The Boulder was supposed to be voiced by The Rock, but the Rock's schedule was full so they got his friend Mick Foley to do it, this episode is full of Wrestling references
yo fr? thats so cool damn
Wasn’t his name also supposed to be The Rock, but it was copyrighted so they had to change it to Boulder? Or was that just rumor?
@@wubsvasnormandy9043 i hope not. The Boulder is way funnier.
@@wubsvasnormandy9043 That's just a rumor. Names can't be copyrighted. They can be _trademarked,_ but a quick Google search suggests that Dwayne Johnson has never trademarked the name.
I never realized that was Mick Foley this whole time, he makes good voice actor
Something I never realized watching this when I was younger: Toph’s dad literally hired someone who *just* kidnapped his daughter to retrieve his kidnapped daughter.
I guess the logic "If he can kidnap her once, he can reverse kidnap her."
Toph's blindness must be genetic then, since her father can't see the blatantly obvious.
Bruh😂 I didn’t notice it until I saw your comment just now. Lol
Bro is a concerned father, but not a good father 😅
At least he got someone with experience that way.
Toph is the kind of character who joins the party 20-30 levels above you, and I love that about her
Best running joke in the series is "we forgot toph is blind moments."
She gets more stuff thrown at her than a vtuber with that as a channel point redeem.
FINALLY!!!!!
THE BEST CHARACTER EVER HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!
THE BOULDER!!!
The reason they thought Toph took a dive is because Airbending is invisible. Air cannot be seen which makes it VERY difficult to defend against. In the show you can only see it because the animators had to make it that way. That’s why they thought Toph took a dive, because Aang’s air attack couldn’t be seen
Also. There are no more airbenders. So, why would they suspect airbending in an earthbending tournament?
Toph is blind she couldn't see it anyway but she has trouble sensing it I think bc air
Remember all those currents and stuff we see is SPECIFICALLY for us.
@@thedarkemissary also why would u expect the avatar of all people to join your tournament
I think one of the big reasons a lot of fans of "reaction" content go out of their way to not spoil things (besides just being decent people) is that we LOVE the genuine, well, REACTION you get to some of our favorite moments. Its the same reason I'll watch my favorite show over and over with different friends, just to see them feel the same things I felt when I watched it. Reaction videos (especially great ones like yours) give people the same feeling in my opinion. Spoiling shit would just ruin that for everyone.
The sad thing is that all that it takes is one POS to ruin everything for everybody. Thankfully the ATLA community isn't known for blatant spoilers, but we still have the people that just have to hint too much about things, otherwise they'll clearly die or something lol.
I have watched ATLA alone way too many times to count and i have watched at least 10 different reaction channels react to it as well. Always enjoy watching the reactions to some of the big plotpoints
Exactly! You get a sense of excitement and happiness when you see other people enjoying something you love.
Yes, we get a kick out of an oblique hint or two, but ultimately, the vicarious first time is what we come for. To see the wheels turning as people try to figure out mysteries or freak out over the major hype moments, and that can't happen if we spell everything out.
It's a pity that anime communities don't do that especially MHA and AOT fans. Particularly when reactors ask certain questions that are answered or clarified later.
Fun fact:
Instead of being based off of Hung Gar (I believe its also called Tiger Style), Tophs earthbending is based off of Southern Praying Mantis style. A martial art that specializes in close range combat and is focused on arm strength.
I believe it was also created by a blind woman according to legend. Which was a selling point for her character and the style. The original plan was for "Toph" to be a 16-year-old male. But the head writer was insistent that it be a young blind girl. The creators weren't sold until this style was proposed for her fighting style.
Some studies actually belive thia fight style was created by a blind woman
I think the tunneling guy with the glasses also used it since his arm stance were pretty similar to Toph's whenever he showed up
Hung gar is tiger-crane style .
And a box that was created by a woman is wing chun .
Toph's Dad: "I've let you have far too much freedom. From now on, you will be cared-for and guarded twenty-four hours a day."
Toph: "Oh? You gonna get that guy who can stop me? What's his name...Michael McDoesntexist?"
W reference
Hellsing ultimate abridged.
Hilarious, I recommend watching it.
Toph and Alucard would either be besties or kill each other
@@HealingandHarmor both, both is very possible.
Fun fact: For The Boulder, they naturally wanted to get the Rock to voice him. Unsurprisingly they couldn't, but they were able to get The Rock's friend and fellow wrestler Mick Foley to do the voice.
Came to the comments to make sure this fun fact got in here ☺️
it's extra ironic because "foley" is the art of making sounds to be added to footage.
Yeah, because, as I understand it, Dwayne has a clause in his contract saying any character he voices isn’t allowed to lose a fight or something like that. Kinda egotistical if you ask me.
