When Mary was "on," her timing was truly impeccable. She had the ability to hit the ball squarely on the sweet spot of her racket which produced ridiculously unmatched power, especially on her backhand. It is something that can't be taught.
Such straight backed elegance Mary had, contrasting with bone crunching power. When she fully unloaded on her shots I tell you walls could have been knocked through. It's ironic that the French booed her, because she was so French in her aura. Just always looked impeccable. Whereas these days she's a spectacled hippy, still looking lovely but in a very christian socks, sandals and guitar sort of way. Love Mary, such a character.
The lovely and beautiful Mary Pierce... so underrated and discredited. To this day, I don't know why she still hasn't been inducted to the Hall of Fame despite winning multiple grand slams tournaments.
No player shot for shot has ever hit as hard as Mary off the ground. If she was timing the ball well she could beat anyone, even Serena. Took a world of time away from her opponents with those lazer like shots.
@@Mrd9960 it is. “At one time”, “one of the best”. Serena IS THEE BEST. I never disputed she was one of the best. This idea that she’s the hardest hitter off the ground of all time is pure delusion. Nobody hits harder than Serena off the ground. Both Venus and Davenport hit harder off the ground.
@@JCole-fg3rr Well yeah, not the best of all time, one of the best and no, Serena isn't THEE best, she's one of, its disputable, there's been so many greats that have played the game, you can't say she's the best, that's disrespecting Graf, Navratilova, Evert, Monica Seles.
Mary was playing great tennis. The camera doesnt always pick up how heavy the ball is that mary hits. Most women struggle to deal with it. Its not just a fast ball theres so much weight behind it. Serena wasnt her best but mary was hitting pure controlled power. Not many tennis players can do that consistently
Would have been amazing to watch these two if they both were on fire. I reckon mary and serena were and are the biggest hitters shot for shot. When asked who hits the heaviest ball a few players have said serena and mary
I've been on court with both of them and I would say not. Lindsay Davenport and Conchita Martinez hit some of the heaviest balls. However, Serena and Mary hit some ou'd the hardest balls.
Yeah. and that was 1994, Graf was just coming from a non calendar grand slam. She wasn't at her very best, but wasn't at a low either like in 1997. No one had overpowered her like that before, especially on the forehand side. Mary's shots that day made Graf's forehand look like a "normal" shot... Of course it was only that day. Had Pierce played like that consistently, she'd have won 15 slams and not 2...
Remember watching this, I don't think she'd have lost to anyone that day. She was on fire, so sad she got injured. Serena's ground shots have become something special since back then.
Thank you sooo much for this! Both are top 2 of my favorites tennis players! I have always been amazed at how Mary used to strike the ball... Do you notice that she almost never hit twice in the same zone? And when I look at that match, Serena plays a lot like this nowadays. With, calm, time, power, precision. Thanks again so much!
Yeah, as a Graf fan I find their 94 FO match so fascinating. Obviously Graf didn't have her best day (she would have had to have one of her top 10 that day to win probably) but to see her simply and utterly overpowered is like watching superman lose an armwrestle to wonderwoman, sure it's possible in theory but you just don't expect to ever see it... Even Serena and Venus couldn't push Graf around the way Pierce did that day.
You can see how heavy the ball is from Mary off the ground..not just fast but a lot of clout behind it. That's what made her deadly when she was on. She hit more like the guys consistently and most WTA players couldn't deal with that. Her mixed doubles final at Wimbledon was incredible...she was passing the bloke at the net with ease!
That's the beauty about Mary's game. When it was on, she was unbeatable. She posted some of the greatest wins against top players like Graf FO94, or Seles +Hingis FO2000. Some of her runs through tournaments were crazy like her 2000 Charleston campaign or 1995 AO win. But when her game was off, what a pain to watch... That's why she has won only 2 slams. She has a lot more in her but was inconsistent.
Serena was a mess, but Pierce playing with great precision and with impeccable serving. Also, two of the greatest fashion statements of the 21st century :P
Bonjour à tous. S'il vous plait quelqu'un peut il mettre ce match (Serena Williams vs Mary Pierce 1/4 Final Indian Wells 2000) en entier en ligne et me tenir au courant? Merci d'avance.
@rangerover1961 sorry - what I meant to say was Serena didn't stand a chance that day because Mary was mentally and physically there. Not that any player mentally and physically there would beat Serena. That would just be silly. Didn't mean to get you so worked up!
@ folieatois You saying the ONLY way Serena won was successful is IF the OTHER player was off her game? If that were the case then WHY did Serena have winning records against ALL of the top players of her day, PLUS she IS the best of her generation PERIOD and hands down which INCLUDED all of those great players like Davenport, Hingis, Henin, Pierce, Mauresmo, Clijsters, Capriati, Sharapova & her OWN sister Venus. Serena @ her advancing age is STILL the best player out there going into 2014. OF course she has less time of dominance left in her career, but saying that IF the other player was playing great Serena didn't have a chance is dead WRONG. Proof is in the pudding: Serena with a few more slams will be in the discussion of GOAT.
