I can see a bit of a Bowie/Rotten comparison, but I do think Richard Butler stands on his own. What a great song by the way....have always LOVED President gas!
Just saw them two days ago in Portland, Maine. They are older, but still spry and theatrical, rock like blazes, and Richard sounds EXACTLY the same. Wonderful.
The production work of Todd Rundgren is amazing. Pity they chose not to follow on that path with Mirror Moves (though it was overall more successful, but that don't mean a thing to me).
Last part of song, sittin on his rear on stage, doin more with his delivery and singing than most so called 'polished' professional entertainers...amazing, Robert at 65.
they played this live in washington DC at the anthem on 10.6.24. i was there, and had never heard the song before. so i looked it up. thanks for posting.
Butler claimed to have quit drinking and drugs in 83 but it's a known face he would sneak into the Mission's room (when they were opening for the Furs) and do lines.
First saw them at the Top Rank in Brighton just before Talk Talk Talk came out. Seen them a few times since then, most recently in Brighton again, supported by Lene Lovich 😎
This is one of their best songs...never looked so up-dated. Especially here in Brazil...president elections in October 2010. This song should be played on every election across the planet...perhaps some people will start to think and choose their candidates better.
Richard Butler 'Fd up the 1rst. stanza when the mike dropped, then, picked up/recalibrated and started the next line, I've been there, done that in Karaoke in the day, his recovery is pure professional and unruffled..Robert at 68.
people are always doing that; connecting everything new with an obvious choice. i know how you feel. i love bowie, yes, but he too was influenced by scott walker . check walker out if you havnt already. sometimes people lose the enjoyment of music when they see music as a winnable puzzle.
Old grey whistle test was brilliant. President Gas says no lies back in the government. It must be a comedy. Haha. The body politic is a monster with a left and right. What about an UP and DOWN? Old American sales technique, do you want the Red or the Blue? Haha. Classic.
Great vid, great track. Shame they started losing it by 'mirror moves'. Always wondered if Butler really was that fucked in these performances or just affected, know what I mean? As for the Bowie comparisons, many artists, in the UK in the early 80s/post-punk era were compared to Bowie, Roxy Music approach to music and style. Was a bit cliche'd at the time.
Billy Joe was influenced. I must have been listening to the PF the same time as him "Bang Bang goes the President Gas Man, bombs away is your punishment" I bet it's a reference to this song. I've always thought so since the first time I heard "Holiday."
Back then it was difficult for lead singers not to get compared to those guys even brilliant ones like Richard Butler. David Sylvian was also great even though it’s hard to watch him without thinking of David Bowie and Bryan Ferry.
UNBELIEVABLY GREAT sounding Live!!!! DAMN, Richard can sing and it obviously wasn't studio magic. SO glad I found this - takes me back......LOVE it!
My favourite by the Furs. What a voice!
Bowie has good tastes xD. Never knew that, Richard really does stand on his own though. To me, one of the most distinctive voices to be heard.
Bowie has nothing on Richard Butler
I can see a bit of a Bowie/Rotten comparison, but I do think Richard Butler stands on his own. What a great song by the way....have always LOVED President gas!

Forever Now is the most perfect album ,back to front I've ever heard!! Brilliant!!
The production work of Todd Rundgren is amazing. Pity they chose not to follow on that path with Mirror Moves (though it was overall more successful, but that don't mean a thing to me).
Saw them at Toads place in New Haven Ct early 90’s. Still one of the best shows iVe seen.
Last part of song, sittin on his rear on stage, doin more with his delivery and singing than most so called 'polished' professional entertainers...amazing, Robert at 65.

i've always liked the way he sings... his voice is like velvet, such great vocals!
Butler claimed to have quit drinking and drugs in 83 but it's a known face he would sneak into the Mission's room (when they were opening for the Furs) and do lines.
mic slip in the beginning = no lip syncing
Worked out ok, just picked up on next stanza, keep going...
That's The Old Grey Whistle Test. Not like TOTP.
The time machine is working, sends me back to my youth...love it there and now!!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing : ) I recorded thisoff the TV years ago but all my old videos are screwed up.
First saw them at the Top Rank in Brighton just before Talk Talk Talk came out. Seen them a few times since then, most recently in Brighton again, supported by Lene Lovich 😎
i was at that show--just revisited the sloss furnaces, what a phenomenal place

Tim Butler really stands out on this.
great clear tone bass.
he has a really lovely sneer, if i do say so myself.
How many tunes does Richard Butler say "all this mess" in his early albums, at least THREE that I know of..LOL!! Robert at 68.
people are always doing that; connecting everything new with an obvious choice. i know how you feel. i love bowie, yes, but he too was influenced by scott walker . check walker out if you havnt already. sometimes people lose the enjoyment of music when they see music as a winnable puzzle.
@xtristessax That doesnt mean that it should be covered. The cover would likely suck.
Peter Cook + Cesar Romero =
Love it, yeahhhhh!
nice one!
It's sick, the price of medicine...
Sure miss Roger Morris and Duncan Killburn.
Old grey whistle test was brilliant. President Gas says no lies back in the government. It must be a comedy. Haha. The body politic is a monster with a left and right. What about an UP and DOWN? Old American sales technique, do you want the Red or the Blue? Haha. Classic.

8 thumbs down, an otherwise amazing aproval rate

At the three minute mark it almost sounded like they were turning into Led Zeppelin.
@spidermode neither Bowie nor Rotten could write this song, more political than either
@subatomiccupcake /// But he stands on his own all the way!
More than likely at this point of his life.
Drunk days

Don't need to.
President gas,Ronald Reagan, put your kisses down! Whatever that means?
Were they playing this one in Iraq?
David Bowie should be ashamed of plagiarizing Richard Butler, lol.which came first, the chicken or the egg?
3 very sick people don't like this song - keel them!
Who left the fucking Mike loose!
Yeah, but he dealt with it well. Richard Butler was the perfect rock star!
So cooool
I think the Internet has ruined music, there's no mystique anymore.

Right!!..hear an English accent or a Sax, so everybody sounds like Bowie, your not to bright.
Is this song about politics, drugs, or both? Clever lyrics.
Uh..early 80's U.S.recession, until Reagan started to undue Jimmy Carters inflation/U.S. jobs disaster by about 84/85. Robert at 68.
@trippinflags
Do you alter your perception?
best bowie song ever!

Johnny Bowie or David Rotten!
BOTH, and a dash of Jagger equals his own uniqueness...
No..Richard Butler dweeb.
@@daveated Hear me a 2nd. time...
Back then it was difficult for lead singers not to get compared to those guys even brilliant ones like Richard Butler. David Sylvian was also great even though it’s hard to watch him without thinking of David Bowie and Bryan Ferry.

Ya, right. American fans hear a Sax and an English accent, so Richard Butler sounds like Bowie..LOL!! Robert at 68.
My theme song whenever a republican is in the white house 🐴
