DanTheWolfman here! This was AWESOME Lock Flow Drill that seems to imprint some reactions better than we have seen! I use 6 out of 10 of these quite a bit, so the other 4 maybe this could help me find more. It is about "Finding Order in the Chaos of a real fight" IMO after all! Thank you again so much. I Respect you showing how to make things work for real. This my trigger my own stuff, damn it Lenny, I need to watch Walking Dead, it's midnight already, but you got me grabbing a pad of paper to come up with my own ideas.....

I appreciate your input on how Aikido can be modernized. I also respect how you show the strengths of combat Aikido. I get tired of people stating how Aikido can't hold up in the MMA world. While some aspects of both can help you in the real world I have found I have used more Aikido in real world applications than I ever would from MMA. I incorporate Aikido, Boxing, and a few others into what works for me. I had an instructor once tell me that one particular martial art isn't ever going to be the best. He would evaluate each individual to what would work best for that persons strengths and weakness's. I like to use what is going to get me to my objective and be able to move on with the minimalist of effort to conserve energy for what may lay ahead. What works for me may not work for you. Thank you again for your input. Stay alert, be safe, God Bless.

I have been practicing aikido for 7 years now and absolutely love watching this channel. In our dojo we discuss the rougewarriors a lot and most of us (who have woken up) have come to really respect the work you put into modernising aikido. When someone asks me what aikido is I don't search Steven seagal or more traditional senseis like gozo sheoda or Christian le tissier, (Parden the spelling) I actually show them a useful street style and point them to Lenny Sly and the Rougewarriors. Keep what your doing guys!!! From a humble dojo in the UK :)

Bra! That nikyo at 8:16 through 8:34 was brutal. Can't wait to try that at my dojo (a very traditional dojo, beautiful and nice people but the training is not as, let's say, robust as I would like). It felt like it was a mix of sankyo and nikyo because of the way you gripped the fingers. I enjoyed the wine tasting joke. It reminds me of something I say all the time: this is Aikido, not geisha or tea ceremony school. We're training in a martial art.

hey Lenny ive done aikido for 7 years and you have made plenty of good points. we may learn various techniques but it is when and how you can use them that it is the key.
Many people think aikido is crap, all because of the way it has been taught by many other organizations.
I still think that if learned properly, it can be more devastating than people might think

Yes , aikido when trained with real , everyday attacks is effective , especially when we is resisting . My school teaches almost the same way Lenny teaches . I'm just now recovering from a wrist injury from 3 man randori and I'm convinced that aikido needs to be taken in a more modern direction . Thanks Lenny , I'm learning from you too .

What you are providing the aikido community as well as the law enforcement defensive tactics is very much needed. This has been a long time in coming. I have been a police officer for the last 32 years and society as a whole has become less polite to out right violent to say the least. My son starts the police academy soon. It is your approach/training, real life, which is needed not unicorns farting rainbows to promote unrealistic expectations found in street.
The traditional aikido in the street is summed up in this quote, "Behold the field in which I grow my fucks! Lay thine eyes upon it and thou shalt see that it is barron!" Sad, but true...
    Stay safe ;-)

Great topic and video. It seems hard to even find Dojo's that do Rondori anymore let alone the how and the why's it works. Almost like they want to keep the secrets to learning the techniques faster and would reduce the time spent in frustration and years wasted. A good teachers legacy should come down to their students not just on the wall. Michael

We train this same kind of chainlocking (going from lock to lock) in my Jujitsu training. We call appications for a lock or locks in Danish. A good drill is to be attacked with random attacks when starting and from there you aim to end in a chosen application that is several lock away. Or you want to try lock all limps at least ones going from head to toes and back again while finding news ways every time. It's a good challenge with strong complexety. This teaches you several roads of locks you can apply on the entire body and if you know the way forward or back from any position. You will always find a way in or out when needed. If you want a shoulder arm lock but cant get it for free, how are you going to get the lock you want when the right situation dont presents it self? Enjoy:D.

Love this Henko Waza aspects, I really love it because you never know what’s coming or what you will be served up, this actually is a better training method than trying to exhaust every thing you can do from one attack or another, point we’ll taken! Now I will do my best to share that mindset with my students and my videos of basics as you call them Kihon Happo

Ok Sensei Lenny. As you may have seen. Im pretty taken back by your videos, actually your philosophy. Glad I found you. I mentioned before, I have been interested in Aikido for 20 + yrs. Tried it a bit, & was severely disappointed. I grew up protecting 3 younger sisters, in a rough area. Sure, I learned to fight quick, but so did the gang bangers etc. I eventually started Muay Thai & some BJJ in 2000. Stuck with it through my short Law Enforcement career, and been instructing since '13. Im really trying hard to ADD to my arsenal. Problem is. Im in Denver, & every Aikido school Ive ran across teaches the traditional, non aggressive traditional Aikido, that honestly. Cant defend against me throwing any of my MT strikes etc. I WANT to find somewhere who will open up, and show me they can. I love the Aikido style, so anyone have a recommendation where I can go in my area. Personal or group training? Thanks again.
PS: Youre in shape bro!!! No offense, but most Aikido "masters" ive seen aren't. Lol, at all.. That speaks volumes.

