  • idk where the oil went. Could be Aperture Labs portal technology and the oil is sitting on the deck of the Borealis in another dimension. Or it's all in the crankcase. It's gotta be somewhere.
    **EDIT - I found the oil. It's all in the primary side. About 3.5L worth (so 2.5L of engine oil). Which means I likely have a faulty crankshaft seal. So that's fun.

    Hi Matt, thanks for the channel shout out ! another great video by you! btw, you're oil level woes reminded me it was time to fire up the Buell XB9R again, it does wet sump after 6+ months, so I fire it up every 3, but I really do need to replace that check ball.

      For sure man, I legitimately wouldn't have even known it was an issue to look into if you hadn't brought it up. It's been fun to keep up on the million projects it seems you've always got going!
      I'm wondering if it just makes sense to drain the oil tank at the end of the season as opposed to storing it for 6 months. If there's no oil to leak into the sump... then there's nothing to worry about. Give her a run around the neighborhood in the late fall, drain the oil tank, change the filter, leave a note on the dash that says "Don't start, no oil!", and set aside 3L to dump in before the first ride in the spring.

      My dad texted me today that he checked his 94 sportster oil tank. It's empty as well. So I assume they all just drip into the crankcase over winter and it's done it every year for the last 30 years without issue. Kinda wild.

    There should be oil lines under the crankcase you could undo to drain it.Ask at the harley shop.Check in a manuel.

      I'm hesitant to touch those lines because they're put on with those permanent crimp clamps--not a worm gear type hose clamp. So you need to be prepared to also replace all the rubber lines at the same time because it's likely they'll get damaged in the process. I called somebody that has owned sportsters for a while and he recommended not trying to remove those unless you're ready to start replacing more things.
      Harley dealer near me I'm unlikely to get a lot of help from without actually bringing the bike in. The service desk has been friendly and helpful, but I'd need to actually spend time with a mechanic there to get the answers I'm looking for.
      The manual have some info in there. Certainly not in the oil change section though.

    If you didn't install the little shaft that actuates the accelerator pump that may be why it isnt working. Its very easy to loose when taking them apart.

      The shaft is in there--I forgot to install the little rubber boot the first time, so I had to pull it back apart. I've either got something installed incorrectly (there's only like 4 parts: the shaft, the rubber boot, the diaphragm, the spring, and a little o-ring) or I've got a blockage in the little injector/squirter post. I'll see if I can get that one figured out. Thanks GemCity.

      @matttriestodothings could be clogged old fuel, especially newer kinds with ethanol gum up.

      @@GemCityGypsy If it's not an installation issue, that's my guess. Unfortunately it's not like a jet or something where I can visibly see the orifices up to a light and/or run a guitar string/fishing line through. If it is something that's gummed up, it survived multiple rounds in an ultrasonic cleaner at 50C with Simple Green. I'd probably need an organic solvent to bust up whatever is in it. I'm not really wanting to take the whole thing apart again right away, so I'll see if I can get it running okay without it first. I want to get this whole oil thing resolved over the next week.

      @@matttriestodothings I experienced 2 separate issues on my CB900F regarding the Accel Pumps. 1) I thought the squirt nozzles would work immediately after rebuild, but it wasn't until I worked the throttle full open and snap shut quite few times (bike not running) that it started to pump. And 2) A couple of the accelerated pump nozzles were blocked, I managed to clear these with a high E guitar string and compressed air (it wasn't easy getting the guitar string in there though)

      Hah, that's not necessarily a good thing. 'Olllleee Billy Boy. Maybe the hundreds of hours of listening to his podcast is having an effect... I've never been to Massachusetts, so it's not a regional dialect.

    Have you checked the primary case oil level? All that oil may be pooled over there. If so there's something wrong w that photo...

      I have not yet. That may be a good thing to do with my evening tho.. I'll see about changing the primary and find out if anything weird is going on there. Thanks rickvia

      I think you're right, and I have a bigger issue. Engine oil got into the primary side. I'm assuming that's a crankshaft seal and that does not make me happy at all. Good advice though.

      @@matttriestodothings Yeah, I was just thinking that's the only place the oil could be. I rode a '73 for years and never saw it happen. I wouldn't go into the cases yet. I'd drain everything (trans/ primary & engine oil) and refill w correct amounts in each side. - Since it sat for so long the crankcase became "sumped" and engine oil slowly bled over to the primary. You may never see the situation again. Just ride it every so often to keep the engine oil scavenged from the crankcase as designed. Very little oil should ever be in there with the engine off - It lives in the oil tank. Good Luck.

      @@rickvia8435 thanks Rick. Funny enough just got home from driving to the Harley dealership to grab the last check spring/ball and crank seal I could find within an hour of me.
      I bet you're right that there's a good chance it's fine and the situation won't arise again or the leak is so slow it wouldn't matter. But I hate not knowing--especially because it's not me that's going to be keeping an eye on it in the future. I'm having a friend 3D print me a seal press tool and I think I'm going to try giving the shaft seal replacement a go. We'll see tho. Maybe I only end up replacing the check ball and spring.