It's such a shame Mary wasn't more consistent, like she was in this match. She has hammered every big name of her generation when she was mentally there. Like today, Serena didn't stand a chance when the other player is mentally and physically consistent.
@Jermaine Benson: Serena, Venus, Lindsay.... I get what you're trying to say, but there were several players who hit the ball quite hard, shot for shot, other than just Mary.
at 18 a girl is fully developed. did you study medicine and anathomy? i don't think so. you're just Serena's supporters. A body can't grow normally that way from 18 to 32, it's science guys. Idiots...
stevie69ful black bodies? when i wrote that comment i had everything in mind but serena's skin colour. I would have said the same even for a chinese or a german tennis player. you muricans have the race installed in your brain, you'll never get out of it, sadly.
Pierce at her best was brilliant.... the problem is she lacked the athleticism and movement of the modern day big hitters, therefore she was forced into pretty much going for broke on every shot. Also compared to players today her serve wasn't all that special. Interesting to see how much Serena has improve her forehand and second serve over the years too.
Mary's style was always pretty brutal. I think she would still do pretty well against today's big hitters. She combined power with consistency most of the time which is rare nowadays. Her serve was underrated. It had a lot of stick behind it. Also remember she played with a much heavier racket than most of the girls nowadays. So they have added a few more mph to their serve because they play with more powerful rackets and strings. I still think she's in the top 5 hardest hitters of all time without a doubt!
cupidslover3 You are remembering a different MP to me then. I remember someone who was highly inconsistent at best; her rankings were up and down like a yo-yo at times. Mary didn't move well enough and mostly had a losing H2H against the good players around her age I can think of... both Williams, Davenport, Capirati, Seles, Mauresmo, etc. Plus a losing record against the slightly younger ones like Sharapova, Clijsters, Henin.... Then again Venus is a shadow of the player she used to be and she is still in the top 20, so no reason why Mary wouldn't be a top 20 or 30 player today. If you take out Serena it is quite a weak era at the moment.... love or hate her Serena is keeping the WTA tour going at the moment nobody comes close.
MrTheHarderTheyCome yeah but I still think Mary was actually a much more effective hard hitters than the current lot. She was actually way more consistent than a lot of those are with more variety to her game. She played in a much tougher era.
I wouldn't call it a tussle more like a rout :( poor Serena, 2000 really was not a good year for her. Mary played great but Serena was totally off, I don't understand how Mary then lost so easily to Hingis
And another thing, this is Mary Pierce's 1 & Only Win over the Great Serena Williams. Serena is 5 - 1 head to head over Mary Pierce. And everyone of their matches were won or lost in str8 sets. Serena beat Mary on clay & hard courts, again in str8 sets.
SERENA MAY HAVE GOTTEN OWNED HERE BUT, SHE WAS STILL NEW TO THE GAME. SHE MAY HAVE BEEN ON THE CIRCUIT FOR 3 YEARS WHEN THIS MATCH WAS PLAYED.SHE NOW IS THE MOST EXCITING PLAYER, NUMBER ONE PLAYER, AND ARGUABLY GOAT.
the "take that" is a give away, how hateful these anchors were against the Williams sisters In the earlier part of the year, that they dont deserve nor worthy to be winning against White tennis players.
I don't know what most of these comments are trying to imply about Pierce & Serena. Mary had a good day & Serena had a terrible day. Yes, Pierce was a hard, flat ball hitter but she was also a terrible mover & extremely 1 dimensional. To even talk about Pierce in the same sentence with Serena Williams is an insult. Obviously 21 Grand Slams to 2 Grand Slams says it all. No one is going to play 100% every day for an entire career. Mary Pierce played & had a great day vs a great player to be.....Serena Williams & Serena played an awful match & had an obvious bad day. It happens. Now, I'd be more impressed with Pierce if she beat Serena in a semifinal or final of a Grand Slam. Serena was still learning how to win matches let alone big major matches.
with respect Mary was not one dimensional. She had fantastic hands and was actually a great volleyer. she had a lot more to her game than today's current crop of ball bashers. Serena is a far better athlete however and much stronger mentally.
Pierce also played in a tough era with graf, seles, Davenport, capriati, hingis, Williams sisters, mauresmo, henin and clijsters all at their peak. the fact she won two and made four finals was a great achievement
+cupidslover3 No doubt Mary Pierce played in a tougher era & yes she knew how to play tennis but I think you know what I mean. If you think she could do more on a tennis court than alot of today's lady players than you are no different than a lot of these Haters that are trying to say that today's era is weak & that's why Serena is number 1. Yes, that era had alot of great players but so does this era. And Serena Williams is still number 1 because she put in the work, improved her game & seriously became dedicated to tennis.
