I am a military policeman, in Brazil, in the city of São Paulo and black belt third dan, I have studied aikido since 1994 and have already used it in some real situations and the techniques used in normal training do not really apply when in real stress situations! I have been following the video lessons and learned a lot, trying to absorb the concepts and apply them in my trainings with my students! Thank you for sharing and sharing the precious knowledge !! Domo Arigato Sensei!

Hell yeah!!! Thank you! Ive never trained Aikido, but huge respect for it. 18 yrs of Muay Thai, boxing, Jujitsu, and a little Silat. I have said a million times to my MMA buddies. "bullshit! There's gotta be a "combat" aspect to Aikido taught somewhere", and if it isnt. Ive also stated, "look at how potentially devastating the techniques of Aikido are!".. What stops me, a striker, from distracting, or feinting, and applying these techs? Point is. Im very happy to see this, and in everyday life. This works. Furthermore, say in Law Enforcement. It gives you OPTIONS.. To control and contain (arrest), or if you must. Damage the attacker. New subscriber. Thx again sir

SIMPLY EXCELLENT, MY RESPECTS, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT "TRADITIONAL MASTERS AND STUDENTS" MUST LEARN THE EXCELLENT MEASURE BETWEEN TRADITION AND EFFECTIVENESS.

I'm just going to leave this out there for general consideration.
The "peace and harmony" the samurai were seeking was in preparation for their eminent death. It was NOT the buddhist/zen form of peace and harmony in preparation for helping humanity
The samurai where violent men seeking to find the peace within themselves to accept their chosen profession.
Was zazen a part of that process? Sure! But it was zazen as preparation for death not zazen in preparation for "helping better humanity" as practiced by buddhist monks.
I'm not sure what O Sensei meant people to take away from his AikIdo teachings because I don't think any of his students had progressed to the point where he felt they were worthy to be given that knowledge before his death.
This is also a typical problem with training under very traditional Japanese teachers. If you've done that, you understand what I mean. You might have to hang around the dojo for 5 years before you're considered worthy to told "good morning" as the sensei passes by. So.... how long would it take for them to share their personal feelings and phiolosophy with you?
Today, Aikido, like every other martial art in America, is a business. You put in the time on the mat, you pay enough in dues and poof, you're a blackbelt.
That's not the way these arts were meant to be taught but for some reason Aikido people seem to think an art developed around the military combat techniques used by the samurai was/is supposed to be some kind of partnered moving meditation used to resolve conflict.
The second problem with Aikido people is any opinions about "how it doesn't work" seem to evoke hostility but, if your Kung Fu sifu/shifu, or Karate sensei told you launching a flying kick wasn't very effective thing to do..... you wouldn't bat an eye or give it a second thought. The complaining about opinions of technique seems to be unique to Aikido.
    Just my thoughts.
Keep up the good work, Lenny.
Edited for grammar, spelling and clarification.

I have always been fascinated by Aikido, and I have seen black belts do some cool stuff, but even my untrained eye saw a lot of "falling down" for each other and "dancing." I have seen lots of combat aikido videos etc, but nothing like what you are doing. You are down to the nitty gritty and revealed what I always wished Aikido would be! Drive on!!!

@@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13 He's RIGHT-- I've watched many different videos on here- and most are CRAP- including one guy that is an " aikido Sensei" going around saying it's junk and has quit-- simply becaue he is no good- and never really understood. The "way of peace" does NOT mean the art "doesn't hurt"-- if you're defending yoruself - you're GONIG TO HURT the guy-- period!!!! IF you don't hurt them- they're going kill you!!! simple. GET REAL. From everyting I see- I would give anything to be 30 younger and could come train with you-- its' the only REAL training i've seen.. PERIOD.

