Good review! FYI, I’m in Chicago, IL, where the liquor was imported according to the information on the back of the box. Here Hakushu 12 years costs $179.99 before tax.
That is what I thought I read, but it has been a while since I did any research on Japanese whisky. I can't remember where I read it, but I think I read it directly from an article from Suntory or their master blender.
@@whiskeyisajourney On a hot day Toki Japanese whisky really does make a terrific Highball cocktail! I think it may have been an article on Suntory where I learned this info as well! I hope you have an awesome day Peter! 🙂
Thanks Peter. I have only had one Japanese whisky, which is the Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky. I really enjoy this one. For me it is a pleasant change from bourbon. I find it light and delicate, but with nice notes. Cheers!
I would pay $300 but not more than that. This is a Japanese scotch I really enjoy! Terrific thoughts Peter! Wow has it ever increased in price! I hope the BBQ competition went well!! Cheers!!
Really? You would pay $300. Wow. I think that's a crazy price I figured I have not reviewed a Japanese whisky in a while so I bought it, but I don't think I would have shelled out that amount of money if I did not have a channel. Cheers!
@@whiskeyisajourney Joel and I were talking later last night after watching your video and I said, "What was I thinking?!!" He has said the same thing as you. The last time I bought a Hakushu it was about $185 and I was okay with that. I did enjoy it a lot but on reflection and teasing from Joel!! - I agreed $300 is insane and there are better Japanese whisky expressions that have far better value! Lol! Cheers Peter!! 🙂
Agreed. I paid about $150 for my bottle and I don’t think I would replace it…..beautiful stuff but I can get a Kilkerran 12 for less than $150 and have a more full flavored experience.
Excellent review Peter. I was considering getting this, and even though it’s not as expensive where I live compared to what you had to pay for it, man, I just don’t feel like it’s worth the $$. Especially considering there’s so many great (Japanese) alternatives to be had for like 1/2, 1/3th of the price… Keep up the great content 👍
Thanks. This was too expensive for what it offers. I got it for a channel review and like you mentioned there are much better bottles out there that are less expensive and IMO better tasting. Cheers!
Yes. I think the Yamazaki is better. I also think the Yoichi is better and it's a better comparison because of the peated note found in both. I have both match ups in my blind sample pool.
300 bills is a no go and only 43abv you'd think they could go cask for that kinda cash. I do like Japanese whiskey but the ones I drink are 70-90. Even my Scotland scotch are under 150.
Prepandemic I got these for $78 each. At my local Total Wine these are now at least 160 when they come in. No way Peter is right. Go for the Nikka offerings for an authentic Japanese whisky.
Lovely video. Subscribed. My only issue is that you said this is almost the same thing in comparison to the Yamazaki 12. My take is they're completely different. Could you elaborate further please? Thanks.
With the exception of the peated notes I think they are both clean and crips with vanilla and citrous. I have the Yamazaki and this in my blind sample pool. So eventually it will be put to the test.
At $80 here in SoCal, the NIKKA YOICHI is without a doubt the better deal (compared to $240 for the Hakushu 12) if looking for a moderately peated Japanese single malt. By the same logic, Nikka Miyagikyo is my choice over the prohibitively priced Suntory Yamazaki 12.
I agree. Yoichi is a very good bottle for the price and I would get it over this. I did not catch the price, but I did see the Yoichi 12 at a Total Wine this weekend while I was over there. I think is was in the Cucamonga store.
Well Japanese whisky is made in the scotch style so I would have to say yes to an extent. Hopefully, with the new guidelines set for distilleries in Japan we will get a more true Japanese style expression or at least be more transparent as to what is in the bottle.
I really like this expression. But I bought it for $35 two decades ago. $300? No way!!
I agree. No way is this bottle worth $300
"High Balls"!!! It never gets old!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I know. Especially when you have a mind of a child.
What if you're just greeting someone whose name happens to be, Balls. 'Hi, Balls.'
@@tonylastname6468 Well, that’s just unfortunate for him! 🤣🤣🤣
It’s true I had some amazing highballs in Japan they bring out the flavor in a different way it’s refreshing especially in the summer
I need to do two things. One, have a highball and two have that highball in Japan.
Good review! FYI, I’m in Chicago, IL, where the liquor was imported according to the information on the back of the box. Here Hakushu 12 years costs $179.99 before tax.
$300 hurts! I don't even think this bottle is a $175.00 bottle. It is still good, but should be a sub $100 bottle IMO. Cheers!
Tiki Japanese Whisky is definitely specially designed for the Highball cocktail!!

I think the delicate note is typical in Japanese whisky. At least for me.

Great review Peter!
Hakushu might be my favorite Japanese distillery. I get a hint of a Campbelltown funk in it. Yoichi is also great.
I liked this bottle a lot, but oh my gosh was it way too expensive. Thanks. Cheers!

I hear you. $300 is way too much. Cheers!
Looks like a Japanese flight fight in the near future?!?
Absolutely! I like the way you think!
Total Wine here in Minnesota is going for $200 a bottle, but they actually have it in stock as of July 2024.
$200 would have been a better pill to swallow so to speak.

I was just in Riverside and saw a 12 year Yoichi. Not sure of the price, but I would think it would be just as much are even more.

Have you tried 12 year Glen Fohdry single malt finished in Japanese Mizunara Oak? I think it's pretty good.
I haven't. It sounds interesting. I have had whisk(e)y finished in Mizunara before and have enjoyed it.
Here is a little extra
Thanks!
300 bucks for a 12yr old @ 43% is ridiculous
It is. This should be a sub $100 bottle IMO. Still good, but not for the price.
TOKI not Tiki!
I knew what you meant to say. Cheers!
