It lowers the stakes a lot but thats why it was introduced at the finale of the story. We are at a point where we should not feel that luffy will lose he is no longer the underdog of the story and its the climax. The only fights that NEED stakes and tension should be vs blackbeard (which he wont be able to use gear 5) akainu, and imu. If gear 5 was introduced arcs prior the form lowering the stakes and tension would be significantly detrimental to the story.
See i agree with this take, because you acknowledge the fact that it lowered the stakes even alittle. For me, i loved the tension but can’t disagree with. Id argue the 5 elders fight should have tension too, what do you think?
@@ProjectKARMAI believe so as well that the 5 elders fight should have tension but I also feel as if this is a special case. The goal here for luffy isn’t to beat the 5 elders it’s to escape and the goal for the 5 elders is to stop vegapunks message. This is the first time that the villains instead of the main chars have to adhere to a time limit and are desperate. I do think when luffy fights the gorosei again in another arc it will have more tension.
No G5 is one of the greatest transformation. When main characters get their new mode. It represents growth and determination since most Shonen are come of age stories. I feel like you all are speaking from a perspective where transformations are already established on how it is presented. This is a fresh take on transformation and literally sets it self apart from every other transformation in Shonen. This transformation fits the goofiness of the series as a whole. Think about it how many super intense moments are in this story. Cause tension is always broken in fights, there is always a goofy luffy moment in every fight. As for drawbacks this man is completely immobile when out of G5 not haki to protect himself. Again i feel you are looking at this tranformation as it compare to every other one in anime. When we should look at it from the perspective of the story. G5 is as strong as Luffy's will/haki. ( Luffy not taking kizaru seriously till his friends are in danger) Luffy and Bonnie powers work very similarly the only real difference is Luffy powers arent just confined to time, the only real way to beat G5 is to make Luffy stop dreaming This is the last transformation or he will lose the fruit one of these are guaranteed.
@@ProjectKARMA This argument is also unfounded. Joyboy died didnt he? If the ability couldn't make the original user invincible, then Luffy cant be either. In addition, if this guy is actually watching the show, Luffy takes plenty of damage in his fight with Kaido. This take shows a lack of faith in Oda as a writer, claiming gear 5 takes the stakes out of every battle from now on. Read the manga... the stakes are NOT gone. Luffy can and very much will die even with Gear 5 if he doesnt master it. "The stakes are lower cause [MC] got stronger." Just isnt logical. Did the stakes in Dragonball lower when Goku became super saiyan? Did the stakes lower in MHA when Deku started unlocking new quirks? What about in JJK when Yuji learned to do consecutive black flash? It should be common sense that when a character acquires a new, much more powerful ability, its to compete with new and stronger opponents. Luffy barely beat Kaido. If Gear 5 isnt the perfect representation of a character then I dont know what is. Luffy almost died in East Blue about 5 times from doing dumb and corny ideas without thinking ahead. Gear 5 now allows him to do that corny shit without it severely punishing him. Which was his only combat flaw until now. Him not taking fights seriously until the climax has ALWAYS been Luffy's trait, now it just works in his favor.
This comment 💯 gear 5 is peak, and the start of the end game. I would agree that introducing it during a black beard vs luffy show down would be even more epic. But then again how would you wrap up kaido vs luffy if you don't introduce gear 5? With another gear 4 alternative? I feel like wano's conclusion would have been a disappointment if gear 5 wasn't implemented here.
Also, in regard to the it "lowers the stakes," I would totally disagree with this comment. The stakes are higher than ever in the one-piece world (if you are caught up in the manga). And the contrast between the gorosei and imu being the worst of the worst, and luffy being well... luffy makes for an awesome story. The seriousness of the world government trying to silenece people and keep history a secret, contrasted by one guy who just doesn't care and wants to be free, helps relieve the viewer/reader from just reading 200+ chapters of just serious situations. Not only does luffy bring joy to people in the onepiece world when they watch joy boy fight. But it also brings joy to the reader. I like to think by having that major contrast makes for a better story, aswell as making it more digestible. I couldn't finish attack on titan because the whole show is just serious the whole time in my opinion. And why I love onepiece so much is because they do such a good job in mixing all things together.