Toph is not only one of the best characters in an animated series, she's one of the best characters of all time in any media.
Not just that but she’s somehow makes it hard to go back to earlier episodes as the group doesn’t feel completely without her
She's also a strong independent female with a disability. She's 20 years ahead of the times and still dominates any modern female character in terms of writing and characterization.
if you remember the little girl from the fortune teller episode who had a crush on aang, the creators of the show liked her voice actress so much they invited her back for the role of toph here
That's pretty rad. I love it when VA's in minor roles get a chance at a major one.
Toph has the best and worst "vision" in the series. She can basically see 360 degrees around her in with about as much range as you can see. It's also said that she can sense earth in the air, so like when an earth bender sends a rock at her, she can sense that. The biggest limitation with that is metal as you can't bend metal. However, she can't see anything not connected to the earth. So birds in the air, are invisible to her. This is also why she had trouble detecting Aang. His air bending allowed him to extend his time in the air when he was off the ground. While Toph can probably estimate where someone jumping would land, with Aang it's pointless. Hence, the "light on his feet" and "twinkletoes" comments.
if I'm not mistaken toph can bend metal later on (despite the show telling us otherwise), I'm pretty sure that happened at one point in the series..? it's been a long time since i watched this show, but i feel i remember that happening. I'm rewatching it now after many years now with alicias reactions.
@@IrisThatOneGothMfShe invents metal bending at the end of Season 2. However, when I made this comment, Alcia wasn't that far along so I was avoiding Spoilers. Also, everything I saw is true at this point in the series. Later events change that, though.
Let's not fool ourselves, we all knew Toph was going to be Aliciax favourite the moment she started this series, and we all have been biting our nails w8ing for this episode.
Now she is going to experience why Toph is number one.
LETS GO THE GOAT HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!!
Huh? Iroh’s been in the show since the start
@@Alex-lk5pf Boi Iroh is a God compared to all the extras and he can't be replaced by any other character but Toph is the best at what she does plus she's my fav bcuz she got the will to do what she wants no matter what the challenges she has to face
@@HeroHawksi always remember the chapter when those 2 interact as one of my fav
Hell yeah! The Boulder!
Fun Fact: The Earth Bender in the intro was originally supposed to be Aang’s earth bending master but the writers decided to have a character that is the same “age” as Aang and created Toph and to be his teacher instead. Also the fire bender in the intro is actually Azula
Aren’t all the benders in the intro actual characters in the show? The water bender is Paku, the Earth bender is the Boulder, the fire bender is Azula, and the air bender is Aang
@ravenblood1954 funnily enough, the earth bender is not the Boulder. The earth benders used in the intro got reused to be Avatar Roku's earthbending teacher instead.
I think I’ve heard that the intro characters were originally intended to be Aang’s bending teachers. The earthbending teacher was changed to Toph and the firebending teacher’s design was repurposed for Azula. And Pakku is still Pakku.
I remembered this actually being my first ever episode of avatar when I was about 6 years old. I was at my auntie's and my cousins were playing this episode on the TV and I was so in love with toph's character and her fight. It still remains uncontested as one of the best episodes of the show in my eyes! I'M GLAD YOU'VE FINALLY MET TOPH. Her and Iroh are my favourite characters in the entire series.
I LOVE Sokka going "Water Tribe". Lol represeeent!
My friend at work and I have this thing where we go "Water Tribe" past each other as we walk out of work, like Sokka does. Lol
Toph’s feet, I would suppose, can only passively “hear” around herself and focuses when she “listens” intently. That’s why it was only when the ambushers were close that she felt them. She was also talking to Aang, that could’ve distracted her.
Yup, it is like passive sonar
Hey, this is THE episode! Man, this reaction is going to be so much fun!
“Hey, you remember in Super Mario Sunshine-“
*PTSD intensifies*
The Blind Bandit is literally one of my favorite episodes in all Avatr, due to the introduction to Toph, my favourite character. I just love how the series managed to introduce a new member to the Gaang in such a natural way... And a character with a disability at that, who stands on it's own at the same time and isn't used as a joke! So excited to see the new group dynamics!
Fun fact Toph’s bending is unique to her. And when I say unique I really mean unique. While the animators drew the earthbenders in Hung Gar style of Kung fu. The animators gave Toph a completely different style which is called Chu-Ka which is actually rumored to be invented by actual blind martial artist.
Fact check: Toph uses the praying mantis style for earth bending. That is more defensive fighting techniques then offensive. Most earthbenders use various forms of hun ga style of southern kung fu
Her name is Toph, because it sounds like tough, and that's just what she is
Nobody noticed toph struggled to sense aang cause how light footed he was during tournament
"NUTHIN BUT NUTZ!!"
