We have used wooden beads and Popsicle sticks to complete this DIY Model DNA project.
This simple DNA model is very useful for Biology Students those who want to take part in the science fair exhibition. There is very less number of ideas for biology students for projects to demonstrate in the Biology exhibition. This working model of DNA can be used to explain DNA structure during Biology Lectures by teachers.
One can upgrade this rotating DNA model to use it on science day exhibition. This DNA model is battery operated, but one can attach solar panels to it to get operated on solar energy.
To make this DNA structure model rotating we have used bicycle spoke as a central axis.

DNA MODEL shows exactly the same characteristics which our DNA shows.
1. Double helix DNA MODEL
2. ~ 10 base pairs per turn in the DNA model project
3. Central Axis of Project of DNA model
4. DNA Model shows ( 3.4 A° in real DNA) gap between the two bases.
5. A pairs with T ( two hydrogen bonds) and C pairs with G (three hydrogen bonds) in DNA Working model.
6. B type of DNA MODEL (B- DNA 3D model).
7. Right-handed turns in DNA.
9. Most importantly, showing Major and minor grooves.
10. The major groove is wider than minor in this model.
11. DNA model Project ideas are based on the Watson and Crick model of DNA.

I have used two sizes of beads. 146 smaller and 40 large beads.
Orange and Green straws are just to show hydrogen bonds between nucleic acids. It should be of one color but just to make it more colorful I have used them. Different color beads on sides represent pentose sugar and phosphate group attached to Nitrogen base. Pink is to represent pentose sugar and yellow to phosphate group.

Metal rod was of 1 feet long and diameter of beads were 10mm, 8mm and 5mm...

Yeah... It the normal speed 150rpm... But it's not that good for DNA model to use... It should be very slow while rotating... I should have tried using speed controller... May be in next DNA model I will use it...

After you put the beads on the stick did you connect them together or?
Yes, connect them together to make it more firm on model, otherwise sticks will move randomly.

That metal rod is the spoke of bicycle wheel... Kids bicycle... It is of 4mm thick...

Not necessary to measure anything... Just divide popsicle into four equal parts... Two ends will be nitrogen bases and central part will be hydrogen bonds...

We have used two sizes of beads, larger one is 10mm (1cm) in diameter and smaller one is 8mm (0.8cm) in diameter.

Wooden pieces works better than anything else... I have tried wires but didn't worked... Measurements were according to the size of DNA model strand... I have used almost more than 20 popsicle sticks, 1 cm gap between each... Accordingly used wooden pieces...
