That wall is like a smaller version of the dry stone walls we have here in northern England, especially in the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and Lancashire fells. There is literally tens of thousands of miles of them, some dating back well over 500 years. Some go up and down very steep terrain. It's mind boggling. They mark of fields by owner, keep livestock contained and for maintenance purposes.

Wow--major newt action! It seems like you have been seeing those almost the whole way so far. Bear and Jake were great. Very pretty section--good on New Jersey!

That's a pretty enjoyable section. We do a big family and friends picnic at Sunrise Mountain Pavilion every year. It's a really fun time. All the kids go exploring while the grownups get the food ready. I just did an overnight at Mashipacong Shelter a few weeks ago. That groomed portion is a gated service road that ends at Dennytown Turnpike. The obelisk at high point is open sporadically and you can climb the stairs to the top. Same for Perkins Tower in Bear Mountain. I love visiting Jake. Fun fact, Jim (owner) used to have two donkeys. Both were named Jake. LOL Those buildings were originally ice houses where ice companies would deliver bulk loads of ice and locals would come pick up. Their use has evolved. 😁 Also, there are some aerial videos on UA-cam of that whole NJ/NY section in late fall when the tree canopy thins. You can really see those stone walls and how they are connected to others to create pens, borders, etc from when it was all private land. It's really amazing to see and to wonder about the work involved. Too much useless information, I know. Sorry.

150 years ago the woods you are walking through were fields the settlers/farmers took the rocks out of the fields and made fences out of them At least that was what I was told.

I've been watching this adventure from the beginning. I retired from the military a few years ago and I'm planning a thru-hike for next year. I've been following along to get some pointers lol. Cheers!

Another great video to enjoy with my morning coffee. Last few videos I've heard the same voice(s) in the background. Have you adopted or been adopted by a trail family? Curious, how often are you resupplying? My hike is 2023 and from what I've read there are places to resupply about every 4-5 days. Personally, I would like places where I don't have to catch a shuttle but curious how you've found resupplying thus far and have you done most from sites within walking distance from the trail? Are you seeing many hammock campers? Stay strong

As l understand it and I grew up on an old antebellum farm. The stones were removed from the fields and stacked in property lines. Evidence of the old clearing of land to plant crops.

It is Jake's home, hikers are permitted to stay. I think every hiker planning to stay there should take that sweet creature a small bag of carrots.

I loved Jake, he really does run the camp site. And our first bear, made me a little nervous. The trail has finally even out with little rocks to slow you down. I'm wondering, are you averaging 3 miles/hour walking on the trail? Old Man in the wheel chair.

Between 1 and 3. Depends on terrain.

I listen to you steps while hiking and I was thinking somewhere of 3 mph on flat ground. Received your reply. Old Man in the wheel chair.

Yea those walls are literally everywhere in the northeast. Some are big, while others are barely there anymore, but regardless it is fascinating to wonder about who built them. You should be seeing plenty more of them all the way through Massachusetts at a minimum, possibly even the rest of the way.

Why do people think it's okay to bother small animals, as if they were toys to be played with?

@@oldmanandtheat3093 I think it's a reference to you nudging the tiny newt (maybe off the trail so it wouldn't get trampled). Go figure.

    • @oldmanandtheat3093

The newts are cute but not too bright. They sit right in the middle of the trail. A thru-hiker can inadvertently step on them. I do what I can to get them off the trail. It's for their own protection. In another video, you will see me stand in a road so cars won't run over a snake. I then get him off the pavement.

@@oldmanandtheat3093 My apologies. It wasn't clear (to me, at least) that it was in the trail. I have seen many videos where people handle small animals for amusement, or chase them with a camera, forcing them to repeatedly move.
