  • When doing a brake system flush or fluid change on any motorcycle with ABS it's important to also get all the old dirty fluid out of the ABS module. Just doing a normal brake fluid flush doesn't touch the little pockets of fluid trapped in the system. You can either do it the old fashioned way by buttoning everything back up mid-job and slamming on the brakes out on the road to actuate the system, or do it through the computer via this procedure. The special tool is nothing more than a single wire jumper that you can make any way you like. They stopped selling the tool to US consumers many years ago to try and force you to see the dealer. Jump the top two pins if the tab is at the top of the harness. If anyone wants the tool the part number is 90890-03149

      Bryan, thanks for the video. Question: I checked the Amazon link above for recommended products but didn't see a manual brake flush kit. Can you recommend one for a newb? Also, I saw the comment below about Gen 1 activation of ABS. I have a Gen II - any idea what the ABS activation might be for a 2007? Thanks!

    I just flushed/bled my front and rear Brakes after watching your informative video and now getting ready to do Clutch. What I find odd is that there are 3 different nipple sizes (2 for brakes and another for clutch) so I had to make some home grown adapters for my hand-vac but got it done. The old brake fluid had an Amber color whereas the new brake fluid is nearly clear with a slight shade of yellow. I bought the 2016 FJR1300 in 2018 but never got around to flushing the brakes/clutch so well overdue but is running like a champ. I did actuate the ABS and was planning to flush again but it's storming out so I'm going to wait for another day.

    I'm doing the ABS part right now and had to do something I didn't see you mention to get the plug out. On the right side of the plug there is a place where you insert a flat blade screwdriver and pull/push to the left to release the plug. Without doing that you can pull forever and you'll never get it out.
    First, before you remove the connector box, the two pins you jump are the two on the left side, closest to the centerline of the bike.
    Second, after you remove the connector and remove the inside piece and are looking in at the pins, look at the edge of the connector box. One side is higher than the other (IOW, comes closer to you). That is the side with the pins you connect to.
    Third, look on the back at the wires. You are connecting the sky blue wire to the black and white wire.

    Thanks Bryan! Made up my own jumper lead in a few minutes. Followed your instructions and it was good to hear/ feel the ABS cycle. I was never really sure if I was flushing the ABS pump before. Great video .

    Thanks for the great video, I found a much simpler way to join the two terminals, just slightly open up a female spade connecter and slip it on over the 2 terminals,works perfect.cost about 2 cents or free 😊

    Good info on your vid. I have a 2nd gen. Super Tenere, which mimics some things with the FJR. I have a recently had problem with ABS warning. I thought the ABS junction motor/solenoid needed to run also, to get all air expelled. I used a paper clip loop and flattened the ends to make contact to the two wires on the plug.

    I recently bought a used 2015 FJR1300ES and of course, the brakes and clutch haven't been flushed for over 3 years. Using alligator clips to jump the pins to activate the ABS as you suggested worked great. I used right at a new bottle of DOT 4 brake fluid to generously flush the brakes twice and the clutch once. My next job will be to replace the coolant. Thank you so much for all the helpful maintenance tips for this wonderful motorcycle. You now have me as a subscriber.

    Thanks, great walk through on how to do this. So I went to do mine and I came across something that was not mentioned in 'this' video. That's the linking fluid flush which is part of the right front caliper. That gets flushed separately along with the rear brake flush.
    Also, as far as making your own harness it's not mentioned if the two pins that need to be jumped are the same for the codes, you just mentioned "top" which can be ambiguous depending on how you're looking at the connector, or if its the other two pins that are adjacent to that in the same connector. I did eventually find your other video that walks through the same case and you mentioned the colors there.
    Also, just having down is not sufficient, it also has to be in gear.
    In any case thank you it's a great video and I was able to figure out the other pieces from your other videos.