      @SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13  6 років тому +3

Thank you for commenting. As for you finding anyone in not just Denver but all of Colorado, best of luck. Unfortunately you won't find any aikido dojos who will be willing to teach you practical applications. It's because there aren't any. I'm a very rare breed, trust me I wish there were 100's of aikido guy's like me out there. The sad reality is there isn't tho. I wish I could help ya bro I really do.

May-Tec Warrior, I can only appreciate the environment you grew up in. We do what we can and must for family. The aikido dojos in my area pursue a traditional approach as well. I am trying to find like minded people who want to take aikido towards Lenny Sly's level. He has done us a great service by providing us with an on-line platform to view and use. I am going to try and practice with my son. Good luck and stay safe.

THE ROGUE WARRIORS - Where Warriors are FORGED Thank you Sensei. I wish the same. I am an innovator as well. Im not comparing, however I was able to blend Muay Thai with some of our P.P.C.T applications learned in academy. It basically turned into Muay Thai with some joint locks and submissions lol.. Hey, but I was thinking haha.. Well, IDK, but maybe I take Aikido at the best school I can here, mix in my Thai strikes, clinch throws, etc, and keep watching you? Again. Not sure if thats "cool" w the Aikido world, but honestly. If it works for me to save my ass or my loved ones. Fuck it. That may be what I hv to do. Mukido lol.. Thanks sir

Nearly all the real altercations I've ever had have been in hallways or tight restrictive areas with other people where there isn't space for the big aikido moves etc... I'm a aikidoka for a 2 years now i'm living in Turkey, i'm always thinking is this gonna work on the street ? if something bad happen to me am i able to doing that technic that i learn. The answer was suspicious. Then i see channel like this first i was angry, beacause what i learn must be the best, they teach in Japan same technics but no. In time i except the truth past is past, ''things need the change'' i couldn't agree more, traditional way is peacefull relaxing but not exactly work in the real world. So i think dojo's must have two lesson. 1- traditional way lessons so we can understand the technics where they came from and 2- Modernizing Aikido it's about the how we can use this technics in the street.

Bust their fingers and their nose at the same time.

Speaking the truth, keeping it real, telling it like it is. The stuff you're saying has needed to be said for a long-ass time. every technique should be based on Merit and efficacy and although I know that what you are saying is correct there is still a part of me that's crying out don't you break my heart my Aiki- Breaky Heart! Lenny you should have your own show where you put on a white belt travel to different Aikido classes and start correcting the instructor LOL!

Like your girlfriend said, ''size doesn't matter.'' lol. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Bigger and stronger does not mean better. Anatomically speaking, everyone's body has the same mechanics. A yubi dori will work on a 4' 120lb person the same as it would on a 7' 300lb person. However, the 7' 300lb guy may not be able to take flawless ukemi and hence, the harder they fall. Dan The Wolfman just posted a video sparring with a 250lb football player, and that guy hits the mat pretty hard.

This is just an awesome video Lenny! Two friends of mine called me this morning after watching it and we decided to get on the mat and do a couple of hours training following your video. And by chance (a slap while taking a breakfall on kotegaeshi) we ended up asking ourselves: what if uke strikes with a hookpunch right before or at the same time he receives the kotegaeshi? Like in your video, at 7.30 , if your uke wanted to,he could reach your chin with his left punch...i know these are just drills, but even with an attack or in a real life situation where it is easier to fall victims of our hurry/haste, chances to get hit are high... ok our opponent would end up with a broken wrist, but we might as well get knocked out by that slingshot punch on our face...how to prevent this? What is the right positioning/timing/distance to apply a safe kotegaeshi while being out of a hookpunch reach?
Thank you again and again for all the great stuff you have been posting since you got online!!!

The hit by Uke right before the kote gaeshi application is a viable concern. This video that Lenny put out may help you: ua-cam.com/video/qZCxRA48RzI/v-deo.html

Tim Smith That's cool stuff! Yeah, i remember that one!
Well I guess a good way to come up with a solution is practicing with uke who isn't just a dummy being thrown but somebody who really wants to hit you! Almost all web videos on kotegaeshi out there show ukes who are retaining their free arm (actually a whole half of their body)
My fellas and I kept drilling with uke going straight at tori to hit him as soon as tori is turning to apply kotegaeshi or while he is applying kotegaeshi and man! All of us in turn got their share of slaps! But that's fine, we train for what we're gonna find out therr in the real world and must be prepared...
We will keep on with kotegaeshi because it is a topic that deserves a lot more time and practicing...so far a good solution seems to be the use of atemi to break uke's timing and focus (as for all other techniques) or to have tori positioned in a way distant enough to have uke's arm fully extended ( to be out of punch reach) and when he applies the wrist reversal, the torsion is felt all over the forearm and elbow...
Very painful and more risky for uke's integrity, but safer for tori...
Or just...we fail in breaking uke's balance at the very beginning of our execution...
Like I said, we'll keep on drilling ;-)
But hey! This type of reasoning and debating is also part of the great contribution Lenny's videos are providing to the aikido world!
      Great and cool stuff indeed!!