- Toph (probably)
"Aang doesn't treat anybody differently" which is exactly why her parents got caught in the food crossfire there haha
I never considered how tragic it could've been if Toph hadn't run away. What a genuinely sad way to and an episode if they did that.
Best Girl has Arrived! For me Toph is one of the most important characters in children's media. As a disabled child I connect to Toph deeply growing up, as so many people treat us like we are "made of glass, noting more than a a helpless animal to be protected" and a lot of media treats us the same. Not only dose Avatar show Toph going through this exact thing many of us experience that many of us experience in real life it's also not how we are introduced to her; when we first meet her it's as the confident fighter rather than the "helpless child." When so many disabled characters are written as nothing more than their disability, Toph stands apart as a character in her own right, being blind is "what" she is not "who" she is. Avatar's portrays us as we are, just different not broken, and for that I am forever grateful.
Hey Alicia, discovered your channel a few days ago and I’ve been loving the reaction content! Just wanted to say keep up the good work queen
I thinks it’s probably a safe bet to say that Toph is the second favorite character in the entire Avatar franchise (including Legend of Korra).
Obviously, Iroh takes the top spot but Toph is a VERY close runner up
This is one of the best episodes in the whole series in my opinion. Toph is just perfection :)
Toph is where Avatar really started as a show for me. Toph is the fresh breath of dirty air that the group needs.
Toph is the fan favorite for a reason ahaha. I'm glad you took to it. Now to see how you react to team Avatar with this entire group of misfits.
This episode's where this show starts going hard and doesn't stop. Ever.
FOR REAL! Book 2 elevates the show as a whole, but after The Blind Bandit its just banger after banger after banger.
That's what she said
Fun fact: the girl that voice is the blind bandit aka Toph is the same girl that voices Meng from the fortune teller episode
I’m really feeling like I’m reliving these episodes vicariously thanks to you, like I knew everything was gonna happen and even then I still had chills when she clouded the arena and knocked the ring master, absolutely amazing!
I think one of my favorite things in this show is meeting the same elemental masters shown in the intro and discovering they're not quite what you expect.
The intro had me think the Boulder had to be a stoic and feared warrior, not a WWE wrestler.
One thing you will learn as time goes on, if toph was born the avatar we would have gotten about one season before she sunk the fire nation into the ocean. She it a god in little girls clothing
I’m so glad you have reached this part of the show because Toph is my favorite character
If swearing was allowed on this show, we all agree Toph would be the show's biggest pottymouth.
As a very recent watcher of this channel seeing the older models is WILD!
Toph is the only one in the entire show who uses Southern Praying Mantis style to earthbend
Hung Gar Kuen is the default earthbending style
(And yes I had to google it)
Earth Bending is based on the Chinese kung fu Hung Gar. Toph's Earth Bending is based on Praying Mantis style which legend says was created by a blind nun.
The name's Toph 'cause it sounds like Tough!
Never have there ever been a bigger come up in the history of fiction than the tough toph
9:42
The moment we've all been waiting for
YEAAAAAAAAAH! TOPH FINALLY SHE IS HERE! She, and Uncle Iroh, are biggest (and i mean BIGGEST) badasses in show
4:30 More like Ice Beam haha and it's super effective.
YUSS! The intro of my favorite character of the series, AND my favorite fight of the series too!
LETS GO! THE GREATEST EARTH BENDER HAS ARRIVED!
Yo I just had an epiphany... when Toph is all like "imma wipe that grin off your face" and the dude's like "im not smiling"... she blind. So of course she _assumes_ he'd be grinning. So really the dude's just helping out by giving her context... I be stupid
avatar the last airbender is one of the few master pieces that is the best going in blind
Compared to other characters, Toph has the most moments that I get hype for when watching reactions. Some are cool, some are funny, and some are ''YOU CAN DO THAT!?!?!"
22:44 Double check not just the top of the roof (above the shingles), but the interior structure. They’re wood, not Earth.
Even if they were standing on clay tiles, there are multiple materials between them and Toph. That can muffle vibrations, like sand.
Remember the gusts of air we see are specifically for our benefit, to them it’s just as invisible as regular wind is.
HERE SHE IS!
toph is my favourite character in atla, her character is so damn cool and her attacks are phenomenal. the animators did amazing with how they animated her earthbending vision
Also, the creatures from Super Mario Sunshine you were referring to are the Cataquacks.
Now that we've got Toph's introduction out of the way... All aboard the pain train express! Destination, your feels!
I like how you notice the consistency with Toph's blindness and psudosight.
Yes, Finally TOPH!! I Love her so much, my favorite character. I love the clear movements of her earthbending. Nice to see that you are so exited about her too :)
necroing, but i love this show and this character. the fact she's so competent that the gaang constantly FORGET that she's blind
By far, one of my favorite cjaracters, only second to sokka (the development of the characters is crazy)
Best girl is finally here. My fav character of the show.
