Unfortunately, I think it is a matter of time and attrition for Ukraine to lose the war unless Europe decides to get involved directly. And I'm not talking NATO. I'm talking about the European countries individually getting involved out of self-defense because you can either defeat them now or Ukraine's not the last step they're going to be taking. General. It's the same thing that I was saying back in 2014 when Russia took the Ukraine and people called me all kinds of names when I said it but I said you're stupid if you think that Russia is going to stop here. They're going to take the rest of Ukraine and then they're going to use their leverage points with Belarus and Kalinengrad to attempt to take some of the Baltic states There was the Eastern European states. Now that would be a violation of NATO. But we can tread that line very carefully by the European countries individually and specifically saying not under the auspices of NATO, getting involved to help stop them in Ukraine. And that means, yes, send troops.
Russia is allied obviously with Iran and China. At the root of all of this I believe is China. China wants Russia to break Europe in Eastern Europe because it takes the ball off of them and then they can take Taiwan and eventually South Korea. Act, right? Or China may wait for Russia to degrade their own abilities and deplete their own troops, and then China either overtly or covertly is going to take a large part of Russia, including Siberia, because they need the living room and the resources.
So ultimately, this is a proxy war with Iran and China.
Let’s hope America and NATO have the guts to see it through. Ceding Ukraine to Russia will mean war in Europe when Putin attacks Poland… and he will attack Poland if he takes Ukraine. I know the right wing talking heads don’t want us to know that but it will happen.
When I was training to be a Russian linguist, the Cold War was still very much a thing and it seemed it would always be. Then, when the Wall fell and the Soviet Union went away, like most people heavily invested in learning to fight a war against the USSR, I greeted the ‘end’ of the Cold War with an odd mix of stunned disbelief and cautious joy. Still, I knew that the previous 70-odd years of communism in Russia - and, for that matter, most of Russia’s imperialistic history - wasn’t going to just vanish in a puff of pixie dust. When Putin took over, in one of my rare moments of history-inspired prescience, I saw him for what he is: A Stalin-wannabe, a KGB-bred thug who is the same old autocrat wearing a different disguise. It’s all a sad rerun, a classic Russian tale of the wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing proving his vulpine truth and daring the world to do something about it. Will Captain Kelly’s wish for a different, better Russia come true? Maybe someday, but I won’t hold my breath waiting for it.

@@dankelly2147 I concur, and the thing is, in these modern times of communication what with the internet and all kinds of advanced and secretive, under the rable type listening devices, etc., I guess it's just a very major "hands down" with the overall non-military and non-law enforcement Russian population that pretty much wipes out the hope of freedom and democracy for Russia. A damned shame really, and the same for China. And then there's that supposed secret, international and under the table group of the very rich and communist leaning that supposedly meet secretively each year up in Norway or some country within that general area, that are 100% against democracy and freedom that lean towards a future world government! All I can say to that concept is "Fat F'n Chance" as far as having such approved in These United States!!

Learn about opportunity cost. Every once of steel and hours of skilled labor used to make a shell for the Ukraine could go into making something useful for us. New girders for bridges, wind turbine blades, etc
How about this : The opportunity cost of spending $ to restrain Russia now will be dwarfed by $$$ spent trying to do the same 10 or 20 years from now.
Or, how about an example from history:
Compare & contrast ...
1. The cost of stopping Hitler when he was invading Czechoslovakia.
2. The cost of stopping Hitler after he invaded Poland, France, & Russia.
Thank you for posting this sir. It's nice to get information from what I consider a trustworthy, and experienced source.
Ward is a bright guy, with a great channel and very interesting guests. I just wish he would tighten his questions. Instead he adds layer on layer of questions, which then turns into non-sequiturs with the original question lost in the muddle. Hopefully he rewatches and studies his videos and can learn to be a bit more precise. Advice offered with best intentions.

