  • Disney finally met with the City Council on Tuesday. In that meeting they made a financial promise to the city for what is assumed to be for Disneyland Forward. That promise was at least $2 billion. Doesn't seem like a lot. What does $2 billion get you anyway?

      I don’t think so either! It feels more political drive to sway Anaheim into giving them looser zoning (parking garages, hotel/DVC). Park expansion does not look like it’s at the forefront of this at all.

      It's not. See my other comments here. Realistically, the theme park additions will cost tens of billions and won't open for 15-20 years. The initial 1.9 billion is likely part of setting everything up for those additions. They can't build on the existing parking lots until the new parking garage opens, and that will probably be 5-7 years from now, IF they get the necessary approvals.

    The reason to own Hotel Way: Transportation hub. Connect the western parking lots, the main gates of DL and DCA, the eastern parking lot, and the southeastern “whatever”/3rd gate to the Anaheim convention center. Perfect place to put a peoplemover/skyway/monorail station.

    My pitch: use the Disneyland expansion side for more hotels and a DL overflow bridge (exit for events/Fantasmic). Next, expand DCA into the Simba lot.
    Hold the Toy Story lot for a few years while trying to add more land acquisitions to that. With DLR land restrictions lifted, it’s time to start buying out those homes. In theory they could add more acreage this way, and that would get you more land to work with for a 3rd park and backstage area. Sky’s really the limit as Disney can pay well over market price to add to that 70+ acres.

    1. Mickey and Friends
    2. DTD West - DH/VGC
    3. DTD East - Esplanade
    4. East Parking garage

    4:15 re: hotel way. My best guess is this road is related to transportation. Hotel way can be connected to the old DCA tram route and is still connected to the current east gate. At the very least, a good right of way for transportation options. Harbour blvd would not be a good candidate for anything (gondola or people mover) and the hotel way option for ground transport just makes sense and cost effective. Possibly a controlled intersection or underpass to connect the two roads. Don’t know about the convention way part though…

      There’s more to it, Disney wants to change zoning, they also probably want to purchase other property in the area, and it’s obvious they want more control of the streets there. A 30 year plan is to get approval from the city council and the states government to all be on Disney’s side. Career politicians are crooks and will get benefits for being on Disney’s side. Disney needs to make sure these people are in their back pockets, like Newsom who we all know what he wants to be and can benefit greatly siding with Disney. Disney already has the plans, they have shovels at the ready, but they just need the land and the 👍. It’s a waiting game, just like he said in the video, city council members change about every couple of years and so do their “opinion$.”

    My opinion, the very first thing that has to happen before any of the ground lots get developed into anything is the Eastern Gateway (and if that does include the shuttle drop off being moved, would free up some real estate that could be part of DCA (North of existing Hollywood boundary). The second thing I think they should do is a 3rd gate where Toy Story is using Avatar as a major anchor for the park, that way between the 3 parks, each would have one of the mega sci-fi franchises included. Then once the 3rd gate opens and some pressure is taken off of DL & DCA I would do full revitalizations of Tomorrowland and the remainder of Hollywood. Then I would use the expansion pads in the 3 parks on a rotating cycle. DL on year 1, DCA on year 2, 3rd gate in year 3. Also IF Universal actually is going to ditch Simpsons for Pokémon in the US parks as the rumors are suggesting, maybe Disney could do something with Simpsons in that 3rd park. But I definitely think the 3rd gate should be build before expanding DL or DCA.
    I also think that eventually they really should purchase GardenWalk to use as the connecting corridor between Toy Story and the Eastern Gateway site.

    Disney executives are braindead if the plan is to make Toy Story parking into a Disney Springs shopping district when Downtown Disney and Gardenwalk are nearby. Not to mention places like the Anaheim Packing House are just 4 miles away.
    It is a shame Disney missed their chance to buy Gardenwalk and the surrounding areas for an shopping district. I believe Disney needs save money for a third gate:

    The $2.5 billion that they are stating almost sounds like upcoming expansions within the parks. The amount of money that would be needed to expand would certainly require more for both. If I'm not mistaken OLC stated that the Fantasy Springs area is in that price range. So we could see a DCA expansion happen, but only a DCA expansion. A third gate in the Toy Story Parking lot would be nearly $10 billion if not more. In total, with everything that Disney is looking at, it's probably around $15-17 billion over two or more decades. Could push over $20 billion if land acquisition occurs.

    The draft EIA shows that the section of Clementine that Disney wants is a ~575 feet section south of Katella that extends into the entrance of Toy Story lot. Disney also wants the removal of the planned extension of Clementine between Katella and Orangewood Ave and extension of Gene Autry Way between Harbor and Haster Street. Both planned extensions are part of the Orange County Master Plan of Arterial Highways Amendment and would dissect the Toy Story lot.

