K is like saying "over" or "end of message". It also implies that the sender is ready to recieve a reply if warranted. However, it does not necessarily mean that the sender is asking a question. The letter K signal goes back to the days of the telegraph.

The real reason goes back to the corrupt days of Tammany Hall and the feud between NYC Tammany Democrats and upstate NY Republicans. Prior to the Civil War, New York's fire companies were also neighborhood political clubs, all of them beholden to Tammany Hall. (named after Tammany's “Boss" Tweed), which returned control of the NYC Fire Department to New York City's government. That charter created the FDNY, using that rearranged acronym, since they couldn’t repeat the
    older volunteer-era “NYFD.”
Upstate Republicans sought to rein in Tammany Hall, so in 1865, the then-volunteer city-controlled fire department (NYFD) was abolished by a State act, creating the paid Metropolitan Fire District and Department. The real reason goes back to the corrupt days of Tammany Hall and the feud between NYC Tammany Democrats and upstate NY Republicans. Tammany Hall would get its revenge fifteen years later under the Tweed Charter (named after Tammany's “Boss" Tweed), which returned control of the NYC Fire
Department to New York City's government. That charter created the FDNY, using that rearranged acronym, since they couldn’t repeat the older volunteer-era “NYFD.”

Keep up the good work fellas!. I really enjoy your podcast. You tell it like it is ! Which is something I think is missing in the fire service today.

FDNY came into existence after the consolidation of the boroughs into the City of New York, under a single unified command, and as a result of the Tweed Charter, in 1898. Richmond (Staten Island) became part of the City at the same time. I'm guessing NY FD referred specifically to Manhattan. Love the show and your merch.

Teaching history responses were good. Hard to transform from how I was brought up since 1988. Now guys would complain how I was treated and taught. Unfortunately a lot of great instructors were lost because of how things have transformed to “safe spaces”. It’s not like it used to be. I hate when in a class and an instructor I don’t know adds and lady or woman. I tell them Not to treat me different. Treating me different upsets me. I’m a firefighter.

Would like to see you re-issue the "Stay Low and Go" shirt like Kevin was wearing. It's a classic, but no longer available.

K means you expect a response or looking for an answer.
