I love this rendition. I find most other basses in this role are too extroverted, too emotive. To me, this should be intensely introspective, almost as if Filippo were in a trance. That oboe Verdi uses is like a flicker of candlelight in the immense darkness. It doesn't hurt that Polgar looks just like the Spaniards in El Greco's paintings - large eyes, sharp features, long slender hands!