    Sensei,
I greatly admire your ability and the clarity of your demonstrations, via a TenShin, straight ahead, no nonsense reality. My training began in ernest in 1971 (Aikikai), but from 1975-1982, I trained under a mutual (TenShin) acquaintance of ours in Juso, Japan.
I've been teaching, independently, since 1993, and therefore, greatly appreciate the value your film clips. But (I've got to air this) the amount of time spent talking, rather than showing, is really frustrating. I value the art of verbal brevity. Like the ink brush painter and haiku poet, expressing the most with the fewest lines is truly an admirable goal. Enough said.

I was 14 in 1974 at a course in Glasgow held by Kazuo Chiba Shihan. (RIP). I always remember him saying that in martial arts, the first blow kills! My first grading to 3rd kyu that year was done by Sensei "Slim" Coyle. His main comment was that Aikido is about fighting and that I needed to toughen up! I really enjoy your videos. It reminds me of the Aikido I learned as a boy. Gracefully rough.

Really great video Sensei Sly. I have been studying Kenpo at a local school for the last 14 years getting myself, my son and daughter trained up and have always been interested and curious about Aikido. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge. I am reasonably familiar with the principles of torque and controlling your opponent's center line you demonstrate, and of course the effects of pain. I am going to practice this technique and the "what ifs", you so graciously posted, with my son in my garage "dojo". I am excited to see and feel it be effective. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you, sir!

My sensei here asks me to go for a blackbelt. But I am not interested in getting one just for the sake of getting. Because all I am learning is always textbook guideline peace harmony. I would focus on merging aikido against grip fighting and grappling, like a black belt judo, and then think of clinching the boxer and working the aikido from off the clinch. I think pressure testing like that would be very effective

I’ve been in Shorin Ryu for many years and I came across your videos a good while back and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Our style is close quarter defense. I totally agree with so much you say regarding if it works use it. If it doesn’t then transform it. Make it work or discard it. We have some pretty brutal bunkai and also realize some of it needs some revamping due to how a real street punch grab attack etc is really going to happen. My son is about to become a police officer and he’s in the academy now. But he wants to learn from me also so I want what we do to be effective. No waisted movements. It’s all about body shifting timing and accuracy of technique. Trial and error in the dojo garage gym etc. not out there where it’s too late. So I believe you have some great effective stuff here and I’m not an Aikido guy so I can only speak from what I know. I’ve also recently come upon small circle jujitsu so I love our Okinawan katas and our bunkai but I also want to know how to be better if I need to in a street situation which I hope never happens. So PLEASE Keep it up !

This could work for so many different situations in real life. Whether it's a shove to a sucker punch, if the person's arms come at you in any way, you can deflect, smack, and circle around for the arm crank flip. People tend to underestimate how disorienting it can be when you're flipped onto the ground like this. They're wide open to a knee to the face or any number of submissions inflicted by someone in a dominant position. MMA doesn't prepare people for real fights because it's predicated on the notion of a fair 1v1 with no clothes and a ref. In real life, what you want is a fast, effective concrete sandwich with a side of fuck-you to the face. As always, loving your work, Lenny. Hope all is well and the content continues in the future.

I'm nobody and I'm going to go back to shutting up, and lurking, but if you are a newbie, enthusiastic off of Lenny's videos, and deciding to practice the techniques that work, please DO always apply the love peace and harmony aspect TOWARDS YOUR UKE.
Apparently in the past there used to be injuries in some dojos with the joint locks and shit, and the most important thing to remember about the techniques which actually work is that SOMETIMES, unskilled non-compliance can result in injury and breakage.
When practicing the real shit start off even more gently than you'd "gently" mimic a punch into a motherfucker's face, and go from there; if you're accustomed to traditional shit that can't fucking do anything even if you put your back, butt, balls, legs and dick into it, and you go to change or adapt it to one of these techniques with full force out of nowhere and surprise your uke or just drop it on him even when he knows it's coming, you'd probably be surprised how fast you could lose a friend or get a lawsuit.

