I drove a car for the last 10 years, no armrest. You get use to it after a while. Never have I ever not been able to get somewhere because I didn't have an armrest. lol
Great review! Have owned both a manual and auto Mazda 2hatchback and they are capable vehicles that are a blast to drive around town. Virtually no body roll in cornering. Long trips with the car can be a bit tiresome, but for the money, you can't beat it.
upsawol as former owner of a 2017 Yaris iA (yes same car different name), 30k miles driven , and current owner of a 2020 Rio (Accent twin) with 6000 current mikes driven, here are my observations: the Yaris has safer manual joystick radio and menu controls that can be operated without the distractions of a touch screen (touch only works when fully stopped); the Yaris gets up to 3mpg more on long road trips but both easily hit 43mpg (much less in city driving or for short drives due to the warmup penalty); my Yaris sounded like an angry vacuum cleaner at medium to high throttle; my Yaris had a very harsh ride but better than average straight tracking, even In crosswinds while the Rio was over sensitive in no winds and twitchy in crosswinds until I changed to BFG TA tires; Rio ride is supple but more body lean. Yaris feels posh like a Mini (but not gaudy) and the Rio feels like a rental car (the Accent is much nicer). Overall the Yaris is premium and the Rio is much cheaper. I continue to worry about intake valve deposits build up in all GDI cars. The Hyundai Kia warranties are great peace of mind.
Great video. I just bought one a couple of weeks ago and am in love. It’s zippy, fits everything I need. I traded in a VW Tiguan. Most of my previous cars have been hatchbacks. One was even a two seater. It has everything I need and I’m one that loves the look.
Had the previous version original egg, mid and this and this one is EXCELLENT especially with the LED headlights etc! This makes one of the BEST used options today:)
@@zipper978 I also hate the fact that they sell you crap you don't really need like lane keep assist and rain sensing wipers. What? You can't look out your window?
@@jvera828 Yeah, too much technology that really is unnecessary. The wires and complex technology you put in a vehicle, the more opportunities that exist of something eventually malfunctioning.
No armrest? Near the screen controller wheel there is a little rest, if you place your wrist on it your arm recognizes it as a arm rest, try it. I regret not looking under the hood when I purchased this vehicle. I HATE that it's a Mazda. It's a beautiful vehicle because it takes me from point A to point B. It's good in fuel, if you have kids DO NOT get this vehicle, the backseat is not enough leg room. If you have no interest to bring anyone in your car or just enough space for one passenger, you're broke and you need an affordable dependable vehicle this is a great purchase.
Happy to have a Mazda 2 hatchback available, really disappointing only in automatic. You would think that it would be less expensive: it’s been in production for a while, built in Mexico... not really a Toyota. Seems like Toyota is having its cake and eating it too. Just another European offering you can pine over.
Kia Rio had leatherette on some special additions, but no longer available in the US. So that leaves the VW Jetta and Mazda 3, but they only have it on mid-level trims that are much more expensive than the Yaris XE. Back in the 1970s, most economy cars had leatherette as standard, but then cloth became more popular.
They put a 1.5 liter turbo in the Chevy Malibu! These days they put dinky 4 cyl. Engines in cars and turbo the shite out of them so the car can actually move!! Engine wears out fast too! That is why this naturally aspirated engine is nice!
I don't see Toyota's implication in this. Other than a different face and badges, this is 95% a Mazda2. Funny how you can have 4 different cars (Yaris, 85, Supra vs let's say a Corolla or Camry) with the same Toyota badge but who are completely different from each other, have different infotainment and so on... Oh, and you forgot the Rio as a competitor, which is a great little car
A sport mode which as far as I can tell doesn’t do pretty much anything 😂. And wow u r 6 ft and still fit inside. 👍 Im interested in this car but the sedan as a daily driver
I actually liked this car as well. It didn't seem to struggle to accelerate. He talked well while driving but, in Sport mode not much was said, not his fault, the steering feel changed but I didn't notice much difference either when he kept driving. Seems like a nice car. Still deciding.
GREAT REVIEW, & I have researched a lot of vehicles & find this to be top notch. Have to say I do not desire to drive a LEXUS or MERCEDES😬.....nor would I want that kind of payment.
I don’t know why they keep calling this a Toyota Yaris when in reality it is a Mazda 2 with a Toyota label, a model that is over 5 years old. Toyota is trying to trick people telling them it’s a new Yaris. Meanwhile the UK gets the real Toyota Yaris 2020. I don’t know why Toyota is doing this with Mazda and the new Supra BMW. The commercial says “Keep moving forward” but instead they are moving backwards, so sad. Thank you Toyota for cutting corners. 👎🏼👎🏼

It drives like a nimble larger car- quiet, smooth revving, perfect steering. It's a joy to own.
Did you consider/test drive any other vehicles? I'm torn between the Yaris and the Hyundai Accent.

@@MichaelWebber Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm glad to hear there wasn't anything horrible about either.
Its mazda 2 underneath so all credit goes to mazda they make brilliant cars
There is a real Toyota Yaris out here in europe. It's even as a hybrid and base for WRC Rallye Car.
I agree!

For 17K, I'd rather get a used Corolla or Civic.
Exactly these companies are selling sub compact cars at an insane price. this car brand new should be like 13000 dollars

i prefer the styling on this.
corolla new is good value. but i dont like the styling and i prefer the yaris infotainment on premium.
@@asad5067 The Corolla hatch looks gross. Meanwhile, Europe get the Yaris GR
You neglected to mention the Mirage
Why not give it an armrest. That alone is a deal breaker. They could at least add a folding one connected to the driver seat like the Chevrolet Spark
The best Yaris version to me

My iA manual got 49 mpg average mixed driving, amazing!
How did you do it? 55mph fwy on 6th gear? Shift early? Go on Neutral when going downhill?

I don't mind that it looks like darn Mazda. However, is the engine, transmission, and every bit of technology in it of japanese quality?? 🤔
100% Japanese quality
Is this the cheapest new car that offers leatherette seating?

Does the Yaris five door hatch have a CVT automatic or a traditional automatic?
1 BIGGUN traditional 6 speed auto
It looks like the Mazda 2
Takes half an hour in the Winter to get decent heat.
just press the gas more and boom all heated in 10 minutes lol
The sheer cost is surprising. I'd rather have a Civic, I think... or, like, seven Ford Crown Victorias.
That’s a Mazda 2
Yes, and it's the 2014-5 Japan Car of the Year winner.
You’re sooo cute ☺️

A shame that the market for subcompacts has shrunk so much. The Mazda2/Yaris needs 25 more horsepower

It’s a shame they don’t just sell this as the Mazda 2. The styling on the 2020 is so much better.
I watched some reviews for the Mazda 2 2020 after your comment....OMG....why can't we have THAT model!?
My brain can’t stand it. Looks like somebody placed aftermarket bumber on Mazda 2

How big and ugly the front grill of the 2020 Yaris. I wish you can tell the bosses of Toyota Motors USA to use the front end design of Asian Yaris.
Just get the new Corolla with a 6MT and enjoy Toyota build quality and reliability
I like how the Mitsubishi Mirage isn’t even mentioned lol

the lexus 250 is crap i believe.
I have a Mazda 2 2012. 80k almost. Perfect car.
The sport mode allows higher RPM’s before shifting to the next gear!!
Game changer!! Toyota is just killing it! Good job! ✅✅✅👌👌👌

What about the Honda Fit not being mentioned? It has a better engine and more fun to drive.
@Jonathan Losito consumer reports only recommends fit and yaris. kia rio only has average reliability. they have tons of complaints about it.