@@WardCarroll I actually think your content and interview questions are very good. Your style of reporting keeps the interest of the viewer. Or at least this one. I would like to see your style of reporting and fact finding/reporting in the broader media. If the 60 minutes journalists would report their stories in this style, 60 minutes would be watchable again.
I can see your point, but I prefer Ward's quest for a full, nuanced understanding. Short; "tidy narratives" as Ward calls them, have their place ... but I like Ward's desire to get the full info.
As much as I enjoy your channel, these discussions about Ukraine are simply frightening, it is incredible to hear 2 military guys, who were spared the Vietnam disaster, talk about the slaughter of Ukrainian youth as if you were playing a game of Stratego. You sound like dimestore Robert McNamara acolytes. Crimea was given up without a shot many years ago, this European "domino theory" is absurd. And at no point during this entire conversation did you talk about the Europeans. "If we don't do it who's going to do it?". what, is the entire eat you a vassal state to the United States? What happened to Ukraine is unbelievably tragic, and absolute failure of Western deterrence. You talk about the American public with a certain level of disdain, we spent 20 years in Afghanistan., Perhaps we all remember that in the unbelievable waste of the best of us. and lastly and most importantly you both talk about defining victory like it's some sort of novel idea. Have you not learned anything from the last 80 years of our military history? I remain scratching my head at the cold, simplistic, arrogant attitude. Perhaps if your sons or daughters were dying over there you might have a different attitude.

As a fellow Ukrainian, I appreciate and salute every American who understands what’s at stake here and been showing us all the support. It’s a shame to still hear so many around the world fall for the Kremlin narrative of Russia having any sort of historical right over Ukraine. Had Kyiv fallen in Feb 2022, Putin would not have stopped there. He made it clear that his intention is to “reclaim the lands of the USSR that rightfully belong to Russia”. Let’s remember how those warmongering hosts on the Russian TV talk shows dismissed Ukraine’s ability to fight back, they were confident that Ukraine will be subdued within a few days, and that the real question becomes “should Russia take back what is rightfully theirs from Finland”. They were saying this on national TV, shamelessly. That’s what we are dealing with, this is the reality of Russia.
I don’t care what Putin thinks. We didn’t want nukes in Cuba, and I frankly I don’t blame Putin being a bit touchy with sharing a long border with historical disputes that we should stay out of.

Zelensky signed peace deal on Feb 24th(26th?) until Boris Johnson informed all involved that the war was still on, regardless of whatever Zelensky nor Ukranians had to say about it.

Ukraine was an independent nation before being conquered by the Soviet Union and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal on the promise of protection by the U.S. and Europe. Putin had no legitimate reason to invade Ukraine and his actions not only strengthened the ties of the world's democracies, it caused two previously neutral nations to join NATO.

Scott's story about his friends mother's perspective, is a prime example of the information warfare battle that the US has been fighting for years. The Cyber and Information battlespace is not being focused on enough by any media. IMO, we are in 'combat' now, just not with the traditional tools/weapons. And Russian

Western democracies need a quasi-public agency to monitor and grade news sources for honesty and accuracy. There's been a problem for years with Russian, Chinese, Iranian... disinformation and it will just get worse with AI. People need to know if their information is coming from a good source.
NATO wanting to put a million man NATO force on Russias western border is not worth a nuclear apocalypse. It is clear NATO provoked the conflict, The United States would never allow Russia to stage a million soldiers on our border., why would we expect Russia to accept this? We’ve known for 30 years this was a redline for Russia and decided to push for it anyway. Ukraine needs to be a neutral country.

I think part of the issue is that many of the American people can’t connect HOW exactly Russia could possibly play out as a potential enemy of the US and Western allies. Elected leaders need to quit being politically ambiguous and scared and actually call a spade a spade and draw it out, connecting the dots for the people in a way that will resonate. We’ve been so desensitized to the realities of the world because of modern luxury both political and material, the thought of a global war type of enemy threat is basically not possible in thought. Either brief the people with the real information that highlights WHY and HOW our potential future enemies are just that, in a way that doesn’t divulge national technological secrets, or pay the price politically when people don’t support it.
Russia is an enemy because our leaders made sure to make them an enemy over the last 30 years. We could have had peace, we can still choose peace.
Russians aren't my enemy but a certain ethnic group from the pale is still mad about the czar and will do anything they can to destroy them

Unfortunately, the same "piecemeal approach" we took fighting the Vietnam War is being used here with Ukraine's fight against Russia, and will result in Ukraine losing much of its southeastern and eastern territory to Russia or losing the war altogether.
The sad truth is that we learned nothing from Viet Nam and haven't won a war in 79 years.

