It's no shock that a jointer can be a very dangerous piece of equipment. Any spinning blade of any sort gets my utmost respect. My dad lost the tip of his index finger on a jointer pushing a piece of wood through the tool without a push stick/block. Before I worked in present job in oncology, I worked 15 years in orthopedics. I can't tell you how many people I saw through the years with lost digits and worse from power tools. Some were hobbyists but many were contractors. Many of those injuries were because people removed or inactivated safety guards. Some were due to carelessness from a gradual loss of respect for the tool because of familiarity and frequent use of a tool over time. Please be careful out there people. Thanks John for reminding us of this danger. Love those vintage Craftsman tools. Great restorations.

I have to agree with you about safety equipment, PPE can be very dangerous.
For example two men in the UK working on train tracks where killed last year. Because the hearing protection prevented them hearing the train approaching from behind them !!!!
And in my experience its usually office staff who have no experience of doing your job who tell you what ppe to wear

Jointer anecdote: I was helping a deaf/mute friend, David, process about 500 b-ft of 4/4 red oak he needed for a kitchen job. For some reason, Dave had removed the guards on all the commercial grade machine tools in his shop. In order to speed things up, we were doing a ballet without shutting off anything (noisy, but Dave didn't care, of course). About half way through humping all that wood, I needed a break so I put my hand down and leaned on the !8" jointer table. I looked down to see my hand about 2" from the open cutter throat. Then I thought of my arm being swallowed by the cutter head - it scared the bejesus out of me! Still does, Scout.

I agree with the safety comments. I use "IsoTunes" hearing protection and it only reduces noise to below OSHA standards. I wear them when I work with my jointer and planer as well as mowing the lawn. I can hear the surrounding noise such a machines or engines, but to full volume. I am not a marketer for IsoTunes, but genuinely like their product.

It's so true most of the old family tools were Craftsman even the old power tools.. and it was a name you said with pride.. My Craftsman set or drill or whatever.. now not so much unfortunately... But you never know what comes out of the ashes all this could turn around and we can see some great new domestic made tools arise.. especially if we the consumers demand it.

Great restoration mate. Love the red highlights. Back in the day when I had more testosterone than brains I used to ride bikes. I had an open faced and a full faced helmet. I chose the full face one on a day of riding the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. That road doesn’t have a straight bit in it. Follows the coastline in southern Victoria and is the most beautiful place. I was riding hard until I hit a switchback section covered in gravel, left by someone on the bitumen. I came off, face planted and slid down the road straight under an oncoming car. Lucky for me the car saw what happened and stopped. Well after they extracted me from under the car, the chin guard and bottom part of the faceplate were gone. Ground down by the bitumen. Without that full face helmet I wouldn’t have a face today. 🇦🇺👍

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 роки тому

Shed Man X I have 3 full face helmets, they are great for impacts but so many times you tend to go faster with a full face helmet... How many accidents might have been avoided if speed was not an issue? Great for falls but how many have they caused! 😃👍

ScoutCrafter Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t disagreeing with you, your video just brought back some bad old memories that should have stayed buried. That was almost 40 years ago. I totally agree if I was wearing my open faced helmet, I wouldn’t have been going as hard. The mixture of a sense of safety and stupidity is a deadly mix. Thanks for the feedback mate. Love your videos, rants and Instagram posts. 👌

That ratchet was made by The Plomb Tool company later Proto for Sears. I get a lot of my tool history from the Alloy Artifacts website. It has over 4,000 pictures of antique tools. I also live Washington State after moving out of Commiefornia back in 1981. Plomb was a huge tool company back in the day. They bought up a bunch of other tool companies over the years. I believe it was their Penens tool branch that made that model of ratchet.

Another useful video. Your comments on safety are well taken. Don't let the equipment lull you into a false sense of safety. We're never supposed to suspend common sense and awareness. I do wear shooters ear muffs for my dad's ancient Craftsman table saw. It is really loud. Very nice job on the tool restoration. I have Craftsman wrenches and ratchets from the 1950s, and the examples you restored look older than that. Thanks for keeping vintage Craftsman tools alive., and best regards from the Intermountain West.

