. They definitely need 20% water changes ONCE a week but not more than that. That is if you cycled the tank properly prior to placing life in there. The hard bits are knowing how many fish per gallon of water which is also determined by type of fish. Some fish are nasty and need more a bigger tank. Some , like goldfish, get to be gigantic (over12in) and need a huge tank. Put a goldfish in a 5 gallon tank and not only will it die. It will die quickly bc it will soil the water faster than the filter can work.

    In my tiny Boston studio, I just used furniture that could either serve more than one purpose, or move out of the way. For example, most of my storage, including my pantry, consisted of rolling wire shelves. It was not only more organized and hygienic than standard closets, drawers, and cabinets, it made all of my items easy to access from all sides. I used to roll all the tools I was using for any given project to my work space, and then roll them away when I was doing something else there. I even saved money by line drying my clothes on hangers across two ski poles that I laid between two wire shelves! .

    Another cracking video full of awesome ideas there Be Amazed 😊💖 I already have two of these ideas and I could Really use that underfloor wine cellar.. Not for wine though but for craft supplies, there never is enough space for those 😂😂😂 I already have four swing out shelves in my kitchen cupboards, I have CTD so limited reach so they really help with that but they're buggers if somethings been put in wrong as saucepans etc can fall off and jam the space required to swing out 🙄😕 The other thing I have is a cheap version of the stick on tiles. This place didn't have a fireplace and for me a hearth is the focal point and a comforting gathering place within a home. I have an electric stove fire, painted up a wooden mantlepiece from ebay then used Moroccan style tile stickers to create a back. It looks great and if I ever get bored of them, I can swap them out for about a tenner. I love the idea of things within a household having such different multiple uses, I like tiny houses videos too and they have a Lot of awesome practical storage designs ❤

    I hope they realize using the ground to cool things isn't a new idea. My dad told me his grandmother did that her whole life. She also had a block of ice delivered that she put in a box. That's where the term icebox came from.

    • @sabinegierth-waniczek4872
      @sabinegierth-waniczek4872 11 місяців тому

      Hi, this is correct, and it was an ingenious way to preserve food before electricity and technology provided better solutions. I admire the men who delivered the ice, as TMK heavy lifting and the heavy and sharp ice prongs made the job difficult and dangerous! So many things were home-delivered in former times, not least coals or big batches of groceries, and it provided many jobs. Today with supermarkets and electrical household appliances,s uch service is completely forgotten.
      Nonetheless the ice box is not a refrigerator in a strict sense, as when the ice is melted, it is a simple cabinet (YT channel host SueMe did - among other topics - a series about kitchen appliances over the last ca.120 years, I recall the icebox was also mentioned).
      A refrigerator produces a cold environment continuously (dependent on steady electrical current, of course). Ice boxes may still (or again) be a good solution for regions where the electrical grid is often failing or non-existent (load shedding in South Africa...).
      IMHO it is worth the effort to find out how our grandparents went about their daily chores, we could learn much, and even dig out some useful stuff to solve our own energy shortage issues.
      [Storytime again, if not TLDR:
      For a long time the ice (at least to my knowledge it was the case for Germany and Bavaria) came from ponds (to this day often still bearing the name of "Eisweiher" = ice pond) which regularly froze over in winter. Out of the frozen surface then blocks or strips were cut out and stored until the next winter, or sold to customers.
      Many breweries had so called "Eiskeller" or ice cellars for the chilled storage of beer that otherwise could have easily spoiled, as it is a remarkably vulnerable victual. Above the cellars often trees were planted, which by the circulation of water in their roots, evaporation through their foliage, and the shadow cast by their canopies would help to enhance the cooling effect of the ice in the cellars. The chestnut trees still typically seen in Bavarian beergardens are vestiges of this custom, as they were the trees which were found to best cater for the tasks.]

      That would be so awesome! Reminds me of the one @ Seattle v that u can walk underneath. For a house it seems like it would be almost impossible to do bc of so many reasons. But... Maybe if it was just 1 room like that... Ooh, or better yet, just a part of the floor, like a sunroof for the bottom level and like an interactive rug for the top level?? Seems almost doable but still very hard to do. My friend built an aquarium into an entertainment center in one room, then cut a hole in the wall behind it (so u can see it from the other room but it doesn't stick out) & hung a (homemade) picture frame around it in the other room. It turned out amazing, & he did it all by himself- without any special skills or tools, & with not a lot of money.
      Fish tanks are a nice addition to any room, anywhere, any size, & anyhow u wanna decorate them... in my opinion.

I can recommend the design for everybody who can afford the slightly higher than usual price, as over a long time of use it benefits your back if you do not have to crouch into dark recesses to pull out your pots and pans! I don't like the stair fish tank because going up and down the stairs could rumble the tank and scare the fish. But maybe it has something built in so the foot traffic wouldn't be a bother to their fish. If so, that's very kind!

    My favorite one is the movable walls
    Imagine the silliness of making silly shapes or even having a secret room to store your knife collection in
    I totally did not steal the knives
    Or should I say, Steel

    The ground fridge is just a root cellar. They have been around for hundreds of years. They are also not a replacement for an electronic refrigerator as 50f (10c) is in the danger zone.

    Okay the ceiling bed is kinda cool, but what if there's a power surge while you're asleep and it lifts into the ceiling?
    I like my body not squished, thank you very much.

    I have the slim shoe rack (without the seat and cabinet) in my entryway. I absolutely love it because the space is narrow and it fits perfectly. But my bf‘s size 47 shoes do not fit and thin slippers, well, the slip down the back 😂. Pricey, but practical. 8.5/10, would buy again 😊

    5:48 it would be cooler if you could install one of the sinking ones on an apartment balcony instead of being limited to a rolling one

    Convertible cribs are far from new. My eldest is 15 and we had one since he was born. We never got to the 'convert to bed' stage only because it was involved in a recall (back when they recalled all drop-side cribs). At that point we just got him a single bed as he was 4 years old.

    For the sliding stairs, could there be a sliding barrier at the top for safety so kids don't go jumping off from a high place?

      Or even better no kids

    • @renae3679
      @renae3679 Рік тому +2

      Well, as an Architecture student, the first thing you need to consider is who will be the user/s of the building. The sliding stairs isn't a good idea if your client has small kids around or is planning on having one. But it's a good design for small spaces like for dormitories, or small apartments.

    I keep my fridge set at 33 degrees F (o.55 C)... freezer is at 0 degrees F (-17.78 C), so the ground fridge really needs some additional cooling. 50 degrees F is too warm to keep food safe.

    Great video. Definitely gonna save it. There are so many awesome ideas (that I wish I would have thought of first). I want them all, lol. I appreciate the many pictures, videos, & thorough descriptions of each one. I really like that they are all actually useable & not just something to take up extra space & throw away money on. Speaking of money, my favorite part of the video is that you included prices! While some products are affordable & others are worth saving for, they were almost all things that regular folk can not only dream of but actually obtain to make their house into the home they dream of!
    Keep up the good work!
    We're looking forward to more AMAZING videos to come...