Yesssssssssssss its finally here!!!!!!!!!! 😁 still loving all your reactions and i hope you're feeling better 😄
Yay!! It’s Best Girl🎉🎉
YES YES YES YES YES YES FINALLY THE GOAT, THE GOATTTTT
With Katara and the two boys in the alley I imagine that she tried being diplomatic at first, but they were being hostile jerks so she decided to throw down.
Toph is Tough!
Fun fact from a visually impaired person: Blind people actually use techniques similar to Toph's, but rather with echolocation through snapping and tounge-clicking instead. I met such a person myself. It was amazing. She Snapped her fingers once or twice and could tell me "over there is a table, there a bed, there a door, ..." And I couldn't ask or wish for a better representation for blind people and (as you saw by now) inclusion done right! I'm on a binge of your videos on both channels atm anyway so I can't wait to see your further reactions to her!
Toph's earth bending style is based on Southern Praying Mantis instead of the Hung Gar based style by most earth benders. This is because her style favors more foot movement, which is crucial for her to be able to "see". There is also an implication that this is a more pure form of earth bending as she is leagues above far more experienced earth benders.
I just love how aang comes out of the box like he's ready to fight but sokka stop he likes she got this
Toph is here!
When i was younger and watching her I was in awe. There is this tiny blind girl, but she’s so amazingly strong and independent!
Her blindness wasn’t portrayed as a weakness, but as one of her greatest strength.
6:00 "He kinda chunky. Love that for him, you stay thicc King."
I feel...very noticed now.
It's so refreshing reliving the series with you! I haven't watch this series what feels like 10 years. So I'm getting hype remembering the scenes with you and i''m like YESSS! Toph and Iroh are my top 2 characters. She's such a good character, with a goated introduction.
Comments for the algorithm god! Clicks for the engagement throne! Thanks for the video.
12:00 OOOOOOOHHHH!!! WHY DID I FELT THAT!?
Been waiting SO HARD for this episode! And if the next one is already in the can, then, you know, that one, too. :) Absolutely LOVE your reactions! I'm SO glad I discovered your channel near the beginning of your ATLA journey. ❣
I love waking up to these. It's become part of my morning routine.
Something i always love about how Toph earthbends, is how precise she is, Bumi is unusual and eccentric, a lot other earth benders are also rough and more defensive, meanwhile Toph is precise and more aggresive than others
23:15
Toph: YOU THINK YOU'RE SO TOUGH?!
WHY DONT YOU COME UP HERE SO I CAN WIPE THAT GRIN OFF YOUR FACE? >:[
Xin "Fool":..........am not smiling.... -_-
He's the Rock because he's an earth bender 🤣
Toph is the GOAT. And I mean the actual greatest of all time when I say that. She is a true master, unlike Aang and Katara who are still learning. The strongest member of team avatar has arrived.
Well, Aang is an airbending master. You get the tattoos upon mastery, not just because they look cool.
@@isaacevilman7586 then aang toph>katara sokka
Every "Favorite Avatar Character" Poll comes down to Toph and Iroh. Every Single Time!
17:22 I'm sure the player took it in stride seeing how they're a fan of the show and know it pretty well.
I love your reactions it’s very genuine and fun and hilarious. Keep up the vids and I’ll keep up the likes!
The Boulder was voiced by Mick Foley, AKA Dude Love AKA Cactus Jack AKA Mankind
“The boulder really likes this reaction video”
Yep, The Boulder is completely inspired by The Rock, and they even tried to get him to voice the character but it didn't work out, so they got another wrestler and friend of Dwayne, Mick Foley.
Randomly stumbled upon this video and now I'm completely hooked. I gotta start from episode 1
Toph may be baby
*but she’s the strongest baby*
5:00 Oh it wasn't for no reason. She don't tolerate people talking to HER avatar like that lmao xD
Toph is actually the best character in the series
The next episode is arguably the best in the show. Whether you agree or not after seeing it, you're gonna love it.
Bruh listen to the intro, she posts an episode ahead on patreon.
@@natezabinski5615 What does this change about my comment?
I am so hyped... I AM SO HYPED!!!
@@Spherrum Because you said "you're gonna love it." when she already watched it.
LOVE this!!
I found you a little while ago. And once I saw that you were already on this episode. I just *had* to binge all the reactions to get to this point
Toph for life!
ps: fun fact. The Beifong family is the first instance of any character having a last name in this show
The ground pound level you're talking about is Gelato Beach btw. And those duck things I believe are called.. PLungellos?
Such a great episode
"What's this baby's name?"
TOPH BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE TOUGH!
Toph and THE BOULDER!!!! YESSS :D
Woooo let’s go this is going to be awesome :)