Sometimes that safety equipment can get in the way. I've always hated dust masks and respirators, but now I can't go to Harbor Freight or food shopping without one! I remember when I started my first day on the job working with dock levelers with steel-toed boots. The guys told me it was more dangerous to wear steel-toed boots because if any of the materials we worked with landed on mt foot, the plate would deform and cut my toes off. That myth was busted. Then there was the time I welded in short sleeves. Learned my lesson after a full day of that.
We are always one mistake away from injury in our shops. Great restoration!

My father and I spent most of our lives in the garages and we used about every brand of tool that was available but Dad always swore by Craftsman ratchets for body work. If he had some rough and ready work to be done he reached for his S-K set, but for body work it was Craftsman because the ratchet heads had very fine teeth. In a tight spot where you could only swing the ratchet back and forth about a half an inch the Craftsman would grab the next tooth and turn the bolt. The S-K was tough as hell but was so coarse you had to have plenty of room to get it to the next tooth. Plus the Craftsman had a great warrenty at Sears and cost half of what a Snap-On would cost. Does anyone know of a store that will replace Craftsman tools since Sears is all but gone? Good Job as usual guy!

Nice craftsman wrench and ratchet, came out really nice too! The other day you showed that Stanley chalk o matic and by coincidence I was looking at one the day before online and quite liked it. After you were so enthusiastic about it too, I looked it back up again and bought it right away. I will wait until you do yours because you are going to think about stuff I never would've. Look forward to it, it is such a nice piece.
You are right about the protection (I do not like gloves for that reason), I never really used ear protection but since my ears are weak to start with that was a dummy choice to, I have this return constant beep. Don't wish it on anyone and I got it mildly. So use your ear protection wisely indeed.

Great vid again. The wrench is from the late 30s-40s with the underline C. If you like vintage craftsman you should check out my face book group Craftsman Tool Collectors. All kinds of pics and information

Man I hate to hear that about your friend Jamie. Hoping him a speedy recovery. Also condolences to the family of the gentleman who passed away. The wrenches turned out fantastic. Definitely looks like a Proto ratchet. As far as hearing protection, I thought the same thing about the ones that play music. You can hear a little with ear muff types but not with the music playing. Take care. 👍🏼

I was wondering where you got my rusty wrench but then remembered mine was a Blackhawk! My go to wrenches were a 3/4 for injector fittings like on the injector itself and the pump for bleeding and a 9/16 for setting up truck brakes. Other than that it was every man for hisself! NICE job on everything. The old ratchet is a beaut! So take care in the capital of everything sideways. I had lab work done and it was the same today as 3 weeks ago. NOTHING but staff. Go figure and GBWYou!

The marks on the inside of the open end wrench are probably from the broaching process. It was nice to see the internals of the old ratchet. They turned out pretty good.

I like Craftsman tools but growing up we lived near a Wards so we had a lot of Powr-kraft tools. I still have some from the 60's I use. We raced boats and our setup tools were sets of power-kraft wrenches. That 13/16 in a closed end would be our spark plug tool.
Wearing a helmet should be your own choice. The problem is the injuries and deaths we all pay for with money. I don't care if you wear a helmet but don't make me pay for your mistake. When Mike Rowe went to see Diesel electric trains being built he asked: "Shouldn't you wear a Helmet?" the guy said: "Are you kidding? These things weigh tons. If this falls your'e dead so a helmet is pointless." Like we always used to say "Safety Last"
As always good job the Tools. Red is my favorite color.

Anyone who works around equipment should consider noise canceling ear protection. It allows up to a certain level of sound through but shuts down when loud noises are present. They can be less than $50 or several hundred for custom molded. Our shooting range requires them so you can hear commands at the firing line. I also use them at home - you can hear all your equipment - it is only as loud as your voice. As our range master asked - how much is your hearing and your fingers worth? Fifty bucks is really cheap - less than a box of most pistol ammo!

You have ears for a reason. We are now in the 21st century and they can not come up with ear protection that allows you to hear but shield you from excessive decibels. So that you are alert with your surroundings. Problem is today they also want to hear ,music while they work and the ear buds cut off noise around you.