Everything is great about that but one lie that some people are saying is "you dont need strenght for aikido" WRONG. Its true if its done in traditional dojo with no resisting but in real world... Of course it works ( its just pain) but if a guy is bigger than you itll be harder to aply the technique on him if you are not strong enough to get him in good position to do that technique. (of course strike like a punch or kick under the belt can also help) But the thing is that YOU NEED STRENGHT FOR ANY MARTIAL ART. (or youll get knocked after getting a single punch in your head)

Your technique is super practical, logical and effective. The only thing is that you need a partner that knows how to ukemi for real or will get hurt.

      Unfortunately probably not.
The aikido world pissed me off. Aikido people are brainwashed and stupid. They have no clue what the reality of violence is and what it takes to achieve defeating it. I still pay attention to some social media posts but that’s about it. Every blue moon I’ll comment on someone’s content. Otherwise I’m a ghost. Lol
Honestly aikido could be very dangerous and effective as long it’s in the right hands, ya know. This shit that’s being taught today is a joke. Everyone likes to bash on Seagal and I have too at times. How can you not lol. Just look at him he’s a disgrace. The repeated allegations of sexual misconduct with costars and people that work in the film industry is absolutely fucking crazy. What in the hell are you thinking Seagal how fucking stupid are you? You represent the Aikido world and he’s pretty much shitting all over it with his antics and his repulsive behavior. ALTHOUGH! His aikido when he was in his prime was down right brutal and ruthless if you were on the receiving end of it. Only if more people saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Aikido would be deadly. I’ll never say never, maybe be one day I’ll be back.
I’ll tell you tho if I were to come back. I’d blow people’s minds with what I can do and my understanding of this goes way beyond what people currently think. I’ll give you an example. I hope you train aikido because I don’t want to waste your time if you have no idea what I’m talking about.
So when you train tenkan. We’re taught to let the person (uke) grab you before you actually start to move.
That is totally WRONG. I know the Iwama guys more right before they’re grabbed. Well actually you should be moving as your being attacked. If your not that’s a timing issue. You have to move like it’s an illusion to the uke. So he doesn’t stop his attack. So that’s precise time and what aikido people call musubi (blending with the attack). You need both of those in sync with each other. If one’s weaker than the other the technique fails. Also there’s correct ki extension and hand positioning. If you’re unable to do that then your technique fails. There’s a lot of the inner workings of Tencon that is not verbally discussed. I always talked a shit ton during my classes. I can explain it to you. I can explain anything to you, but I can’t understand it for you. That’s the problem in the Aikido world. Most sensei don’t know and don’t know how to explain how 90% of these techniques actually work and how you could use them effectively on the street in a violent encounter. There’s a ton more that I could share with you and yeah it would be a great UA-cam video I would probably have about 35 or 40 more UA-cam videos that I could easily do on topics that are never discussed on. UA-cam are never discussed in the dojo. Because there’s instructors out there that are not qualified to teach this shit because they have no fucking clue what they’re teaching because they don’t understand how it works. It pisses me off when they think they can do this shit but they really can’t Lugay fix it for him. How do I know this because I did it all the time for my original Aikido instructor Kevin show to the Chicago Aiki Chi. I constantly was up there front and center with him take ukemi for him for 90% of his classes. This is what I did. And you know what half the shit he did to me didn’t work. The Aikido world needs to start taking this martial art to fucking have a lot more seriously. This is not a dance form, but that’s the way how they’re teaching it. It’s like the country two-step. They got a bunch of fucking pansies that are out there practicing this shit with his love peace and harmony. Crap throws sensei spewed. There’s no such thing as love peace and harmony look at our world today he’s been dead for 53 years and 55 years. Whatever it is it’s got nothing but worse. Sohail, sensei your Aikido hasn’t solved any problems in the real world Never have never will. I know after I left the aikikai and I hooked up with Seagal sensei senior students, Larin Asa, her all my Toca, and still currently I’m directly under Jorge Angulo sensei. When I took Kami for them, it was never faked. They made me take ukemi that’s the difference. If you’re taking ukemi for somebody, you’re faking it if they’re making you take ukemi for them that’s when you know it’s real Wrap your head around that one for a minute I’ll give you another example maybe not an example but something to think about. Aikido‘s based off of the sword is it not yes it is the hopper giddy. The eight directional cut. Also known with the use of its angles of the Happo Geri. That too can be referred to as the hasuji. Figure out what that is and it’s use in techniques and apply every technique using the Hasuji and your aikido will skyrocket to level you never thought was possible. Food for thought.
Look I just made content without video.
If I made a video on this people would shit.
Anyways thanks for your time and your support. I humbly appreciate you.
God bless and beat of luck with your journey my friend.
Look me up on Facebook and message me. Easier way of me responding to a question or what not.