    Building a third park as well as expanding the other two will make Disneyland a multi-day destination instead of being a place you fit within a day of visiting Southern California. The Toy Story lot 100% should become a third park with, perhaps, one additional new Disney hotel. The expansion on the north parking lot is 100% going to be the Frozen themed land that Asia has, since it fits perfectly (people are speculating that the layout of Frozen in Asia was designed with Disneyland in mind). Unsure what DCA will get, but I would assume it would be the Avatar land from Animal Kingdom.

    I wonder if Disney would want to run the monorail or a similar system through Hotel Way and over to the Toy Story Lot area? That would connect the main resort with the Convention Center and the Toy Story area. It could then circle down Clementine Street to the Eastern Gateway garage before heading back over to the Esplanade and then on to the West Side.

    • @orion7763

      The main issue for Disney is regulatory. If the Disneyland monorail has two stops, it is considered a theme park attraction. If it has more than two stops it is considered mass transit and is regulated completely differently. From what I understand this is why the monorail has never added another station.

    • @chrismitchell7002
      @chrismitchell7002 6 місяців тому

      I think something similar regarding hotel way. But it will not be elevated transportation, I am almost certain. Monorail is too expensive. Gondola has too many obstacles and hotel owners/residents WILL complain about sightlines into their buildings. This happens across North America for projects and could happen here as well. Hotel way is best to connect with the old DCA southern tram route. A controlled intersection or underpass could easily connect the two roads for a tram.

    • @chrismitchell7002
      @chrismitchell7002 6 місяців тому

      Also worth noting that this would be the best in terms of significant infrastructure to connect properties regardless of what is built. The psychology of transportation comes into play. Regular buses won’t cut it for many reasons.

    If they build a 3rd gate where Toy Story parking is today, it would be significantly smaller than DCA was when it opened in 2001. DCA has an almost nonexistent backstage area, most back of house activities are done over on the Disneyland side. The 3rd park, if built on the Toy Story Lot, would have to support itself and have a larger backstage area compared to DCA.
    If a 3rd park happens, it's going to happen in remaining surface parking lots next to the Disneyland Hotel and Pixar Place and Downtown Disney. Building there allows them to continue to share DL and DCA backstage facilities.

    If you think Bobby Iger is going to deliver what’s promised in the Blue Sky concept drawings intended to excite you and rouse support, you’re delusional. Disney Corp has a recent history of not delivering what’s promised (Galaxy’s Edge, Epcot’s updates and Tiana’s Adventure are examples). And let’s not forget the $1.9B to $2.5B is dispersed over 10 years. How much does that money buy in 2, 5 and 10 years?
    And for those who think some exciting new amusement park will be built as seen in the proposal, Disney’s bean counters’ focus will be on hotels and retail for immediate return on investment, not attractions.

So im personally hoping they update and restructure alittle bit. Itd be really cool if they made a cool way to enter the park via those parking areas, I wouldnt ve mad at a new type of tram. I think itll be good, I just hope they wont try to build into "fad" type situations that dont pull through box office-wise, *cough* St*rw*rs *cough* lol....but thats just me 😎

    I doubt Disney has any specific plans for their potential expansion space. City approval for re-zoning the land must come first. Then Disney must get city approval to build the new parking structure. Only once the structure is built can they start expanding. This process will take years.
    Why invest is making specific expansion plans now when consumer tastes in IP and experience will be different once construction can begin?

  • @Kyle_The_Mighty

    Some context... allegedly based on multiple places I see when I try to look it up - Epic Universe cost $1 billion. The math of "it cost this much for this much space" doesn't necessarily match up. Building one land isn't necessarily the same as doing a whole park at once.
    My prediction, and I hope I'm not being too optimistic - third gate in the Toy Story Lot, the money given is a minimum and they will spend more, and it the third gate will be open within a decade at most, probably sooner. Now the question of what's in the third gate? That I have no idea. Hopefully something unique, but we'll see

    My "worry" would be that after doing "unnecessary" things like the Splash Mountain retheme, or Haunted Mansion queue upgrade, is they may find they went way over budget for projects like that and as a result there is hesitation to spend for quality and innovation and imagination, and instead we get a lot of rehashed generic attractions that are available at any other park across the country like what the original Paradise Pier area of DCA was e.g. Goofy Sky School, Scream Tower (no longer there), Jellyfish drop, Symphony Swings, etc.

    To me, I don’t understand why the Toy Story lot would be considered as an option to build a third park, besides its size. It’s far away from the actual park with hotels and other businesses surrounding it. It makes more sense to turn it into a parking structure, eliminating the proposed parking structures, and also include building a people mover to better shuttle people back and forth along with bus service.
