- Our special guest will be 41 year FDNY veteran Chief of Department Tom Richardson. Chief Richardson joined the FDNY in 1980. His first assignment was at Engine Company 227 in Brooklyn, and he later worked at Ladder Company 102 and Rescue Company 2, also in Brooklyn. In 1990, he was promoted to Lieutenant and worked in Battalion 16 in Harlem for a year before returning to Brooklyn when he was assigned to Engine Company 235 in Bedford Stuyvesant. He was promoted again in 1994 and served as the Captain of Engine Company 234 in Crown Heights and later of Squad Company 270 in Queens. In September of 2000, he was promoted to Battalion Chief.
He has been cited for bravery six times in his career, including for the rescue of a 15-year-old boy from a fire in Brooklyn on January 10, 1989. At that incident, Firefighter Richardson was lowered by his lifesaving rope from the roof of a three-story brownstone on Monroe Street and rescued the teenager who was trapped by a fire. He was awarded the Dr. Albert A. Cinelli Medal for his heroic actions. The last response of his career was among the most tragic, Chief of Department Richardson responded Sunday, January 9, 2022, to a five-alarm high-rise fire in the Bronx that left 17 people dead, including eight children, with numerous other victims badly injured.
Chief Richardson is a 2010 graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School - Center for Homeland Defense and Security, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Security Studies. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE episode. A wealth of information. What a career. To be a member of a legendary rescue company is remarkable.
Great show. I've known Tommy since he became a fireman in Deer Park, he and I were Probie's together. Tommy and I were fortunate enough to have Lt. Vig of R2 and Larry Cannillo of 82 Engine as our mentors when Tommy and I were daytime firefighters in DP. Tommy was an overnight custodian at Smithtown General Hospital and I was an overnight Fire Dispatcher for the Town of Babylon. I loved his Dad. A great, great Chief. Tommy's Mom was a beautiful women who had the patients of a saint. One day I'd love to tell the story about Tommy's Dad at a working fire in Deer Park. I'd also love to tell my Lt. Vigiano story about a job we had in DP. My wife Vita and I was honored to go to Tommy and Julie's Wedding which was a blast. I have a story about that too. My wife and I were also honored to have them at my Wedding. He's a beautiful person, and yes, Tommy certainly married up. Julie is a gem.

i had the honor of having Chief Richardson as my instructor in volley probie school out in Suffolk county, had no idea who he was until later on, such a down to earth guy! couldn't have asked for a better person to learn from. thank you Chief!!

Remember cause i was there,the companys east and south were going to fires,and turned out agressively,and were already specialists at putting out private dwellings,most of the work in that area,Squad arrives, and had lets just say some issues with getting a hydrant and assisting with stretches, over all good bunch of guys who wanted to go to fires,and much respect to Chief Richardson
I just have to say when Tommy (Chief Richardson) says how calm the Lt was strikes a chord ! The best Capt I ever worked with was Capt Gannon Engine Co. 249 ! Capt. Gannon was always calm , didn’t matter if the shit was hitting the fan he always spoke in the same tone , calm , cool and collective! That shit creates an environment of confidence and you can focus on getting the job done ! Good bosses make good Companies! Gotta learn in the trenches! Congrats Chief !