Wasn't sure if you'd see this or not, pretty cool that you took the time to respond.
I got to train with you once when you did that seminar in VA Beach. Never got to talk after it was over, but wanted to say "thanks" for sharing your knowledge that day. Also wanted to say thanks to the students you brought with you. We wound up with an odd number of students, and I didn't have uke at one point. I forget who was filming, but they put down the camera and trained with me. Always did appreciate that.
Many in Aikido may not like what you had to say, but some of us were ready to listen. Best of luck with whatever you're up to these days.

@@SLYSCOMBATIVECONCEPTS13 Hey Lenny, I was going back through your videos and saw this comment. I really think you should come back. I think people are more receptive than ever to what you are going to have to say. The tides are turning and I think the collective opinion toward Aikido and similar arts is becoming more positive. Look at the TRITAC Martial Arts Channel. Some of their most popular videos are of standing locks straight out of traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu. You even see BJJ guys started to pick up on wrist locks in small doses. Of course there will be critics and they are almost always basing their opinions on NOTHING. They've never taken an Aikido class. They've made no effort to understand. They've likely never had one of the techniques applied to them. The principles are totally lost on them. What's worse is the impracticality of much of the traditional Aikido being taught. I know I searched for years for more practical applications and finally found your channel and it was a breath of fresh air. I understand your frustration. I hope you come back....not to prove the critics wrong, but because you absolutely have people that still watch your videos. I'm sure they'd love to see more. You really broke new ground by uploading these videos. I hope you continue! Thanks for the videos. I've been returning to them pretty regularly since 2017.

A really nice demonstration of Aikido in a practical application Lenny!.
Personally I'd like to see more of these types of videos where you take what most of us learn, and then turn it into a more 'applicable' process/technique for us all to take points way from (as I like both sides of this Aikido coin).
As for folk thinking you may hate Aikido, perhaps less time spent on the negatives and/or issues you have with traditional Aikido and how your feel it 'doesn't work', and more time spent on things like the stuff shown in this video will help you reduce that apparent misconception.
Please ask yourself this. If you hadn't spent those 16 years in 'traditional Aikido' to begin with, do you think you would be where you are now with your understanding and overall level of ability in the art of Aikido? As while I don't know you from a bar of soap, as we are all just the sum of our own experiences, I'd be seriously surprised if the answer was anything other than 'no', meaning it has to hold some weight with you regardless of any feeling's you have towards it.

I love your aikido and how you come across because i study Aikido as well but i have a question for you. I do have a question for you what how does it work against Kickers people who practice Tang Soo Do or Tae kwon do because i have people who train either in MMA or street who still know how to kick low or high kicke and SWEEPS

    • @kingshabazz1310
      @kingshabazz1310 4 роки тому

Best way to defend kicks is by closing the space or increasing the space. Most high kicks are telegraphed that’s why in most fights they don’t work.

    • @pausetapest.v8302
      @pausetapest.v8302 4 роки тому

That maybe true in some respects however if you have someone who has been train to get you before you get me it's impossible because when i was trained in Tang Soo do this was the mentality never kick above the waste.in the streets unless giving the opportunity and use a lot of hand and feet combination
