  • I HAVE ALWAYS SEEN OLDER MACK TRUCKS AS EXTREMELY HEAVY DUTY AND RELIABLE. THEY WERE REGARDED AS SOME OF THE BEST TRUCKS MADE FOR CERTAIN APPLICATIONS. MACK ENGINES, MACK TRANSMISSIONS AND MACK REAREND. WHEN MACK WAS BOUGHT BY VOLVO IN 2000, I THINK A LOT OF THE OLD SCHOOL LOYAL MACK BUYERS FELT BETRAYED. THEIR BELOVED MACK TRUCKS ARE NOW OWNED BY A FOREIGN COMPANY. IT TARNISHED THE NAME AND QUESTIONED WHAT A MACK TRUCK WOULD BECOME. I NEVER OWNED A MACK BEFORE THIS ONE BUT I HAVE LOOKED AT MANY. MY OPINION IS THIS GENERATION OF MACK FALLS INTO THE SAME CATEGORY OF MOST OTHER TRUCKS OF IT YEAR.....NOT SPECIAL. NOTHING SPECTACULAR. NOTHING THAT STANDS OUT AS "ABOVE ALL".....JUST ANOTHER MODERN TRUCK WITH COMMON PARTS FROM ALL THE MAJOR SUPPLIERS. SO SAD TO SEE ANOTHER ICONIC BRAND SOLD OUT TO BECOME JUST ANOTHER NAME WITH MEDIOCRICY AS THEIR HIGHLIGHT.

Not a bad truck J.C! 🙂👍 Our newer Mack trucks at work have a problem with eating steering boxes. They tend to lock up while you're driving with a load. Makes for a sketchy situation. The dealer told us quite a few years of them had a "silent" recall. 🔧🔩 Just something to look for. Take care

Place I worked at replaced a early 2000s international tandem with a Mack. Never did like it. It’s all in personal preference, I reckon. Cab felt super small with the wrap around dash, road terrible unless it was slap overloaded, and a oil tanker has a tighter turn radius. Always had a reappearing check engine light every few weeks. But I will say it never left us stranded and could plum pull a house down. Great vid as always jc!

Have to love a 2 wire system. Peterbilt uses a 3 wire. No way to bypass it in a pinch. Usually not the sensor that goes it's the whole tank it has a magnet that floats with the coolsnt level.

👍👌👏 Your truck nr. 81 (respectively 101) runs, sounds and shifts really good. So: Congratulations 🎉 for purchasing this big rig. I'm pretty sure that with, after the typical TLC from both of you, this vehicle could sell well and fast. Or maybe you wanna keep this too? 😁 ;-) 👅😇😘 I guess Jeff will like the bulldog.

Driven lots of 613 concrete mixers with AMi330s mp7 405 egr and mp7 scr with Eaton and Mack 8 9, 12 speeds and Allison 4500rds autos
I think they are great motors, great fuel mileage even when most of the day is spent with your foot on the floor. The scr motors burn way less def than the Cummins or Navistar. They also pull great and have a fantastic jake brake.
Going from the AmI 330 to the 405hp mp7 was like going from a Ford 300 i6 to a 5.9 Cummins in terms of power. though I think the Ami was a fantastic engine too.
I cannot remember a single mp7 having catastrophic engine failure, the N13 Navistar In the truck I drive made it 50k miles before it dropped 2 valves coming up to a stop light.
from what I've heard it is indeed a Volvo engine but with Mack tuning, Don't know if that is true or not.

Nobody really likes the macks for road tractors because they rode so hard in the past due to having all heavy spec parts on them bit for abusive jobs like dump trucks and day cab lowboy work an older mack is my first pick !!!

When you said you don’t want it or need it, I knew you were going to buy it. Back in the old days, only Mack’s with Mack engines had the gold bulldog hood ornament. If it was not a Mack engine, the bulldog was silver. I drove an old Mack many miles back in the 80’s. Not good memories. It was a worn out junker with a tag axle. I drove it from the Bay Area to Dallas in the summer with no AC. Miserable.

If you think about it. Our generation of Mack's. I'm talking 80's and up. Mack was always owned by a foreign manufacturer. Before Volvo,is was Renault. The new trucks yes have Volvo running gear, and electronics. The rear ends can still be all Mack, especially the top loader rear gears. If you look at other truck manufacturers, there all owned,or powered by outside owners. Freightliner,Western Star are under Mercedes. International is under the Volkswagen flag. The PACCAR engine in Peterbilt, and KW,that's a European design. I'm actually fine with the Volvo group ownership.

While I hear you, the fact is that fleet purchases are the race to the bottom. The cheapest truck that barely meets the specs will win and be bought. There is no money in making something of higher quality that will last longer. Most companies keep the truck only until the warranty is up and the magic Million miles is on the clock and then they dump it as quickly as possible before they have to spend one cent more on it. Any investment into something longer-lasting or better quality is futile; the fleet purchasers are not spending more money so that the second or third owners end up with a better truck.
Yes, owner-operators may think differently, and so may some vocational truck buyers, but the margin for spending cash on the truck is limited there as well. As a society, we seem happy with "buying cheap, buying twice" and the manufacturers are catering to that. I own a couple of vintage class 8 trucks and the idea that anyone would be interested in keeping this old trash in running and working order blows the heads of the average Millennial parts counter guy right up. "You need a part for a truck OLDER than 2002?????" POOF.

    • @j.c.smithprojects

i think it is not the ideal dump because of a few factors, wrong suspension, too short, too light a steer axle and too light of rear axles. not saying it couldnt be done. its just a lot of work to build a less than attractive dump. im going to do the minor repairs, remove the roof air foil, put 4 drive tires on it and 1 steer tire. then we will see if it sells. if it doesnt, i will look into creating more value.

trucking industry as a whole is tanking right now. the amount of freight to be moved is low and the number of trucks available is high. people are taking freight for the same rates as they were 10 years ago when diesel was half the cost. insurance rates are skyrocketing. most insurance companies invest your premiums into things that will make money on your money. lots of those investments are unstable and move up and down so quickly, they are not making enough to operate. so the insurance companies are raising rates to cover costs. many major corporations are closing after decades of profitable years in business. many small operations are struggling to keep busy with a much smaller margin and less freight. when you have an abundance of trucks for sale and people you are desperate to get them sold to cover their bills, values drop drastically. that is what i am seeing right now.