I've disagreed strongly with the ways diplomacy was done from the end of the Cold War until now and also the way the war support has been conducted. I have the same criticisms as John Mearsheimer. I won't go into the duplicitous diplomacy; however, anybody could look at the population and equipment and production capabilities, and if they gave a sh*t about Ukrainian lives, they would either have told them to surrender, or they would have provided them the equipment and a volunteer mercenary air force using aircraft scheduled for the boneyard to achieve a quick victory. They chose to convince them they would be supported. Okay, great. At that point, the WORST thing possible for Ukrainian (and Russian for that matter) lives and the Ukrainian war effort was to convince them that they were going to get support, but then to slow roll the effort piecemeal, so that they would become involved in another attritional war, Russia would gain advantage, and the American people would suspect they were being asked to support an endless proxy war. So that's exactly what they did. Now, the whole thing has been handled as stupidly and as costly as possible, in regards to human life, to Ukrainian territory, to tax dollars, and to US political division. Now that we are here, way down the line of costly mistakes, get the damn thing over with by whichever method you choose; but commit to it. The Ukrainians don't have the population to handle another draft after this one.

So what does the US need to improve for the next big fight? I can tell you: be able to produce mass amounts of ammunition and weapons quickly. Modern wars consume inordinate amount of material. The US must ramp up its production capabilities asap because it is not ready for a near-peer conflict.

Most people don't understand that sending only such amount of weapons and at the same time weakening a potential threat without firing a shot or getting shot at, is already a win-win scenario.
Nice spin. He says that's NOT our tax dollars going to Ukraine. Its US companies building those weapons and that pays employees to work there. But ummmm, who gave the companies the money to manufacture the weapons? The US taxpayer did. One of those major Ukraine payments of weapons went over there the same month the people of Maui got a few hundred dollars each after they lost everything in a wild fire including many of their lives. It was an insult to those Hawaiians. This is a classic spin of disguising the taxpayer is funding the military industrial complex. These constant wars are just generating money for companies. I really like Ward's reporting and I'm a subscriber but this the astronaut saying this is NOT our taxpayer money? That is a lie. And he knows that.

With respect to Capt Kelly's perspective, it's every taxpayers right to demand accountability for our government's spending. I would agree that most American's who don't agree with sending support to Ukraine are possibly uninformed, however they are not "wrong" because they feel that way. The idea of supporting Ukraine is not altruistic, there is a greater reality to this.

Very interesting conversation. One thing that doesn't add up to me, though, was the statement that the weapons we are sending to Ukraine are ones that are about to expire and are scheduled for replacement anyway. The implication is that we would be spending that money anyway to replenish them. But isn't that sort of expiry / replenishment already in the existing DoD budget? So why do we need additional spending bills to pay for it?

It’s unlikely that such replacement costs come into the budget until they’re absolutely required AND congress agrees that the need is acute. This need to supply Ukraine forces the issue. Doesn’t change what is happening, just makes it happen now instead of kicking the can down the road.

Short answer…he’s lying!
Much of the expired stock was extended past expiration dates because the replacements weren’t funded by Congress. The entire ATACMS stockpile for example. Now replacements are on the way because of this funding surge. Even if there had not been a war in Ukraine we would be behind in replenishment and modernization efforts. With the aid we have been able to bring some lost industrial capacity back online and caught up on some long deferred necessary spending to prepare the US military for a major conflict. A lot of that deferment was because of transfer of funds to priority areas in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which are not all the same as what would be needed in a war with a near peer adversary such as China or Russia. Sending our cold war surplus to Ukraine is helping us to reset back to a balanced force.

It really sickens me how so many manufacturing sources can’t keep up with production now. Many, many of us said over the past few decades these massive spindowns of capabilities was a really, really bad idea, but we did it anyways.
Reminds me of the space I’m in, cyber, 2+ decades ago we said how things would go, we were broadly ignored, and now… Well, we’re still generally ignored until something bad happens. Best part is when it does, we’re ALWAYS the scapegoat, we joke (sort of) that the title CISO means “Career Is Soon Over”.

