- This week I take a look and see if Mauritius is more expensive for the cost of food than South Africa? Several items are compared and I dive in to see how affordable this island is.
All thoughts are my own and do let me know in the comments about how you feel as to whether Mauritius is expensive or not?

I'm a Mauritian now living in the UK but what I love about Mauritius is the sheer variety of things. A lot of the variety of Lindt or Cadbury chocolates that you get in Mauritius, I can't even find in the UK. Prices when I went a couple of months ago weren't actually bad for being imported, although I understand that for most people there, they are still expensive.

Thank you Lucy for all the work on this topic. I am watching your channel for a year now. Lindt in Germany, where it comes from, is 2,20-2,60,-€. Considering prices went up significantly over the last 12 months, Germans are joking that we are in close reach of Swiss prices. Considering Mauritius is an island with import fees plus high transportation costs, prices, you have shown, are okay. Oh, I forgot, butter is 2,2-2,7,-€ here. Sometimes 1,69,-€ on offer. Keep up your good work. Legalized drug alcohol is fairly cheap here due to the billions of tax revenue for the country.

Gas prices: 0,173,- per cm meter plus 14,90,-€ monthly admin fee
Diesel: 1,7-1,9 a Liter
Gasoline/ Benzin: 1,7-1,9 Liter
Electricity: 0,35 kWH plus 14,90,-€ monthly admin fee

Import fees YES -- high transportation costs NO (except for a car or lorry).
Hi , Good video thank you , I have been doing the same research lol . I have been checking out Mauritian supermarket online brochures . DV we will be there with my whole family early next year and staying at Black River . As South Africans my sons braai / bbg quite regularly . So i told them that saw Indian Buffalo meat on on the online brochures. Now we are all intrigued if it can be braaied or BBQ grilled ?? Also i know its a long shot but what are the odd's of getting some Boerewors ?

I was quite surprised to find that our grocery bill here is fairly equivalent to the SA one on a monthly basis. But as you point out, thats only possible with some adjustments in the diet. Red meat is a luxury, fish is also weirdly expensive, but chicken is good. Nutella is much cheaper than SA. Biscoff too. Nescafe is ridiculously expensive compared to SA. Nespresso about 30% more. Boerewors rolls are a luxury lol. So the only question is whether the offset from a much lower tax rate sets off the expensive cost of living.
The tax rate is certainly more favorable here, but one has to take into account many factors (car prices, houses, furniture, schooling, utility bills etc) to really understand the cost of living here. I still maintain that unless you have a good job here, Mauritius is pretty expensive. Kinda like anywhere in the world, the more you earn, the easier life will be. Thanks for the comment. 😊
Considering it's sugar plantations everywhere on the island, it's no wonder all food being imported means prices are so high. I also found the supermarket selection is geared to French tastes and could not get much of the same as the UK. Meat especially lamb was particularly expensive if could be found at all. Even fresh vegetable selection is different to the UK and little choice of cows milk. Lucky to find anything marked as organic. Clothes prices in shopping malls is 3-4x UK prices. Pharmacies in malls don't sell the useful meds which you can get outside at independent pharmacies. You won't find really useful services in the malls either like clothing alterations, watch repairs and the likes or hardware stores. Generally, I found eating out mostly affordable but supermarkets very expensive with limited choice. I am sure there is better choice in Port Louis (markets) but if you want to live in Grand Baie, Pampelmousses, Tamarin or Flic-en-Flac you may have to compromise. FYI international schools are mostly full.

Hi I’ve been watching your videos as I’m planning a trip to Mauritius in may or early June. Is still can’t decide which side of the island would be best to stay on. I love snorkelling and have found a hotel in Bel Ombre that I’m interested in booking. Do you think the sea would be quite calm in that area at that time of year or would the trade winds make it to rough and choppy for snorkelling??

Hi Dave. That’s normally the time if the year when the SE winds start to blow. I would look at the west coast rather. Somewhere like Flic en Flac. Check out Pointe D’Esny while you’re on the island as it has amazing snorkeling 👌

In California, the shopping list you have presented is about 30%-40% more expensive than Mauritius. How is health insurance in Mauritius ? I pay $649 USD a month for health insurance and they still don't cover everything and I have to pay on top of it to get some medicine. 1L of gas in CA is about $1.5 USD. Everything here got so out of control that at the current prices just from selling my house in Southern California I can buy a mansion at the beach in Mauritius and be retired for the rest of my life. I'm seriously considering it. How much are the utilities, water, power etc ? Thank you !!
Health insurance is ok, but while living here I would definitely get an international cover so that one can have proper care elsewhere if needed 👍🏻
I live in ireland and everything here is really expensive. I found it shocking that manybof the Mauritian prices are the same or actually higher!. For example, 200g butter is about 2.40, 400g butter 3.60, oats/almond/soya milk approx. 2.80-3.40 depending on brand, half a kilo cherry tomatoes i pay about 3 euros.

Hi, This is a nice video comparing one of the basic commodities of human needs. Mauritius is among the countries where food is costly compared to other places. This is because we have to import almost everything and there is no control over the price mechanism. So the distributors do a little bit of whatever they want. On the other hand, if you are living in Mauritius and working on international markets and getting in dollars etc..., you will not find it difficult to afford these products. And we must also know that the immigrants earn good money which also contributes to a significant rise in certain areas, especially in the West.

Also a lot of comments seem to forget grocery prices might be high, but the tax is very low. Compared to EU or SA where top earners are nearly at 50%
So if local costs are higher you will probably still save money overall thanks to the tax. Factor that in.
You are correct regarding tax. 20% is the highest you’ll pay. Cape Town and Mauritius are vastly different. It depends on what you want out of life. I chose safety and a low tax rate, with a great, simple life.

Your SA prices are ridiculous; here in Durban with no effort at all the prices are half those you have quoted - I'm talking supermarket! So SA probably 100% cheaper, ie half price - except vegetable's 2-300% cheaper. But Mauritius is beautiful.

Yes they vary from supermarket to supermarket and of course depending if a certain supermarket is running some special. For example the Lupark butter I bought it for R89.00 at Checkers.
