  • Fourth part of the 3dfx Voodoo series. This time it's about the infamous Voodoo Banshee. I was wondering if it can outperform the famous Voodoo 2.

Interesting video. You forgot to mention the excellent 16-bit image quality of the Banshee, being the first card with 22-bit filter support which is active by default in resolutions lower than 1024x768, and has to be manually activated in 1024x768 and higher resolutions.

Yeah, you're right, I absolutely forgot about that...

Excellent video and benchmarks. I got around 10% more performance with my Banshee 100/100 mhz in Quake 2 (44 fps in 800x600 and 29.5 fps in 1024) and Unreal (32 fps in 800x600 and 22 fps in 1024), but that surely is because of the driver or board configuration (SG vs SD ram, timings, etc).

The Banshee was, compared to a single Voodoo 2, in some games slower in others faster. But it sure did have a better image quality because of it’s 22-bit filter and no 2d-3d cable. It also supported higher resolutions. Back in 1998 I would have chosen the Monster Fusion or GA-630 Banshee over a single Voodoo 2 any time. For the year 1998 it was an excellent card. I would even say that the Monster Fusion and GA-630 Banshee were overall the best single cards of 1998, better than a single Voodoo 2 or the TNT1.

wel,i m pretty impressed with the benchmarks of the riva tnt in 1024x720 resolution ,better than a voodoo banchee for sure and the riva tnt today is a lot cheaper.

@@athos5359 it depends on the game and also the card version. The fastest Banshee, the Monster Fusion and GA-630, were 15-20% faster than the standard 100/100 mhz Banshee and overall just as fast as the TNT1 and Voodoo2 but also had other advantages over those cards, like the better 16-bit image quality (22-bit filter) and better game compatibility than the TNT1.

@@3dfxvoodoocards6 wel that s mostly true, but today a voodoo banchee here cost the same as a voodoo3 2000 lol,and a GA-630 even for a lot more ,also i think those nummers in the video are incorrect philps computerlap got 38 fps in 800x600 in unreal castle demo and expandeble as high as 75 fps 800x600 running a banchee 100/115mhz.

@@athos5359 today it does not make sense to buy the Banshee because for the same money you can get a 2x faster Voodoo 3 2000. With the Banshee and Voodoo 2, which one is faster depends on the game, in some the Banshee is faster in others the Voodoo 2. With my Banshee at 100/100 mhz I got 32 fps in Unreal 800x600 and 22 fps in 1024x768, a little higher than the results in this video. I also notice that the Banshee results here are a little low, maybe around 10% lower than I got. Could be a driver issue.

I loved my VooDoo Banshee!!! I wish 3dfx was still around. I'd probably still be running some version of the VooDoo Banshee right now if they were.

Had the Banchee back in the days. I'd run games in 800x600 16bit, great performance and visuals on 17"crt. Played a lot of Half-Life and KingPin in multi-player using GameSpy - much fun! The card wasn't high-end but offered great price to performance ratio.

It bought one to try back in the day. I actually quite liked it. Nothing wrong with it back then. I use to play Half-life (and then the AG mod) using Wireplay (UK) back then. Used GameSpy quite a bit. Great times!

Compared to the non-3dfx competition the Banshee had the advantage of better picture quality and better games compatibility since at that time many older games were still relevant which would only support hardware rendering via the Glide API which something like the TNT could'nt use. Also the Unreal engine at first sucked at anything other than Glide but got patched by Epic to support other APIs better. And last but not least the Banshee has one of the best compatibility and speed to DOS games.
I got my Creative 3D Blaster Banshee AGP in December 1998 & shortly afterwards overclocked the whole system so the Banshee ran at 112/112 MHz and an overclocked AGP bus. It ran great and looked great, the Creative came with some sort of lense you could use with the correspondent software that shipped with it to calibrate your monitor and the result was astonishing. Since then I always calibrated my displays although with hardware colorimeters of course.
What was a real letdown though was that I couldn't get the cockpit view to work in Need for Speed 3 which looked fantastic on my friend's Voodoo2.

I had a Voodoo2 and a friend of mine a banshee. When we had a Lan party both cards had a good performance, never know he had a slower GPU. Maybe because he had a K6/2 cpu and I a normal K6 🤷

I don't understand why your benchmark resolutions are all over the place. Makes it real hard to compare with the TNT2 competition

Well, I wanted to compare primarily the Banshee with the Voodoo 2 and it seemed to me the 1024x768 is the most interesting resolution for the TNT.