Yes, and one more thing I remember about this -- I have an old Yoshinkan Aikido (Dynamic Aikido) book from the 70's that showed Gozo Shioda "beating Uke to the punch" by striking Uke with an atemi when Uke came around right before the kote gaeshi application. You seem to have found this out by your statement: "so far a good solution seems to be the use of atemi to break uke's timing and focus".

Great stuff Lenny and co. Very thought provoking. Lenny have you ever seen or heard of Jishukan. Very similar self defence philosophy. You will appreciate the thoughts of its founder
"Soke Sugita combined the research he had done with medical science, anatomy, dynamics and physiology, and created a modern original style of jujitsu designed as an attack-defence art. Soke Sugita selected the techniques that best suited the modern times and requirements for self-defence. He excluded the irrelevant and superfluous techniques of the traditional jujitsu styles he had learned (relating to fighting in armour, defence of pre-Meiji era weapons, and so on)." (www.petermortonjujitsu.org.au/sugita.htm)
Thanks again for the videos. Take care.

Another great video as always sensei I love your straight forward no bullshit approach. I would like to train with you one day when I can make it out to Chicago, but I do want to ask you If you know much about the Akikai school based here in NYC? They have been here for years (1964) and I've considered checking them out, but I just want to find out if you have any info on them since you been doing it for so long? Also I wanted to know what other styles have you studied in your life and will you make any videos talking about them?

    • @SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13

Ok I'm sure which dojo you're talking about. There's the New York Aikikai headed up by yoshitsu Yamaha sensei. That dojo is the headquarters for the united states aikido federation. Which is headed up by yamada sensei.
The other dojo is The Bond street dojo, actual name The Bond street dojo. Not sure who the chief instructor is there. Although I do believe that dojo is an affiliate dojo of ASU - aikido schools of Ueshiba. The head of that organization is mitsugi saotome sensei. Yamada came to the U.S I believe in 1975 and Saotome sensei in 1977. Both of those sensei we're direct students of aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba. That definitely says a few things right there, you'd think.... Right.
Nope!! Not I.. I could give 2 Shits about that. To me all that would matter is if either of them could teach me how to fuck someone's shit up if I'm fucked with. Nope again. So it's about what your needs are. Get the point.

And I'm so tired of going to the people/name dropping schools who make Aikido into a church worshiping service instead of learning how to use it for what it is. A Martial Art. Calling themselves Shihans, but can't even give one quarter of the demonstration you have just given in this one video!!! Forever grateful.

Hey Lenny! Great video. Clear something up for me. I thought that kaitenage was 'rotary throw'. The way you did it looks like what is known as kate katami. Can you explain the difference or is it just a different variation from the mainstream way?

    • @pandabearlp
      @pandabearlp 6 років тому +2

I believe Kaitenage translates to 'wheel throw'. but rotary is basically the same thing. I can not find Kate Katami anywhere on the internet. The closest thing that I know is Kata Katame , which means 'shoulder pin.' In which case, the way Lenny Sly Sensei portrays it, he is not pinning the shoulder. The rotary or wheel throw in traditional Aikido is projected out. Where as in TenShin Aikido, you throw straight down in front of you. The mechanics are the same in both forms/styles, but the projection of the throw is different. I hope this helps you to understand a bit better :)

Lori Powell Thank you! Your explanation helps me to understand it better. Besides, throwing down is much better than throwing out.

    • @pandabearlp
      @pandabearlp 6 років тому +1

I agree. Why throw an attacker away and create distance for another attack. Throwing down allows the connection to stay constant where you have the upper hand. :)

Hi i serriously need your advice i really want to learn aikido for SELDEFENCE but since it is clear that traditional aikido and the way they train is pretty much useless i really dont know what to do. If i go to those dojos and learn the basic aikido stuff i still have the problem to make it effective i have no one to do sparring and pressure testing with. What should i do ?

Your right with you living there the dojos wouldn't say much for me. Honestly one of 2 things....
You could go check out an mma school or krav maga if those are available to you. Or......
Pick an aikido dojo there start taking classes and train yourself with practicality in mind and supplement your training with my online classes if you'd like.

Hon Gyaku is a monstrous technique. Takaori (spelling ?) I've always heard it called Kamakubi works on 99.99% of people. I met a guy who had rubbery tendons and kamakubi did not work on him. Yubi dori did when I rolled it in on itself, but otherwise he could bend his fingers all the way back and touch the top of his hand. Hon Gyaku, on the other hand, created instant pain compliance.

I am familiar with Aikido and many of their moves. But not familiar with its vocabulary and names for terminology. Most of your videos I tend to not fallow the Akido terminology. Maybe if you could also use the translation of those terms along with the term it would help me fallow better about many things you may say.
In this video you explained those terms very well. Than you.