      @@kseries20-24only Darian, follow the video from about 5:28. top 2 pins or top 2 pins where that clip is located that locks the plug to the harness. I can't remember if I used a jumper or the Alligator clips as suggested. The rest of the instructions were spot on. I had to go through the entire process 3 times to remove all the air...no big deal, but from what I remember....the video is 100% correct

    Hello legend, thanks a lot for everything. I love watching your videos, I saved lot's of money on my motorbike, I have FGR YAMAHA 1300 AE automatic.
    I did the brake service, this time I wasn't lucky!!
    after the service, it has yellow light, Shift ,it doesn't start, when it does, I put on the first gear, it stops, its running on the first gear always

    Hello Bryan, Love your video's. I have 2015 FJR purchased in Jan 2017 fresh out of the box. I did all my fluids last year. I think I'm having the same issue reported by others. I feel my back brake is spongy or requires pumping up. When I have gone to bleed them, I'm not getting any air out of the system. Have you run across this? Do I just need pump more fluid through to get the air out?
    I purchased a repair manual for mine, it seems that at by 2015 Yamaha made easier to trigger the ABS pump. No Jumper required just an interesting sequence to run through. I thought that was a nice touch....

    G'Day mate. Just for the record if anyone is trying this on an older FJR, mine is 2004 Gen 1. The same procedure is correct, except the test connector is aft of the battery and can be accessed by removing just the rear inner battery cover.

    Great hack and as I'm due new brake lines on my '14 great timing, thanks Bryan. Is the wire connector you have also used for another procedure on the FJR? Just wondered what the other two pigtails were for.

      It's only listed for the ABS module and if those are used for anything it's probably the dealer diagnostic computer.

      Thanks. For some reason I didn't think about looking in the service manual. The plug is next to the battery on Gen 2 (Page 4-66 in the service manual). Used the alligator clip to jump the pins and successfully activated the ABS which flushed out some more old fluid. Thanks for the videos!

      I said it several times. With the clip at the top, the top 2 pins. The manual has several pages of abs test info.

      I've done it. The connector is located below, near front right suspension tube. same connector, same wires colours. Just a jumper between Black and Blue and you are good to go.

    Was wondering if you unscrew the bleeder nuts while it pulsating(before-hand making sure that both brake fluids are top off in both reservoirs)....you'd be flushing the oil out of the ABS module and system ? Thanks ! Great video !

      No. The ABS pump pulses slightly it does not pump through.

    Nice video Bryan, it definitely helps. But I'm a little unsure about refilling the system. Okay, drain lines, actuate the system and drain lines again. Now will filling the master cylinders and bleeding automatically fill the ABS module, or is there another step that needs to be done? Thanks!

      What a difference a day makes. Finally figured it out. Bleed like normal, actuate the system, bleed like normal. It was how the ABS module was refilled 'after' the actuation was throwing me. Found a diagram of the system that made sense to me (showing the 'loop'). Thanks again!

    Its very handy that a lot of this translates to the Xt1200…many parts came from the same bin! I was wondering, is it good practice to cycle the ABS unit periodically between brake fluid renewal? There is an issue with ABS-II unit on the older BMW R1200R’s, if they are not cycle periodically the carbon bushes in the motor start to stick en you have a failing ABS unit. This can be prevented by letting the ABS motor run every now and then. (I used to own one)

      There have not been any ABS issues with the FJR and the vast majority of folks don't even cycle it during a change

    My 09 has Zero rear brakes. New master cylinder rebuild kit done to no avail. Where do I hook that device on my 09? Thanks in advanced. Todd

    My rear brake on my 2009 fjr does not work unless I pump the brake peddal. I check the oil and I bled the line, but did not solve the problem. You have any ideas ? thank you. Mine is also an abs system. I only have 9000 miles on this. It is disappointing that the bike is acting up at such a low mileage. My Honda VFR with 50000 miles has never had any issues.

      Yes but instead of operating the starter switch, you toggle the stop/run switch to enter into the ABS.

      First, a BIG Thank you for all the content you put out. You've saved me a TON of Money with my 2015 FJ-09. Im getting ready to do a break flush this weekend. Since the FZ-09 and FJ-09 are essentially same bike, Im guessing that forces me to do the "Road ABS Flush"? I really don't want to go to the dealer since I've already purchased all necessary tools and DOT-4 to DIY the Break Flush.

    You didn't flush anything. All you did was pulse the system. If you want to flush the system you needed to open the bleeders while actuating the abs pump. Thanks for the how to anyway.
