Don, this one almost broke me. The man knew what he was singing about. He was older here in this performance, but his wisdom was still beyond his years. An awesome song that touched me deeply. So glad I watched this reaction instead of watching the video alone. Thank you for this one.

He wrote this in his early 20s as a mail-carrier, delivering the day's worth and walking past door screens... sometimes he's see someone and wave, sometimes he wouldn't. This was his way of apologizing. This was his tale in 1971, the first time I saw him perform this in a club. It was a night of just him and his guitar, taking us all over the world.

    Thanks, Don.
A little background on this song, as told by him in a "Rolling Stone" interview. He says he was working as a paperboy when he was about 12, and one of the stops they made was at an "old folks home". He would deliver the paper to each resident's room.
"...After a while, I found out that some of the people were introducing you to their neighbors as if you were a nephew of theirs, or a grandson. They didn’t get many visitors, so they acted like you were coming to see them, not just bringing the newspaper to them. And that stuck with me."
The song was released in 1971. Quite an insightful kid he was.
Get well John, prayers for you.

@Brian Alford Thanks for posting that explanation--so beautiful, and explains how two decades of having a sentiment stewing inside him could have produced a song like that. It takes that long to figure some things out, and when in the hands of an accomplished performer and musician sometimes all the parts fall into place. They sure did for this song. Thanks again, and I hope you and your family are doing well. --Don

Thank you for being one of the only people to react to John. I truly appreciate it, and even more-so with his passing. Like many others in the comments, John Prine was a big part of the soundtrack to my younger years. My Dad's love for John was contagious, and even before I understood his genius, I knew his story telling was special. He just has this way of saying something that appears to be so simple on the surface, yet has so much depth and insight. For obvious reasons I've been listening to his music a fair amount this past week and I keep playing his song "Its a Big Old Goofy World". I think it might be one you will enjoy. Thank you for your perspectives, and rest easy, John.

@JamesK IV You’re welcome, and those who have heard even just a few of his songs have been moved by them, so your lifelong experience with his music would make it that much sadder to lose him. The fact that it was also a connection between you and your dad makes John’s passing much sadder, but the connection makes his songs that much sweeter. Welcome to the channel, and I’ll be doing more of John’s songs down the line.

This would have to be my all-time favorite John Prine song. He is such a treasure and I pray daily we won't lose him. We need him. My feelings: "You know that old trees just stronger; old rivers just grow wilder and old people just grow lonelier ...." This song made me cry back in the 70's and even more so now as I am 70, but still feel like I'm 16 and I'm still living am glad that in my area (NC) we still look right at each other and speak. We even wave at people we don't know in cars/trucks. It's natural, but we can still feel lonely, so please, friends always speak to people --- young or old when you pass them, even if it's just a smile. We all need that. Thank you, Don, for reacting to this. I'm glad it affected you like it has affected probably millions of JP fans. I sure don't want to lose his insight into everyday life and his ability to make it into music.

@Terry Kindley That's such a beautiful post and perspective--thank you for taking the time to write that. We humans are wired to pick up on even small details, such as a simple smile or wave, and when that's not there we notice it's absence. From what I've seen and experienced once or twice in my life, loneliness is one of the hardest things to live with, but also one of the easiest things to cure. A simple conversation for two minutes can go a long way for someone, including ourselves. Thanks again, Terry!

Right now, I'm going out to the pasture to cry in the mane of one of my horses and throw a few f-bombs. I hope I can let his music help me through his loss like it has helped me in my worst times since the 70's. This is going to be counted as one of my worst times. I just don't understand why (and I know I'm not supposed to, but it just hurts to lose a part of your life---and that's what he and his music was.)

@Chuck Turner It was a like a living, breathing heart for humanity was beating right in front of me the whole time I was listening to the song. That kind of sentiment will always hit me deep. Sometimes I'll look for words to identify what I'm thinking or feeling, and sometimes (like during this song) it's been taken to such an extreme that I have to find a new vocabulary to express myself. Those are moments I don't mind failing to find an appropriate expression. You're right, it doesn't happen often, but good Lord did John get me good. Thanks for the observation!

As beautiful as this song is, both musically and lyrically, the best thing about this song is the audience participation. The last verse reminds us all to take a moment to say hi to a stranger in the park, or that person sitting alone in a dinner. Or just stop and talk to a homeless person on the street. There are many ways to touch another person's life.
On a side note Don, I'm not sure if you have a child or not, but if you had a child that died... could you imagine ever saying that the reason for your child's death didn't matter anymore?
"We lost Davey in the Korean War, and I still don't know what for. Don't matter anymore."
To me, the most powerful line in this incredibly powerful song.

I've loved his work for decades now and thank you for posting; I hadn't seen this performance before. One thing regarding your comments: I've worked with and been friends with people of all ages all my life and I don't use the word "elderly". If you think about the automatic mental associations with it, then think about the word "elder", you will see why. The former has connotations of weakness, etc., but "elder" brings thoughts of strength, experience and wisdom. That said, everyone deserves to be seen (and heard) and so often these days, our elders are seen as useless, with nothing to offer us.

I've been reeling ever since I heard he was sick. Guy has beat cancer twice so he's a tough old bird. What's amazing to me is even though this is a later performance that he wrote this song in his 20s. I believe he said he got the inspiration from when he was a postman (he worked for the post office and sang at night) and since he knew and was friends with a lot of the folks on his route he'd often yell hello in there while dropping off the mail and seeing a lot of those older, shut-in people made him write this gem.

@hopsluvr I started doing the channel just over two years ago doing Nashville country, and after a few months people started requesting more traditional stuff. As I started getting into traditional (which didn't take long), I enjoyed doing reactions (songs I didn't know) rather than reviews (songs that I did know), I purposely refrained from going down the rabbit hole of artists so I could do live reactions on camera. This allowed people to see my reaction to songs they were familiar with and allow them to see if I reacted the same way they did when they first heard it. Every so often someone says something nasty to me for not knowing some things, but my reactions are honest and open. I like experiencing a song for the first time with headphones on because I catch a lot that I wouldn't otherwise pick up on. So there ya go, that's how it works with me. Welcome to the channel, BTW,

Was quite surprised that you didn't know this song............too young, I suppose! We lost a treasure when John died. I continually add more of his songs to my repertoire. KP

@Keith Payne We lost a great one when John passed away, that's for sure. As for not knowing the song, I would say that I don't know most of the songs that people request because I just turned on to traditional country about a year-and-a-half ago. I was a rock guy up until about five years ago, which is when I got into Nashville country. When I started the channel I was doing pop country reviews/reactions, but folks started requesting that I do traditional songs and artists and I started to like that much better than the pop stuff. So now I'm reacting to songs I've never heard and artists I've never heard of, although every day, with each reaction, I become familiar with a new song. I've reacted to a few of John's songs so I know what he's about, but his catalog is mostly unfamiliar to me. This works really well for me because when the camera is on and I'm doing a reaction, the folks who watch the reaction are getting a true first-timer's sense of the song, whether I understand it or not. Ha! BTW, welcome aboard the channel!

@@RockN2Country Ah, new to country. Well, I have always considered John to be sort of a Folk Singer, LOL!. But, he fits country too! It was fun to find you, Kiddo! Keep it up, I think I enjoy this "reaction" bit! ;)

"discover" him, LOL! He has been at it for over 40 years! KP