The thing about Gear 5 is that it plays into the story pretty well because characters like Shanks and the 5 Elders already know the truth behind the Gum Gum Fruit. It was only a matter of time before he tapped into that power, especially with all the talk about Joyboy and Nika the Sun God kinda being pointed at Luffy right now until proven otherwise. What makes Gear 5 different from the other Gears is that like yall said he isnt serious nor was he intended to be. Gear 2-4 is only unleashed when his back is against the wall and he's being dead serious, but Gear 5 i believe is more of a state of mind kind of thing (like MUI) where it can only be unleashed when he is calm and genuinely happy enjoying the fight. And since no one is ridiculously as carefree and dumb like Luffy it makes since that he would be the one to tap into that energy. Also i dont think Gear 5 is as cracked as people make it seem. I still think with enough Haki even Gear 5 can still take damage. Yes he was playing with Kaido during that 5 but: 1) They wanted to showcase Gear 5 and how powerful it is and 2) If u notice yes Kaido has haki and sure hes used it a lot but Kaido has mostly been relying on raw strength since he hasnt felt the need to tap into that level of power since Oden and the other goated old generation pirates.
Not to mention it is labeled as the most ridiculous devil fruit if im not mistaken. Gear 5 plays more into Luffy's character and the fact that hes tapping into against Kaido who isnt even the overall main villain or big boss like say Blackbeard or the 5 Elders or that weird pinhead looking mf id say this is just a hint of the kind of level his future opponents are gonna be at.
Also one last thing idk if it effects all the other Gears but remember how Gear 2 effects Luffy's health everytime he uses it on a level where its basically taking chunks of his lifespan well i wonder if all the other gears do that on an even grander scale....cuz i doubt Gear 5 is an inconsequential ability it definitely has to be taking something from him other than just him feeling tired and lookin like a deflated whoopie cushion. And as regards to the 5 Elders not recognizing the Devil Fruit it could either like Amare said have the ability to mask itself as a weaker devil fruit so they wouldnt recognize it OR simply they just didnt want to believe that Luffy had that ability all this time. Also i think Rocks did have it becuz everytime we saw him he was always smiling...now yes I know Gol D. Roger was always smiling too but hear me out. Rocks was a very powerful and notorious pirate who had not just one or two but THREE of the Emperors on his team before they departed and like Luffy now, Rocks was also acknowledged as a major threat to the World Government, even more than Roger himself at the time and it wasnt just becuz he was a pirate but the POWER he had which was so grand that they literally had to wipe him out completely from not only the physical world but from history. It required Roger AND Garp to take this fool down, and when they did Garp was acknowledged as the Hero of the Marines! That dude was on the same level as Roger, you would think he would've been given that title just by that alone, so that should tell u there is something about Rocks theyre not letting on. The difference however between Luffy and Rocks is that Rocks was repelling people away and they feared or simply didnt respect him, which was not what that power specifically was used for so one of the strongest pirates and one of the strongest if not the strongest marine had to come together to take him out. Whereas Luffy is bringing everybody together with or without the intention to do so if anything itll bring eveybody together to fight a common enemy or threat and bring joy to the world which what that power was meant for.

I'm just gonna take this one as a joke but in response to the stakes argument I'd say that one is incorrect. I think you're referring to tension. Not stakes. Those are two different things. They're related but not quite the same. Whats at stake is the physical threat within the story itself and tension is the emotion you feel from those stakes. Theres still plenty of stakes. But the tension is minimized because of G5. I'd actually argue this isn't a bad thing. It's just a whole new appeal. You don't inherently need tension to tell a good story or even to enjoy a good story. I mean, no one watches Looney Tunes hoping for some dramatic death so that they can feel some tension. Tension doesn't even factor into it because it's just not that kind of narrative. For One Piece it just means the thing to get excited about is no longer going to be wondering if the characters survive. The thing to get excited about is now is how Luffy is going to cut the tension. Because thats his new narrative purpose. For the villains to make things tense and dramatic, and for Luffy to completely undermine them in a hilarious way. It's technically the same thing he's always been doing...but funnier.