The answer to what Russia is thinking is that they do not want US weapons being used in attacking Russian soil. It is not that shocking. The US should just allow the use of US weapons on military targets in Russia.
The issue is that most people just don't really understand the world. The fact is that it is so strange that people in the US see Russia as the good guys and other folks see Hamas as the good guys. They are what the USSR called "Useful idiots."
I don’t think we in the US see the Russians or Hamas as “good guys”. The small majority that do get in the news. We also don’t like the idea of a proxy war but attacking Russia would make it a “hot war” just as if they attacked us. No one wants that. What amazes me personally is the US-Afghan conflict. Russia got worn down and so did we because of the rules of engagement. We look weak. If Russia couldn’t accomplish a damn thing in there over 13 years.. what would we accomplish?
I agree. My biggest concern with Ukraine is our budget problems and the fact that there is no strategy to win this war, and frankly I have doubts that the five sided building in Northern Virginia has anyone capable of putting forth such a strategy. This is going to take some strength of character and boldness and the Pentagon seems to be teeming with political hacks worried about their pensions.

I think the prevalent sentiment is that the US is tired of being in proxy wars and losing. By directly attacking Russia it shifts from a proxy war to a real war. I suggest you go back, as I just did, to listen to Eisenhower’s entire farewell message to the country and see how well we’ve responded to his insights and opinions after 8 years in office. We need to be strong but clear in focus.

Also we built these weapons to fight the Soviet Union on the ground where Ukraine fights today. It's a good way to decommission these weapons. My attitude is Putin can escalate at his peril.

The ability to attack targets in Russia can be used by Russia when they intermingle their staging areas with the civilian population. It's a lose-lose situation.. but Ukraine has no real choice.

What you both are forgetting is how Washington was proven wrong by both World Wars, when our policy was neutrality until we were ultimately dragged into a European War regardless of what we wanted, and in the case of Eisenhower's farewell address- I mean, the MIC made twenty times as much cash in the GWOT, and won't come close to even making as much a profit as you'd think on this war. Turns out that a major peer conflict where the focus isn't so much making a profit, but also military necessity of destroying a nation's conventional military with weapons the US doesn't rely on/make the biggest profit on (Artillery isn't our specialty, Airpower is) isn't profitable when compared to getting the US Military hooked on multi year contracts. So, you're both wrong, and Eisenhower's speech doesn't hold a lot of weight in this war's context, and Washington's view is just out of date. Sorry lads.

It's interesting how identical twin brothers, raised the same, both Military, can have such differing opinions on world events. The real problem I have is why humanity continues to kill each other over "stuff" (insert whatever resource). Why is it that the explanation that Capt. Kelly gave about the aid package benefitting us as much as Ukraine is not expressed by the Administration or those in congress who are seeking approval of it? I have not heard anywhere in the press either liberal or conservative about the how US arms companies would benefit. What would be the reason for them not telling us this?
I have heard the president clarify that the larger portion of support for Ukraine is actually delivered back to U.S. manufacturers. Should he mention it more? I think so.
If they were addressing the absolute mess of homelessness, the boarder, and cost of healthcare, then people wouldn't have so much to complain about. If you work for an arms manufacturer it's great though

I vividly remember being 8 years old during the Cuban Missile Crisis and wearing dog tags which I realized later were to identify my body if I was killed ,injured or lost. I grew up terrified of the USSR and nuclear mutual destruction. I have been amazed how inept the Russian Armed Forces.

The space station has to near the end of it's useful life, space, even lower earth orbit is still a pretty hostile environment, is the station still providing useful data and research? If this thing is close to the end of it's designed life, just evacuate it and aim it into the Pacific ocean and free up a lot of money that can be used on other space projects.

I particularly was impressed by his unwavering support to Ukraine and him destroying Russian propagandists on Twitter. He's putting his money where is mouth is and this is absolutely crucial for the general public to see such well honorable people giving full support to the Ukrainian people. Humans are masters of task-switching, but not so much parallel multi-processing. The problem I see with DoD is that they are being given a dangerously large number of simultaneous items to process without being given more items with which to process those items. Yeah I saw the thumbnail and was so scared it would be some Putinist fatalistic whine. Then I saw who the UA-camr was and watched it. Not disapointed! Slava Ukraine!
I went and got my passport and various other requirements and I have been 5 months trying to get some organization or person to meet up with to help guide me. I can't get any help. I'm willing to go over and do volunteer work but nobody will help me. Online, I have seen so many international people give up trying, or some go over on their own because so many armchair experts tell them that is the only way to get hired.
I just had a personal friend try that. He said he was put on a 'base'. It was simply a few secluded bombed buildings and the guys put tents inside them. Some official came every day and dropped off C-rations. There was no running water, no plumbing, You had to shi+ in an outhouse. He sat like this for almost 3 months and he had to return to the states because of an expiring Visa.
