This week we are continuing work on the Widebody 911 Backdate Project! We're covering how to TIG weld on a car, including how to deal with the pesky weld warp after. Man, i´m crying seeing this old school craftmanship. I´m 56 and you remind me to my old buddies, car sheetmetal aprendices and later profesionals. There are cars wich you can´t buy sheetmetal spares, a friend of mine build a front left fender of an Alfa Romeo Giulia 1965. Greetings from Barcelona
Just goes to show you you never too old to learn, good video and for the ones that tell you just MIG it 🤔 are usually the ones that can't TIG thin metal.

Looking good. How do you know when you've planished enough? In person, is it easy to see when the panel is warped and that you've reached a point where it is no longer warped? Thanks!
I had exactly that same question, understanding how things work is one thing, being able to do it it's another one...
Good question! Much like when doing bodywork, you can tell by feel with your hands. Sliding your hands over the panel will reveal even the most subtle of deviation. Also using a straight edge across the weld (or contour gauges that match the original radius) works too.

When you welded the 2nd panel I saw a hole that was missed, my other concern when you smash the weld isn't that susceptible to cracking later. So after you were done did you do the x-ray technique with a bright led behind to see if any light shown thru. I found when I mig weld and grinding while it looks good visually light pin hole can be seen. Yeah I make sure nothing can be seen and as you mentioned about the sweat causing rust why give rust a second chance at restarting.. All good I am going to try some of your technique next time. I don't have your fancy welder so it may not work, nothing ventured nothing gained, I am willing to try.
What 3d scanner tou use to scan the vehicle parts , and how and what software do use to convert scanned stl into part file.
I grew up in a timeline where "doubling down" meant retreat or abandoning the goal.
The hammer care tips are such a good call, very easy thing to miss/not think of when first starting body/metal work. 🎉

As always I love watching the work. The entertainment plus high quality easy to follow explanations of the bodywork at hand are priceless. There's a 2 day old video (one day younger than this one) that I think you guys would LOVE to watch. Metal Shaper Tom just did a video on a 13 UK Pound metal shrinker (well plus the cost of shrinker dies), and it's brilliant. I have a idea as soon as you see it, you'll want to make one of our own - out of a bolt cutter.

This is absolutely brilliant, I never would have thought about polishing a hammer like that, but it makes perfect sense. Really enjoying these videos.
What tools did you use after planishing? I saw some grinding tools and sanding but what grits do you use and to what point do you use them?
Have you ever watched Fitzees Fabrications technique of 'cut n butt'? Would save you a huge amount of time and fiddling when doing a panel like that.
He (Fitzee )still goes back and planishes his welds, though he just calls it hammer and dolly work. Anyway, I think with a long multiple curved weld like this, a cut n butt would be a bit difficult. Good idea with less complex welds tho.
