  • Knowingly or unknowingly every leader is a role model example for the behavior in your organization. Do your behaviors match your words and values? How do you conduct yourself under pressure?
We’re exploring Harvard Professor Robert Steven Kaplan’s What to Ask the Person in the Mirror: Critical Questions for Becoming a More Effective Leader and Reaching Your Potential.
Today we look at the important role your behavior plays in the actions, attitude, conduct, and performance of your people.
Are YOU aware YOU serve this purpose in an organization?
Do you feel you can play by a different set of rules?
Do you believe it’s reasonable to ask employees to “do as I say, not as I do?”
Leadership and being a role model is a process of discovery. Are you aware of how who you hire reflects your values? If you hire performers who don’t exhibit the values of your organization, you lose the respect of the people who are living the values. Turnover in values-centered people will increase, since they see how what you preach isn’t what you practice.
How do you perform under pressure? As my personal story relates, you need to be aware of how your emotions influence your team and reflect again on what’s important to your organization.
Becoming a role model is a process of self-discovery. Watch Robert Stephen Kaplan's short video on being a role model, learn why anger leaves holes that can never be repaired, and why your behavior never lies.
